I like how Gregg Williams thinks

How dare Gregg Williams suggest the idea of hitting and rattling Manning and being competitive during the game.

What's all the hub bub about? I've heard a lot of stupid things come out of coaches' mouths in my time. I don't really think this qualifies. It seems what Williams says here is being taken out of context (that never happens, right?).

My interpretation, like some others here, is that NO's plan is to hit Manning early and often and try to get him out of his comfort zone. Honestly, if they hit Manning any where near as often as they hit Favre last week, this game may not even be close.

That being said, I doubt very much that Manning will get hit with any regularity. But I for one won't be shedding any tears if Manning gets the snot beat out of him in this one.

Like everything else involving the NFL, follow the TV ratings:

Suppose Manning gets nailed (legally or otherwise) during the first series or two and leaves the game. By the time Curtis Painter stops hyperventilating, the Saints are up 28-0, and that sound you hear across America is the tens of millions of TV sets being turned off or switched to another channel.

Either directly or indirectly, the League is going to let the officials and the teams know that will not be allowed to happen.

The ONLY way they have a shot at winning the game is to hit Manning. Not cheap shots but get to him and rattle him like EVERY TEAM in the league has been doing to Brady for the last 3-seasons. If they can't get to him it's gonna be over early.

I'm taking the Colts giving 5.5 points. I may even play the money line too.

I'm gonna defend Gregg Williams in saying that I've heard the interview once and these clips in question 3 times. This is a PERFECT example of when transcribing someone's quotes meant for radio or TV DOES NOT equate to print.

The part about knocking Manning out wasn't Williams saying we're gonna take cheap shot after cheap shot at Manning. The question was posed..."what do you tell your guys (defensively) considering Manning's LIKELY going to get some protection and calls from the officials?"

Williams went onto to the don't tell em anything.....

It reads ALOT worse than it sounds....and...because it was Manning as the QB in question....well....creat the (bleep) stir.

Of course every retired defensive player who now works in the media will tell you their goal every week they went against a good QB was to knock him out of the game (which isn't even what Williams said) but why let that get in the way of a Mike Florio invented I need to draw hits to my site keep NBC happy created controversy.

Remember last week when the Jets hit Manning on their first 2 possessions? Indy made an adjustment and I don't remember Manning getting hit again!

I totally agree with William's, this is not women's soccer. The job of the defense is to stop the colts, and Manning is the Colts. Our Saints defense is not built to stop the run, it is built to hit and stop QB's with a very good secondary that can take advantage of their mistakes.

The DL and LB's for the saints are fast, and they need to be in beast mode to hit Manning at every opportunity. What GW means by his statement is that you can not stop it once it is started, you go for the QB's head and if you get a penalty you only hope it threw him off his game.

If peyton doesn't like the brutality of football he should retire or get a better OL, same goes for brees.

How the Saints defense plays is brutal and unforgiving. We do not poses the talent that other teams enjoy and so this is our scheme. We come with everything or we lose. And if anyone thinks what GW said was wrong, it is mild compared to what LB,DT,DL, and DC say in the locker room. We are not playing dirty we play rough.

If the way we play defense appalls the Cardinal, vikings, colts sensibilities then to bad. We are not on the field to play.. we are on the field to win.

so the quickest way to make us stop is give up, that what GW is shooting for.

I am by no means wishing serious injury on Manning, but I have to say that I like Williams' mentality. Beat the hell out of the opposing quarterback. And, given the way the Saints have dealt with opposing quarterbacks this posteason, I would be inclined to take him at his word.

Peyton Manning's combined last 2 games vs Gregg Williams high pressure 4-3 defense

54/69 (78%)
708 Yards
7 TDs / 0 INTs

your talking about the
2008 Jags vs Colts 23-21, 325 yds, 211 passing
2008 Jags vs Colts 24-31, 396 yds, 364 passing

Thats fine if we can hit him and keep them to 21-28 pts, we might win. Hit the man :)

He didn't actually say they were trying to hurt him

But after watching them viciously attack Favre and Warner I can't come to any conclusion other than the Saints are the dirtiest team in football

I feel disgusted to root for them

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams recently told a Nashville radio station that the Saints plan to rattle Colts quarterback Peyton Manning by hitting him whenever they can, and that the goal is to knock him out of the game.

"We'll gladly trade a penalty or two if it means that we get to see Curtis Painter instead of Peyton Manning."

So who is taking this out of context, and who isn't?

How dumb of Greg Williams to be saying this.

The refs are going to be looking for this now.

Gregg Williams. thinks he will knock payton out of the game he has not missed a game in 12 years. and only gets sacked about 1 time a game

i think it was super bowl 38. when everone said the panters are going to get to brady. they had 0 sacks and brady throw for over 350 yerds. i think manning will have a big game. and if brees dose not throw for over 400 yerds i think the saints will get blown out.

Very true. It's not like refs don't read the news.

The NFL made a statement this morning that one of the hits on Favre last week should have been called (and wasn't), as well.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Saints broke the SB record for penalty yards...

Of course not, you're a colts fan.

While I don't mind the intention behind the quotes they are most definitely best left unsaid.

I like the idea! Really what team doesn't try to knock the crap out of the QB? This isn't flag football! I can't wait to see the "Manning Whine" face again. And Polian having a fit because of it. Ahh.... good times.:D

I don't like the way he thinks - Minnesota had 475 total yards. If Farve doesn't make a ridiculous "intercept me" pass half way across the field, Greg Williams would be home watching the game with a sack of suds, a crock of chili cheese dip and a big bag of fritos.
