I thought these 2 former Patriots played one hell of a game yesterday and were role players who helped in the Saints win over the Vikings.

Where was this David Thomas that I saw yesterday,1 or 2 years ago here?

He blocked well, caught several hard thrown passes to him for critical 3rd down completions and was able to get open when Brees was under pressure.

Looking at Randall Gay he was magnificent in pass coverage, especially in the last series when he played slot corner and shut down his man.

Made me wish these two were still here, but maybe they didnt quite fit on this team.

However I do wish them the best and hope Gay takes home another ring and Thomas gets his first

Re: David Thomas & Randall Gay ....

Thomas played well, disagree about Gay. The Vikes seemed to be throwing to wherever he was on the field.

Re: David Thomas & Randall Gay ....

Gay is making way too much $$ for his value IMO. Wasn't his contract like $4+ mill per year. I'd rather go with Wilhite and his peanut contract. People complain about him but Gay is not much better.

Thomas just didn't fit here. I admit I don't quite understand why but he just didn't... nothing you can really do about that.

Well, maybe he was not 'magnificent all game' but if you watch the last series for the Vikings,Gay covered the slot well and kept it closed down - when it mattered the most, he played his best.

Pats got a 7th round draft choice for Thomas. Another great trade.

I take it that was sarcasm

With that being said,I think Chris Baker over David Thomas was a big mistake.

BTW: Does anyone remember if Thomas was cut BEFORE Alex Smith?...can't remember.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Maybe he was one of those that couldn't pick up the systems (ALA Tony Simmons, Chad Jackson and the rest....)

Chad Jackson is not a fair comparison for Thomas...Jackson did not work out here or in Denver,He was a college stud and a big pro dud - Thomas has much more talent then he showed here,Jackson had no talent at all on the pro level.

I seriously doubt Wilhite is making this team unless he shows some dramatic improvement in camp

This offseason I think Belichick will be more critical of his teams players individual performance than at any other time in his time here- Wilhite needs to impress the coach, even at a small salary, what good is he as a wasted roster spot if he can't cover anyone consistently?.

I don't. Baker is a hell of a blocker, almost like having another tackle out there. That's all you need from a #2 tight end. I don't know much about Thomas' blocking, but I know it's not as good as Baker's. He is just a decent receiving tight end and Baker is just as good.

The problem is that, unbelievably, we don't use tight ends as receivers in this offense. They are strictly used as decoys and blockers. I don't know how it makes sense to use someone as a decoy when they're rarely a threat to catch the ball, but that's what I've read.

Re: David Thomas & Randall Gay ....

I can't explain it. He had the kind of bio at Texas that makes you think you found a gem, than he shows a lot of promise against Jax and that was that. He just wasn't a factor after the 06 season.

You'd think with 3 years if he had something we would have seen it. Or does Tom Brady just hate the TE position? :D

Really? Wilhite isn't a starting corner yet, but he always seemed competitive in coverage. He hasn't learned to turn around and play the ball yet. I certainly think he has a better chance of making the team than Wheatley or even someone like Slater/Lockett.

Hey, you just split my thread in two

Re: David Thomas & Randall Gay ....

Thomas is a classic example of a player who when in the right system, will play good.

Re: David Thomas & Randall Gay ....

We didn't let him play. Hard for him to show anything with 5 or 6 plays every few weeks.

NO has featured him as a blocker and TE, he's a smart player from his days in Texas. BB chose to ignore that and dump him for a 7th rounder. Great trade.

No excuse as to why we don't use TEs. We're short on WR, so we just blow off using TEs too? Brilliant!

Re: David Thomas & Randall Gay ....

Gay is a JAG. He was here. He still is in New Orleans. In the two years he has been in NO, he has had 1 INT.

Dave Thomas has been sporatically good for the Saints, but overall he hasn't been much more than a roll player. He has stepped up against some of the bad teams the Saints have played, but yesterday was probably the first time he stepped up in a big game.

I know people on this board like to look at one game and make sweeping judgements, but so far neither player have been that good since they left the Pats.

Re: David Thomas & Randall Gay ....

Well, Thomas certainly looked promising early on in his rookie campaign and then he got injured.

Then in 08, he was relatively healthy and I remember Cassel going to him early on but they just never connected. Then he made that dumb personal foul against the Colts late in the game, and pretty much ended his Patriot career. Getting out of BB's doghouse is a pretty steep climb.

He's not an upgrade over Chris Baker in the blocking aspect. I don't know why the Pats were stupid to get rid of him if he is just a blocking TE and he wouldn't see the field in that capacity.

You can argue that the Pats might have gotten more for him, but I don't think he was a difference maker in any way shape or form.

Re: David Thomas & Randall Gay ....

I too like Baker as our #2. However, Thomas did block well yesterday and played fullback.

For whatever reason Thomas wasn't amking this team. We even went out and signed acquired Alex Smith.

In the end, we chose not even to use a roster spot on the #3 Te, choosing to use linemen to be the #TE and the FB when needed.

Re: David Thomas & Randall Gay ....

Whats the love in with these two guys? Seriously all we've read on here is how good Thomas is, big mistake letting him go Bill, your getting old Bill....

Saints are a team that utilises their TE's more catching the ball so it's obvious he's going to get more "numbers" there (gotta love them stats boys). If he was so good in our system he would have been kept, he was distinctly average at NE and screwed up the game at Indy which was obviously the nail in his coffin. Belichick doesn't suffer fools.

Gay was average at times last night, doing his best impression of pressing recivers. No way in hell Gay is worth the money he wanted, he's a decent nickel back at best.

Pats need alot more than those two. It's sad times when Patriot fans are asking for Randall Gay and David Thomas back, very sad.
