Some early notes from Scout's Inc. on today's North team Senior Bowl practice:

- "Penn State DT Jared Odrick is showing quickness and power in the team period and disrupting the offense." Also "Penn State DT Jared Odrick looks better than he did early in the week. He looked quick during bag work and is showing a quick first step and getting penetration in 1-on-1 drills."

- "Clemson WR Jacoby Ford is finding seams in zone coverage and he beat Boise State CB Kyle Wilson over the top in 1-on-1s. Ford's big-play ability is finally showing up but he dropped another pass and hands continue to be an issue."

- "Arkansas State DL Alex Carrington showed his explosivness when running a twist, absolutley train-wrecking fellow DL Tyson Alualu to the ground. Impressive for a 280-pounder." This kid sounds like he could really be something.

- "Cincinnati WR Mardy Gilyard got off the line better than any other wideout duing 1-on-1 drills against press coverage. He beat both Ohio State S Kurt Coleman and Virginia CB Chris Cook cleanly." But also: "We're looking for a little more consistency from Cincinnati WR Mardy Gilyard today. He has shown good quickness during the week but he dropped too many balls on Day 2 and has to clean that up."

I have had my eye on this kid since early in the year when he gave alabama fits. He may be 284 pounds, but he is really athletic and unlike Dunlap, he never takes a play off. This is a kid I could see BB taking and moving to OLB. Looks to have shorter arms than I prefer, but from the OLB spot, that is not that big a deal.

BB takes 10 pounds off the kid and give him a year to year the OLB spot. He plays the run well. I saw him set a hard edge against Alabama and he can rush the passer. He would need work on coverage and playing in space, but this guy looks to have the ability to do that.

I haven't had a chance to see him yet this week. He sounds like he has the potential to be something special. But do you really think he has the Dunlap-like athleticism to play strongside 3-4 OLB at 270 lbs? Or is he better off bulking up to 300 with his 6'5" frame and possibly being a stud 3-4 DE in a year or two?

BTW, Alualu is very strong. Earlier this week he essentially overpowerd 6'6" 325# Mike Iupati and threw him to the gorund. For Carrington to overpower Alualu says something about this kid's strength.

I watch a lot of SEC ball and remember Saban talking him up. BB and Saban usually have their pre-draft chat, banging heads about various prospects. Betcha Carrington's name will pop up -- along w/ some game film.

Re: Alex Carrington

Odrick also appears to be solidifying himself into the first round.

Yeah, he looked good so far and should have improved his stock. I wouldn't mind him in the first round.

Why not instead have him gain ten pounds and play him at DE as Jarvis' (and dare I say Seymour's?) replacement? He could also prob. play 4-3 DT in passing situations.

Here are my North notes. I'll have the south ones done later... busy day.

i really like Jared Odrick and i think if we could grab him he would make an immediate impact

Something to keep in mind, just knocking someone over doesn't necessarily tell you about his strength, if Carrington had a good angle on him or if he was a tad off-balance just before impact that can make it relatively easy to knock someone over. You'd really need to look at the footage to determine if it was brute force overpowering the other guy.

I can't wait for the game only a couple more daysssssssssssssssssssssssss

Draftdaddy had this to say about Alex Carrington: "Arkansas State defensive end #96 Alex Carrington was dominant again in the Pit, running over blockers with violence. There might not be a limit how high his stock can rise."

Draft Daddy: Blog

This guy was ranked #127 by NFLdraftscout, #158 by the Huddle Report, and #172 by GBNreport. And he is totally dominated the competition at the Senior Bowl by all reports.

How high can he go? Sebastian Vollmer made 2nd round. Can Carrington make that kind of leap? And where is he best suited to play? Ochmed thinks he has Dunlap-like agility and that by losing 10 lbs. he could play the elephant. Or should he bulk up for the 5-technique? At 6'5" 284# he could go either way.

This guy is playing the way many people hoped Jarron Gilbert would turn out to be last year. Now, if only he makes a video jumping out of a pool ....

:) Well we are looking for our Barwin replacement.
We have our raji replacement (or perhaps 2 or 3)
We have our Curry replacment.

We seem to have found our Gilbert replacement.

We seem almost ready for our 2010 Draft discussions.

Barwin -> Austen Lane
Gilbert -> Alex Carrington
Raji -> Dan Williams
Curry -> Rolando McClain

Not too shabby.

