Panthers may not tag Peppers
1/31/2010 5:55:58 PM

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports there is mounting evidence the Panthers will not tag defensive end Julius Peppers and he will test free agency.

The Panthers insist they've not reached a decision

Last year Carolina could not sign a good waterboy due to the $$ he made.
I believe they let him walk this year.

He is looking for ONE BIG PAYDAY before he retires.
I say pay Vince but a lot on here want us to get Peppers.
Fire away

The franchise number for Peppers would be 21 million dollars for this year, no waay they tag him.

I'm all for signing him if we can.

One big pay day? The guy just earned over 1 million dollars per game plus a mill for making the Pro Bowl

I think that was a foregone conclusion. The number, as FTW notes, would be astronomical, since he was franchised last year and the tag requires at least 120% of the prior year amount.

It all about the money. He has been treated good here in Carolina and what OTHER reason do you believe he wants to leave for?
He's from this area and if he's willing to go anywhere; that tells me a lot.

I think Peppers will be signed by a team for far less than anyone thinks. It may not be the Patriots, but I think him getting a huge deal that people think he is hoping for is not going to happen. Granted he will still be far better compensated being franchised two years in a row and getting a lesser deal after the fact than he would have gotten for a long term deal two years ago.

I don't know if the Pats will go after him, but I bet you if they don't get him there will be a lot of people complaining that the Pats didn't get him after they see the deal he signs.

As for the Panthers, they got too many needs and players to retain for them to eat another $21 million. I expect Peppers and Dansby to be UFA after the franchise deadline.

Everythings about money these days, thats why my post was a touch of the lowest form of wit.

hmmmmmmmmmm:)

I get it:)

He wants the same $$ the guy who went to the Skins got. I can't think of his name.
Heck; most people would do what's he doing. If you can get Big bucks from one team, its hard to fault him. I wish I was his agent.
If we are not going to pay Vince I would be surprised if we went after him.

I think he's tired and lazy. Don't want him for the big money it will take. Just me.

How much would Peppers be asking on the free market?

$10m/yr? $12m/yr? $15m/yr? $20m/yr?

While he is a very good DE in a 4-3, I highly doubt the Patriots will be paying this much to Peppers.

I mean, the Patriots have yet to even sign their most important players...

I'd try for the draft:

Carlos Dunlap, Ricky Sapp, Corey Wootton, Brandon Graham.

I'd give big money to Peppers over Wilfork. The NFL is all about 3rd down and Peppers is on the field on 3rd down.

21 million for one year's worth of service. That's MLB status right there.

I think New England might either pay Wilfork or Peppers. Preferably, I sign Wilfork if for any reason he's the younger of the two and arguably your best defensive player among the starters.

If you're confident that Brace will come around, maybe you allow Wilfork to sign elsewhere.

Either way, New England needs to sign an impact defensive player in free agency. Belichick went after Colvin and Thomas and should do the same again.

A lot of people are saying the Pats should pick one or the other with Wilfork or Peppers. The fact of the matter is that we need both. Not necasarily Peppers, but we need a guy that can make an immediate impact as a pass rusher. If we lose Wilfork then that creates an immediate need on the DL. Getting a proven pass rusher, but losing our best DL and probably best player on defense isnt helping the team, same with keeping our best DL but then not addressing the pass rush.

Personally I would sign Wilfork to a multi year deal around what Mike Reiss proposed yesterday, 4 years 27 million. Then I would go hard after Peppers, he fits our system perfectly and sometimes you have to spend money to better your team.

I agree with you. Sign Wilfork and get pass rushers through the draft. The last thing we need is another high priced free agent with a questionable work ethic.

We could probably sign Wilfork and Dansby for what it would cost to sign Peppers. And I personally think that Dansby would help our defense more than Peppers. No matter how good our edge rushers are, they won't be terribly effective unless we seal the middle better and stop the QB from stepping up into the pocket. Signing Wilfork and Dansby would make us rock solid up the middle. Add a couple of pass rushers in the draft to add to our veterans and we would be a much, much better defense.
