I knew this should have been a flag.

Reversal would've put Vikes in red zone
ESPN.com news services

It was the third-quarter hit during the NFC Championship Game that injured Brett Favre, a low blow the NFL is now acknowledging should have been called a penalty, reversing a subsequent interception.

"It's the type of hit that we don't want," NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira said, "... because clearly we're trying to protect the knees and we need to focus on this to make sure we don't miss [them]."

Appearing on the NFL Network and NFL.com this week, Pereira said the right call had not been made during the New Orleans Saints' 31-28 overtime victory Sunday.

With the score tied 21-21, Favre took a hit from Saints defensive end Bobby McCray. The quarterback's left ankle was injured during the play, and he got it treated on the sideline and remained in the game.

"Pretty much a direct shot into the back of [Favre's] legs," Pereira said of the hit.

The Vikings would have had a first down at the Saints' 19-yard line.

Instead, linebacker Jonathan Vilma's interception put the Saints at their own 31-yard line, though they failed to score on the resulting series.

Re: Refs screwed the Vikings

Lots of bad calls went both ways. This was just one of them and it happened to hurt the Vikings. Don't see the big deal here

While it was surprising that St. Brett the Gunslinger didn't get that call, I thought that the Vikings screwed the Vikings by turning the ball over time after time after time. But maybe it was just me.

Re: Refs screwed the Vikings

every single play has something that can be called a flag.

If the refs dont see it, its not a flag.

If the refs didnt see that, we need some new refs.

Turnovers didn't help either..

oooooooooh, I thought the Vikings were playing Hot Potato.

Re: Refs screwed the Vikings

Hey, don't kill the messenger. The fact is that the original poster is correct that the refs blew a critical call in the game.

Sure, the Vikings killed themselves by fumbling the ball all over the place, but that does not make this bad non-call null and void.

Re: Refs screwed the Vikings

That call and the PI that put the Saints in FG range were pretty bad.

The constant turnovers made me feel less bad about the whole situation though.

That's indisputable, but the larger point is that the Vikes played hard (especially on D) & well enough to overcome those turnovers, all other things being equal.

I thought the refs blew that game, and basically took over & decided the outcome, as refs do from time to time. I don't blame them so much for missing a call, as I do for inventing the PI at the end to give the Saints the game....

Four plays before the missed RTP, there was a laughably bad RTP called on Hargrove (he was flagged for "driving Favre into the ground," when really it was just a normal tackle and Favre ended up on his back because he left his feet on the throw).

The play where Favre got injured was a makeup non-call, and certainly not the reason the Vikings lost. The calls that went the Saints' way in OT were far worse than that one.

The refs will definitely have a hand in the outcome of the Super Bowl.

this forums double standards are sickening.

If Brady takes that hit and we lose a playoff game you all would have been screaming for heads to roll and pointed out to anyone who would listen that Pats actually won the game we just got screwed.

You all remind me of Don Shula the way you ***** about Favre. So he beat the Pats in the superbowl, yeah it sucked but it was what, 13 years ago? Not to mention we were treated to 3 more victories not long after. Get over it

Also he didn't run to the media to talk about his injuries. You all know but refuse to admit the shots he was taking were brutal and it's a testement to his toughess and competetive drive that he was willing to get up after some of them

I only saw some of the 4th and OT so as far as penalties go I really didn't see them (was working), it sucks when penalties affect the outcome of games.

with the way the refs have been calling games in all sports recently, this is a given. i just hope the calls fall the saints way, though, i must admit, i don't have much faith.

(pun intended)
