I wouldn't take Hughes in the 1st, and I'd take Dunlap over him in a heartbeat. I'd seriously consider him at 42/47 depending on who else is available.

I think Hughes is great off the edge.People will get scare cause he plays for Tcu.Either way we need to adress the DE situation in the first round unless they went after Peppers.

I have seen him play a lot on TV and like him. He can pass rush which is what I like.
Reading the posts here; most don't want us to draft him.

From all I've read he's a speed rushing version of Shawn Crable in terms of his build. I don't know what his OLB experience is in coverage, and there is a question on his strength at the point of attack... If Crable is a third round value, then I can't get too excited about projections having NE take this kid at #22, but it's early days yet in the research. I thought his knee comment warranted awareness for draftniks so I posted his diary, we'll see if he talks about interviewing with NE down the road.

To be quote honest, he scares me a lot as a stand up OLB.

I think he does better with his hand in the ground. There are better stand-up potential guys in the draft that I hope we take.

here is my take on hughes. if he is drafted by any of the 3-4 teams. by mid season everyone on the bord will be saying BB should have drafted him he is a amazing pass rusher. but if the pats draft him by mid season everyone will be saying he is a bust.


BB's defense is all about stoping the run on first and 2th down and on 3rd down puting as many DB's as he can on the field to cover. not a whole lot of blizting. so if he can't set the edge. and i don't think he can he will never get on the field. and he would need to cover on 3rd down as will not just rush the QB. look at AD on more then half of the 3rd downs that AD was on the field he was covering a TE or a RB not just rushing the QB.


BB is not all about sacks that why only 2 player have ever got 10+ sacks in the 10 years as HC of the pats. if u wanna play LB for BB you have to do a little bit of everything.

I live in Ft. Worth (TCU country)... Jerry Hughes is solid, very good now that I think about it. I worry that his lack of games against elite competition will hurt him in the NFL. I would love this pick in the 2nd round.

Meant to add this to my last post. I would like to see the Pats draft Sergio Kendal from Texas. His junior season with Orakpo he was more explosive because he wasn't doubled. But he's played both DE/OLB so the conversion to either would be a nice fit. My only fear is that he'll be gone by #22, if he has one of those crazy combine workouts.

We're in the same boat. Lucky for you and I though is that Graham probably goes late in the 1st round with the depth of LB talent in this draft.

Graham is good, albeit short. I doubt we take him if available.

We go for more of the UDFA types and late round "gems" who never seem to do anything.

It is looking like a pretty strong draft for DEs, at least one site has him rated very high.

Final Word: A junior college transfer from Fort Scott Community College(academics), Pierre-Paul quickly became a star at South Florida. Lining up opposite George Selvie, his freakish athleticism started to attract scouts. While he is not the most well-known defensive end in the draft, Pierre-Paul may be the best pure pass rusher. Although he only played one year at USF, Pierre-Paul quickly became known as a dominating pass rusher and will attract general managers and coaches looking for an edge rush. When scouting Pierre-Paul you must look at the athleticism and potential and look past the raw technique. He is definitely a project, but one will huge dividends.

No to Hughes in round one. If BB is targeting him, round two seems likely.

Hughes is one of the better DE/OLBs in this draft who has the quick first step and array of pass rush moves to succeed -- as an edge rusher. However, his lack of height (6-2 ?), and reported weakness vs the run are question marks for the Pats D.

Now his height doesn't scare me off as it would some posters, as TBC has similar size -- and he's a starter. But IF Hughes is a liability vs the run, then I doubt BB would consider him.

As it is with all college DEs, the ability to play in space is also an issue. As a former RB, Hughes may have enough athleticism to cover TEs and RBs -- or he may not. Either way, game film, coaches interviews, the Combine, and a private workout, will assist the Pats in their evaluation. Perhaps he's still a developing player and worth the pick. One would think Hughes' DC/DL coach will give BB the skinny on him, as he held the same coaching positions at Navy a while back -- so maybe there's a slight connection (I'm reaching -- I know ). By all reports, he's a good kid -- very coachable.

I read where Selvie's sliding to as late as round three, which would be good for the Pats if he's the target. Regardless of his slide (and I've read the reasons), I still like him and plan on keeping him on my board.

Among my prospect notes, is this quote from a good friend of Belichick - Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano:

"There's some guys in the National Football League that don't want to line up against Selvie. He is that good. He's the quickest D-Lineman that I can remember off the ball, and not just on the pass."

I've seen Hughes play twice, both times against Boise State - the last with a freshman Guard replacing the injured RT - I don't see him as a good fit for NE.

I could actually see them trading 22 back for a pick 30-35 (plus a round 2 pick in 2011 or 2010 3rd rounder). Yes, be prepared for surprise, a trade back.

I love Brandon Graham for us at 22! If that is too high I would move back and take him late first and then take the best available 3-4 DE in the high 2nd round (Odrick, Wooten, or Arthur Jones). I feel we need to come out of this draft with atleast 1 OLB and 1 DE. I even prefer to take another 3-4 OLB later in the draft like Austin Lane or Misi from Utah who we could both get rd 3-4.

The only reservation I have about Graham is can he drop into coverage. The guy is excellent vs the run, can set the edge, excellent with is hands and hes a great pass rusher. I read in another thread Graham has short arms but I will wait until the combine to address that belief. I still think this kid is Woodley 2.0 because both players had similar careers at Michigan and they have similar measureables. I even feel Graham has a better motor.

I really don't like Sapp, Kindle, and Hughes because of their fit in our scheme. I don't think they can set the edge and they aren't big enough for this defense! Pierre-Paul is a project but will still go top 20. Hardy has work ethic question marks and hes injury prone. Cunningham and Selvie are DE's who would be moving to LB. They havent shown any ability to drop into coverage and they cant even rush the passer in college.