Perhaps we should add:

Butler -> Kyle Wilson

Some notes from TFYdraft on Wednesday North practice:

- CB Kyle Wilson: "Except for one pass completion, Wilson had another strong day. Once again he was fast and explosive as well as physical. He plays with a great degree of suddenness and really looks good."

- CB Syd'Quan Thompson: "Thompson showed good ball skills and is effective in press coverage. He possesses decent feet and hips. What he does not have is a second gear and was beaten deep on a number of occasions."

- LB Sean Weatherspoon: "Played physical. He was dishing out some big hits on the ball carriers, but was rarely wrapping them up in the process. Looked comfortable with his coverage assignments and for the most part fought off blocks well."

- LB AJ Edds: "Does a very good job of squaring up on ball carriers and wrapping up. What he lacks in speed and athleticism, he helps make up for a little bit with his fundamentals and effort. Plays smart and was rarely out of position, but it is obvious that he lacks the physical tools of his counterparts."

- DE/DT Jared Odrick: "Unblockable at times throughout this practice. Odrick’s combination of length, quickness, and the ability to throw his hands effectively give this defender a decided advantage versus most of his regular opponents. The former Penn State defensive lineman was a constant presence in the backfield and a handful to block."

- DE Austen Lane: "Improvement is the word of the day. Lane flashed more pass rush ability showing multiple moves and varying up his attack points."

- DE Alex Carrington: "Just continues to look solid all around. His has attacked offensive linemen aggressively. He has tremendous power. Today, Shawn Lauvao became his victim as Carrington blew through and over the blocker with the authority one should expect of a penetrator running a proper stunt. Carrington looks more like a potential 5 technique for 34 based teams with his spectacular play."

- DE Brandon Graham: " An interesting case because Graham continues to be a presence, yet has done nothing truly spectacular to set himself apart as an top talent. He has, and did show the ability, to clean an offensive lineman’s hands with ease and blow right past them. He also can get locked up and become a relative non-factor."

- OT/OG Vladimir Ducasse: "Continued to show promise and disappointment. Ducasse’s first step while run blocking is simply explosive. One could question if he was jumping the snap or he really has that type of burst in short areas. His pass blocking was highly inefficient. One set he would show a nice kick step while mirroring defenders. Others, the tackle was beaten clean by several opponents."

- OG Mike Iupati: "Today, Iupati bumped out and played more right tackle than he did left tackle yesterday. In this particular case, he was not as overmatched as seen previously. His overall technique is still inconsistent, but he was able to get solid fits in his pass sets and hold pass rushers at bay. One area he looked to improve throughout this process was keeping his shoulders square and the footwork which accompanies such positioning."

- WR Jacoby Ford: "Ford definitely stepped up his game today. He is both quick and fast. Ford nicely makes the reception and quickly transitions from making the catch to running after the reception. He does struggle trying to come away with the ball in a crowd and does not really display the strong hands or the ability to pluck the fast ball from the air."

Not too shabby.

Edelman -> Kerry Meier? (don't think hes nearly as quick)
Vollmer -> Any similar this year? (I know its still early, hell what was his status before the draft?)

Some notes from TFYdraft on Wednesday South practice:

- RB/WR Dexter McCluster: "In a term- wow! Showed amazing quickness and burst. Got a rise from scouts after the hole was seemingly closing up then out of nowhere McCluster popped out of the pile."

- OG Mike Johnson: "Played with wide base and was caught leaning on defenders too often. As a result he fell off numerous assignments. He does have very strong hands once he latches on to an opponent."

- DT Terrance Cody: "It is easy to know what to expect of Cody at this point. He is tough to handle one on one by his size. He can reestablish the line of scrimmage when blocked by a single lineman. He demands a double. He is not much of a pass rusher, though he did attempt to throw a move or two in there during individual drills."

- DT Dan Williams: "Very tough to handle in the middle. He fires off the ball low and hard consistently. He guts under offensive linemen’s pads and often overpowers. He can eat up double teams successfully."

- LB Eric Norwood: "Put forth a very solid effort in pass rush drills, consistently beating his man in 1 on 1 drills. He didn’t fare as well in coverage however, where he was caught a step behind on more than one occasion."

- S Taylor Mays: "Once again struggled. Looked terrible in coverage drills. Really struggled pedaling in reverse and cannot drive out of his plant. He rarely made any plays on the action if the pass catcher was just a few feet in front of him."

I also read online that Alex Carrington was making a move up the draft boards with a good effort and showed quickness. I should had copied the link for you.

Odrick is looking like a beast.
