Mardy Gilyard: Wow

Another awesome interview! :D Right now, him and Tate seem kind of redundant on the same team, but damn, he sounds like a Patriot!

Great questions. :D Glad you had fun with this, pity you haven't got it recorded to share with us because it sounds like he was high energy chatting with you. I hope he keeps his Twitter under control.

I really like reading how he does film study with Chad Ochocinco to prepare himself. I half expected him to answer that he's better on game day, his Senior Bowl week was too different from what I've seen from him these last two seasons. If NE drafts this kid I'd love to see what he'll be like after mentoring with Chad and then spending time on the practice field and in the meeting room with Randy and Tommy.

Nice insight to know that NE not only asks about past character issues, but discusses the unique locale of Gillette Stadium and asks players if they can be comfortable living in the area.

Redundant is good, if only because he and Tate will be pushing each other to be better as receivers, route runners, returners, heck they may even fight to be the best Gunner too.

Still working on rigging up a recording setup. I really wish I would have had it... high-energy is an understatement. He just loves talking football.

I found those other interviews in the wee hours and got a taste for what you heard, I'm impressed and now worried that real scouts, as opposed to all the draftnik pundits branding him a Senior Bowl faller, will do the homework to bump him into the first. I want the redundancy for NE.

I saw this kid run amazing routes and make some amazing grabs, great hands, in some lightly viewed college games this year. Cincy was relegated to ESPNU on early Saturdays a few times, and he was fantastic in some of these games. He made acrobatic grabs and made it seem like he had velcro on his hands. His life's trajectory reminds me a lot of Caron Butler of the Washington Wizards. Homeless, getting involved with the wrong people, busted for dealing, had some early troubles in his academic career, turned things around, became a model citizen, great family man, worked hard and kept the pedal to the metal.

Competition is never a bad thing.

He has talked at length about his past problems, so I didn't want to beat a dead horse. He is surrounding himself with good people (Cliff Marshall at ignition is a great man) and his family is top-notch. They are definitely not enablers.

Definitely not. I would love to have the problem of what to do with too many good WR's.

The more I read about him the more I'm impressed, I hope we can snag him.

Mardy Gilyard Interview

Film RAT. Knows his stuff...

Easily the most fun I've ever had interviewing someone.

I think, "which type of player are you question?", is a trick one. Practice hard and play poorly or practice poorly and play well. The answer is neither!!! This team is all about preparation, his answer is an epic fail.......
See Ya Mardy!

I wouldn't mind seeing the Pats take Gilyard late in the 2nd and then grab another one of Decker, Roberts, Jeremy Williams, or Juanmorris Stewart later in the draft.

A question isn't going to wipe him off the board. A question may be the difference though between grabbing him early in the 2nd round or early in the third.

Deion Branch has a 2 cent brain, evidently, and he worked out well.

Where is Allen Iverson when you need him...

Mardy didn't say that the didn't prepare hard during the week, he does. He prepares amazingly hard. It's just that he kicks it up a notch on game day. He's a gamer.

His stock probably moved up significantly after his big Senior Bowl. Don't know if he'll be available for the Pats. I'm going to have to look at more scouting reports to make up my mind about him.

Gilyard has amazing character from what i've read and heard about him. Working three different jobs to keep himself in school before being signed to a scholarship. He will be a fantastic addition to our WR group. Not to mention the added spark on special teams.

He's come a long way - with a lot of help from his family. I am SLIGHTLY worried about his affinity with Chad Ochocinco (big bro/little bro) but I'm pretty sure that Wes, Tom, and Randy would take care of any shenanigans.

Chad's nutty self promotion aside, he's a pretty good influence for a young kid (as WRs go anyway) and I'd have to think BB would count it a plus considering how much he enjoys Chad.

Actually, sometimes an impressive all-star game or workout will just solidify a player's ranking, and not necessarily move him up into another round. I've had him ranked as my #1 WR in round two (for the Pats). I'm not expecting him to run a blazing Combine 40 so I think R-2 is where he stays. After him, I have 3 more WR options who are more difficult to project.
