I just met a guy at the gym that played tight end and special teams for the Pats in 1972 named Al (unfortunately didn't get his last name). He went to Boston University and was not drafted. That was his only full season in the NFL. Said he played with Plunket and Vataha.

I couldn't find his name on the patriots.com alumni listings. Anyone know where I can find the roster from the 1972 season? or anywhere else I might find more info about him?

The 1972 roster is here: 1972 New England Patriots

I didn't see an Al on there and it doesn't ring any bells right now on who it could have been.

Greetings,
Doubt this helps, but closest thing I could find on your criteria. Reggie Rucker NFL & AFL Football Statistics | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Hmmm... interesting.

Thanks for all the help.

He was a really nice guy and wasn't boasting. I had to ask him all these questions as opposed to him just talking about it so it didn't seem like he would just make up a story but who knows.

Maybe I'll try to get his last name the next time I see him.

Wonder if the guy isn't yanking your chain.

A listing of every BU Terrier comes up empty on players named Al.

The only Al that ever played TE for the Patriots was Al Chandler, and your description doesn't fit the bill.

Though I suppose if he were strictly on the Practice Squad, his name might be obscured from the history books.

This is what I was thinking, or he may have come in later in the season/not played a full season, which might make his name absent from the roster.

He could be telling the truth. My buddies father in-law played college ball at BC in the late 60s and was was a non-roster invite to Pats camp. He said he was cut after a few weeks. I've also tried looking him up but since he never played in any games its impossible to validate.

But like the guy you ran into, I believe him completely. he showed me his old practice uni so I believe him.

They went 3 and 11 that year. I'd give you a fake name too. :D

NOt sure they had Practice Squads in those days..in the formal sense...BUT he might have been at camp..where there were many many players..

Sounds bogus. Did he try to touch you there? *points to doll*

I tried everything on Google and no luck. I guess if you really want to know that badly, you can try calling up the Athletic department of Boston University and see if they can fax you the rosters of the BU football team from 1968-1971 or something like that. Can't find any of that online. Some player named Floyd Priester is the only one I can link to the 1971 team, as he was drafted by the Broncos.

I had a friend named Robert Anderson. For some reason, he was called "Al". I also had a buddy of mine in elementary school named Tom Fiske whom we also referred to as "Al" for some unknown reason (a nickname that stuck since kindergarten). Point being, "Al" may not help you find out who exactly he is. He may very well be that Reggie guy.

lol Reggie Rucker? I don't think so. He had a long career as an NFL wide receiver. He's no cup of coffee TE and special teamer.

And i would have remembered one of the most well known NFL receivers if he had been called Al instead of his actual alliterate name.

Sorry for the diversion:

1972 ... the infamous Junior Ah you ... drafted in the 17th round by the Patriots.

Went to the CFL instead because he wanted to remain a DE.
Patriots wanted him to be a linebacker.

The original Junior. ;)

Was Paul Simon a friend of yours?
