We take a TE. Ugh. Jermaine Gresham. Huge, fast kid out of Oklahoma.

WalterFootball.com: 2010 NFL Mock Draft: First Round Continued

I have trouble not shoring up the defense if it goes according to this mock, leaving Brandon Graham, Jason Odrick, or Carlos Dunlap on the board. Even with Ben Watson likely gone, we need to incorporate the talent we have at that position--I still wish we hadn't given up on Dave Thomas, who was injury plagued--and I'd rather use a not-much-later round (2nd or 3rd) for it.

But if Gresham is the next Tony Gonzalez, I'm in. I have no idea.

Do any of you?

I like their second round better... Hughes, Ghee, Andre Roberts (a reach, but I like the kid)

Yeah I dont mind going BPA in a lesser need as long as we adress the rest of the needs in the second and through free agency. Id probably go Dunlap or Griffen with the pick though.

Bottom line, played at a big time program and was very productive. I've lost my lust for position players that run in the 4.3s and 4s. If there is one thing players like Welker and Brown have shown us is speed isn't everything. Getting open and short line speed can be a much better asset. I want to look at his combine as a hole and see what the Pats thought of him in their interview.

I take WalterFoootball.com [sic] with a truckful of salt. As I've said before, he's been on a Patriot-bashing binge for some time now.

Anyone who says "The Patriots take BPA" in the first round doesn't understand how the Patriots draft.

i would be dissapointed with a TE but not surprised
hes a good player but i dont think TE is a major need on a team that does not use their TE
which is amazing since BB has spent 2 1st round picks on TE's

My problem with Gresham is he can't block for crap. Give me Dray, Moeaki, even McCoy.

I'm not saying it is per se; I'm just stating that the folks who run that site are not fans of the Patriots.

BPA in a lesser need is what I said. Most would agree that Pass Rush is the biggest need for us, DE, TE, RB, OG, and WR are all lesser needs IMO. I would have no problem if the Pats went BPA at any of these positions if a first round quality pass rusher isnt on the board at 22. In other words, I would have no problem if the Pats went Odrick, Williams, Gresham, Tate, or Spiller at 22 if they were available and a pass rusher wasnt.

Fair enough. I just have a Pavlovian reaction to hearing the words Patriots and BPA in the same sentence. :D

What's wrong with Chris Baker if Watson isn't retained? There's no way I'd want us spending a first rounder on a TE. Baker is a great red zone target and a pretty good blocker. We just never use him.

the only offensive. player i could see the pats takeing in the first round is. Mike Iupati, if it's not him the pats are going defense.

we never used watson

but i agree, i wouldnt mind baker as starting TE next year

I don't like the first round pick either. If the Patriots would actually use the tight end as a receiving option on a regular basis, Gresham would be a nice pick. But considering the fact that only one tight end has caught more than 500 receiving yards under Belichick (Watson in '06), I don't want them to spend a first rounder on a tight end. Give me a late round pick that knows how to block and has underrated receiving skills.

Gresham is a fine player but come on...this doesn't address the Pats' obvious need for a stronger, more disruptive Dline and LB corps.

Sometimes you wonder what these draftniks are thinking, that is if they think at all

Drafting a first round TE doesn't do much to improve our team. Unless the offence is changed as well. And if we change our offense to use the TE, why would we do it as Watson leaves?

Another mock draft from Walterfootball.com. This time Matt McGuire failed big time:

#22 Jermaine Gresham - not a good blocker, won't see many balls in the current system
#44 Tim Tebow - raw development QB, doubt he can beat out Hoyer for #2
#47 Ricky Sapp - skinny like Shawn Crable, not very productive in college
#53 Ryan Mathews - powerfull runner with good speed, but played behind dominating o-line

One decent pick out of four, this guy has no clue...

^ Just because someone disagrees with our opinion, doesn't mean he doesn't have a clue. I have no problem with Gresham in the first round, because i think this offense has to change now Mcdaniels isn't here. We tried to do too many of the same things from 07 without the depth in our wrs, and without Mcdaniels who was a very good OC.

Bear in mind doing a mock for 32 teams and getting in even somewhat accurate is a impossible task after say the first 10 picks.

Because Ben Watson is not very good.
