Ideas for trading picks for players.

Looking at the current list of potential FA's in a bit troubling. I think the Pats are in desperate need for upgrades with the WR and TE position. But I dont see any potential FA's who seems would make a huge difference. So what are the Pats options for possibly trading for players from other teams, alla Corey Dillon and Randy Moss in years past? Anyone have any players they think may be on the block and what they could cost the Pats. DW Toys brought up a good idea with Santana Moss and Chris Cooley from Washington. I disagreed with him on the cost for the Pats to get these guys, but I think either one would certainly help out Brady and the Pats. A team like Washington is in serious rebuilding mode with a new coach and GM and may be looking to trade off older players to re-stock in the draft. Cooley may be harder to get, but I think Moss at 30 may be able to be traded for.

I think that you must look at the Pats offenseive scheme as the reason for the TE troubles. Watson is a very good TE, and he just doens't get the touches in this offense. I doubt that putting TE (X) on the Pats is going to change this fact.

Look at Dave Thomas, an outstanding college TE who was a steal in the 3rd round. Three years later the Pats trade him off for a 2011 7th rd pick, and he is about to play in his 2nd SB in 4 years. He has more than held is own in NO in fact playing as Shockeys back-up he has more cathes (35), first downs, and TDs this year than he did in all 3 years as a Patriot COMBINED. That is a "system" problem and not a "player" issue.

Check out Daniel Graham's numbers (same system) he had 28 catches this year (Watson had 29). What gets really scary is if you take away the opening game where Watson had 6 catches and 2 TDs, the other 16 games he had 23 catches and 3 TDs.

Again, ITS THE SYSTEM, and not the TEs, bringing in a "new" TE, is not going to solve this.

To be fair, that's not quite a legitimate comparison.

The 2007 season was a washout, and in 2006 he was stuck behind TWO first-round draft picks (but, like Edelman this year, was productive when given the chance).

That said I still don't know what the heck BB was thinking when he all but gave Thomas away.

Again probably not worth more than a 4th round pick even though I think he's more consistent than Santanna, and this is more because of his situational usefulness rather than his quality as a football player.

Cooley is only 27. I think you can use him like the Colts use Clark and move him around.
A couple years ago Watson was supposed to be our featured receiver. He was so inconstant we picked up a couple journeymen WR who were decent. What confidence did Brady have in Watson? Zilch. He would have more touches if he could catch. It's the tool you have to use sometimes, that determines the play style.

You'd never get Cooley for a fourth rounder but I will stress this, the FA pool is so thin you must trade to upgrade your players. I think trade is the best route and we have some chips. I know AD is a problem but even if we trade with a Salary bonus ala MLB, to the Skins (who could definitely use him but need an RB to replace Portis and some DL help to go with Haynesworth) but I do not know the NFL ruling on that.

I think Cooley and Santana could be had in the right package and two problems are solved. Maybe my package is one sided (ya think?). S. Moss did have 70 catches and a 12.9 YPC and over 900 yards so his production is still top level. In only 7 games Cooley had as many receptions (29) as Watson for the year. He is 6'3" and 250lbs. I think he can block better than most think and although Watson improved, he was not the best blocking TE and was supposed to be the seam deep threat...but what do I know. He needed to catch more.

I think it would be a great pickup if we could figure the right pieces and keep our top choices if we can.....Trade would be the best. Maroney might thrive under Shanny?

I dont buy it. You spend all that money and picks getting a Qb and then trade away one of your only receiving threats. I would love to have Olsen, but I think this is a case of a writer throwing something against the wall to see if it sticks.

I wouldnt give up to much either. Maybe a 4th or 5th this year and a conditional 2011 pick. No higher then a 3rd. Hey, if he performs then its worth it. I think he has a somewhat managable contract and he did have 149/1944/9 the last two years with Jason Campbell at the helm. I think he could improve on those numbers with Brady throwing him the ball and R. Moss on the other side of the field.

Maybe your right. Think back to all the Martz offenses, none of which featured a TE......None!

I'm on board for Marshall. Nice target for TB to throw to. Maybe NE is the perfect team for him. I recall Moss had a few "issues" people loved to harp on.

I think it's very doubtful that Josh McDaniels and the GM there trade Marshall to a team that they have to face, potentially 3 out of every 4 years. If Marshall is traded, I could see him being exiled to Tampa Bay or Seattle or Dallas (for Roy Williams).

I know that alot of people have commented on Greg Olsen, ok realistically if this were to happen I wonder what it would take. A pair of this years 2's, one of the 2's, maybe a 2 this year and 3 next. I think that Olsen is an upgrade over Watson, but BB seems to like TE's who can block. I've never seen Olsen block but who cares, he could be a nice addition until we develop a true 3rd option.

They're all prima donnas. Brady will keep him in line. BB will get the lowdown from McD on whether the guy can be handled or not. The issue is not the picks, but the money - how can we afford him and still resign our important guys and defensive replacements?

Marshall is a Cancer. People compare him to Moss - it's not even close. Moss had issues, but has never been the problem child Marshall is.

Stay well away. Let him go and play with his baby friend in Chicago.

If we want a guy for 2010 try someone like Eric Decker or Blair White. And if we want Randy's successor, use the Oakland pick next year for Baldwin or Green.
