Dungy Says Super Bowl Won’t Be Close - The Fifth Down Blog - NYTimes.com

Dungy also jumped into the debate about whether Manning or New England’s Tom Brady is a better clutch player. Dungy recalled a debate he had with his fellow N.F.L. commentator Rodney Harrison, who was Brady’s teammate.

Dungy went back to the Patriots-Colts game in which Coach Bill Belichick made the decision to go for a first down on fourth-and-2 deep in his own territory rather than punt the ball to Manning.

“Nobody in their right mind goes for it on their 28-yard line,” Dungy said. “But he knew: If I punt this ball, I don’t care if it’s two minutes, one minute, if I punt this ball, we’re going to lose the game. My best shot is to try to make a fourth-and-2 in my own end. That tells me what you need to know about Peyton.

“Rodney said he thought Peyton was the better quarterback, but with one minute left he would want Brady to have the ball. I said that I’ve been in all those situations with Peyton and I want him to have the ball. Your coach wouldn’t punt the ball to ball to Peyton, I would punt the ball to Tom Brady with one minute left. Your coach is the best coach in the world and wouldn’t punt it to him. What does that say?”
why does everyone question BB if he is a good coach without brady but no one asks what dungy wouldve won without manning ?

Re: OT: Dungy says Super Bowl won’t be close

That's funny... going for it on 4th and 2 from your own 28 could just as well be evidence that your quarterback is the best, since your confidence in him is supreme. But it's nice that a decade-long debate that's swung back and forth numerous times has now been decided by one coach's decision in a regular season game (a coach whose team blew 6 fourth quarter leads last year.)

You mean the smarmy, holier than thou, arrogant, egotistical, selectively mean spirited phoney bible thumping enabler? Because he's such a warm, fuzzy, lovely human being.

Re: OT: Dungy says Super Bowl won’t be close

I remember a playoff game a few years ago. The Colts were losing and they
had a 4th & 3 on about their 42. Dungy sent out the punting team and
Manning came to the sidelines and started went straight for Dungy.
The Colts called a timeout and out came Manning. He got the 1st down, but
the Colts still ended up losing the game (To the Charger or Steelers... can't
remember for sure).

That showed me who was really running the Colt...
It wasn't Tony Dungy !

Re: OT: Dungy says Super Bowl won’t be close

He went from Quiet Strength to Loudmouth quickly.

Now we know where all those bigmouthed Colts who kept saying, "The better team didn't win," got it from.

steelers and there was no timeout ,manning just waved back the punt team i think. Question to ask dungy, would he have gone for it on 4th and 2 from own 28 if the opposing QB was manning ?he obviosuly ripped bb then for going for it. now he is using it to justify manning's greatness.its kinda hypocritical. either praise the call or blame the call.dont do both

Re: OT: Dungy says Super Bowl won’t be close

How many threads are you guys going to start about the Colts this week?

And what did Dungy do without Manning? Hmmm. He turned around the TB Bucs, who were and now are again, one of the worst teams in the NFL. The only time that team has been any good was with Dungy and right after Dungy left, when Gruden won with his team.

Dungy also won 4 out of his last 5 VS BB and I believe was .500 all time against him.

How'd BB do in Cleveland?

Re: OT: Dungy says Super Bowl won’t be close

I personally don't buy that it had anything to do with Peyton Manning. It had everything to do with the way our defense had looked (gassed) at the end of that game and who our own QB was. Without saying it (because he never would), I'm guessing BB would have gone for it against SD, NO, AZ, GB, and HOU just to name a few in that situation last year.

Yeah, I'm sure it had nothing to do with the way Manning was carving up the Pats D in the 4th in that game.

Remember when the talk was "BB is in Peyton's head"? Remember that? Now Manning has won 5 out of 6 VS BB and clearly is inside BB's head.

Anyway you slice it, going for it deep in your own territory is insane. But he figured if he gave the ball back to Manning with that much time left Manning would drive right down like he had the previous drives. And if he made it, it was game over.

He gambled.

They lost.

But it was definitely because he didn't want Manning getting the ball again.

he turned around a horrible browns team and took them to the playoffs in 2ndyr or something after which the team announced mid next season that its moving out.
if you think dungy built the colts team then you are mistaken.its polian and manning. What did dungy do without manning with the colts.? never know.
And about starting threads about the colts, any restrictions here ?

Who gives a crap what Tony Dungy thinks! My god please please please Saints beat their asses.

well okay then why dungy said that night that he shouldve punted and now turns around that manning can make you go for it so its the right call and justifying and criticizing the call at the same time ?

You misunderstood what I said. I didn't say he didn't care if Manning got the ball again. I said that people are making out to be like Manning is the only reason he did it, whereas having watched that game, I think he'd have done it against a number of teams in that situation.

Trolls have arrived...
Tell me how many Superbowl rings BB has vs Dungy. You might not even want to start comparing these 2 coaches.

Well being that the Colts are one of the two teams in the superbowl and one of our hated rivals probably a good amount.......

Colt's fans have such simple little minds....

The Colts were 6-10 the year Dungy got there. They were on a downward slide, going from 13-3 to 10-6 to 6-10.

When he got here they turned it around.

Dungy had a winning record in TB.

BB had a losing record in Cleveland.

And no, no restrictions on starting Colts threads. I actually enjoy them being a Colts fan. All the sour grapes and whining around here is fun to read and help fill the void till the SB.

But I do find it ironic that Pats fans are complaining about the media attention Manning and the Colts are getting while right here on a Pats site the Colts seem to be one of the most popular topics.

I agree completely with that. I think BB will go down as one of the best of all-time.

To me, it always seems like a lot of Pats fans want it both ways. Brady is better than Manning because he has 3 rings, but of course, in that argument, more rings has nothing to do w/ the coaching...

Sour grapes? Man, the deluded little world of Colts trolls.

Why would Patriots fans have sour grapes with Colts fans.

3 rings in 4 Super Bowls this decade.

Re: OT: Dungy says Super Bowl won’t be close

Dungy's good at building teams but his playoff record puts him a severe notch below BB. 2006 he lucked out by facing 3 teams that had no legit passing game or that defense would have been in trouble. Still, give him and the Colts credit for being good for so long that the law of averages worked in their favor for a year. The Colts caught another break this year by not having to face SD and instead drawing a couple 9-7 teams but if they can beat the Saints much credit to them.
