Again, you may not agree with the methodology, but do you agree with the picks?

1. Jared Odrick, 3-4 DE, Penn State
The Big Ten's defensive player of the year ends up in New England, where he'll be tasked with rotating at DE opposite Ty Warren. Odrick has the size necessary for the position and an unrivaled passion for the game.

2 (TEN). George Selvie, 3-4 OLB, South Florida (previously Sean Lee)
A down senior season - after back-to-back All-American campaigns - has dropped Selvie's stock a bit. However, since he can play 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB, versatility is on his side. For the Pats Selvie would become an edge rusher, something he could excel at.

2 (JAX). Jahvid Best, RB, California
Best would be an absolute steal here for the Pats and would create competition in a loaded, yet unspectacular, pack of backs. Best's explosiveness makes him a return threat too.

2. Anthony McCoy, TE, USC (previously Ciron Black)
This CMD has McCoy going at a more appropriate area to a more TE-needy team. The Pats have a whole lot of nothing at the position, as Watson has been unable to capitalize on early career success and the backups are all journeyman (though New England likes those players). With the depth, McCoy can sit and develop. He has great potential.

4. Sam Young, OT, Notre Dame (previously Garrett Graham)

I'd like to see who else was available. I love the Odrick, Best and Young picks, but much prefer someone else to Selvie, and if we take a TE in the second round I'd rather it be Hernandez who looks a proper threat in the passing game.

1. Carlos Dunlap, 3-4 DE, Florida (previously Jared Odrick)
Dunlap has Top 10 talent but character concerns and work ethic issues may cause him to drop to the late-1st or early-2nd round. The Pats must find a suitable replacement for Richard Seymour, since the rotation opposite Ty Warren was unspectacular in 2009.

A TE is going to be a priority for the Pats should they let their current stable walk as FAs. McCoy - who'd need time to develop - could become a solid threat in the passing game.

Actually, based on the DraftTek rankings, most of the rest of the guys I'd want would still be available in the late 7th round anyway (Mike Kafka, Myron Rolle, Alric Arnett, Andrew Quarless, etc.).

Obviously, rankings/projected availabilities are radically different on other big boards (e.g., Scout.com has both Brandon Spikes and Brandon Graham still available at #22).

I usually take the median of several big boards as a shorthand cheat-sheet, but I'm not processing that again till after the Senior Bowl. Then, after the Combine and Free Agency, I'll try to develop a Big Board for each team based on what I perceive to be their needs and tendencies of their personnel decision-makers and go from that.

So, the above is far from my final answer.

Black doesn't have the mobility the Pats look for in their OT's. He did last year when he was down around 310-315, but he's ballooned and looks a tad cumbersome at the Senior Bowl.

I love this draft because Gresham in the second would be the Steal of the Draft IMO.

1. Carlos Dunlap, 3-4 DE, Florida
Wilfork has been franchised, a very good thing for New England's line. Now they need to find a suitable player next to him, opposite Ty Warren. Dunlap could be that guy. Though he didn't have as dominant a college career as expected, he still was unblockable at times. He has some mentality issues but a strong coaching staff could whip him into shape. This could be a steal for the Pats.

2 (JAX). Jerry Hughes, 3-4 OLB, TCU
The defense needs a spark on the outside, something lacking in 2009. Hughes has the makings of an elite edge rusher. He'd likely slot into a rotation early but probably push for a starting spot by mid-year. His size/speed combo. makes him ideal for 3-4 rush OLB, and getting him at this point in the draft looks wonderful.

2 (TEN). Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida
The lack of talented TE depth on the Patriots roster is a tad surprising; it seemed as though they were continually drafting them. However their last draft pick spent on a TE was in 2006 and now Ben Watson is a free agent. Chris Baker remains but there is nothing else on the active roster. Expect this position to be a high priority. Hernandez was being lobbied about as the potential #1 in the class, up with Gresham and Gronkowski.

2. Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State
The stable of RBs grows... or does it? Faulk is a free agent this year. Taylor, Maroney, Morris, and Green-Ellis are free agents after 2010. So while it looks like New England has plenty at RB, that may change soon. Mathews is a solid all-around back who can pick up the tough yards inside and make people miss in space.

I really like this draft. Would substitute a WR for R. Mathews.....
