Perfect #3 receiver for us, has the whole package. Good Routes, Hands, goes up and gets the ball, not afraid to go over the middle and good speed. He could also contribute in the return game. Jordan Shipley for #53!

If he fell to the second round, I wouldn't be opposed. I was impressed with Shipley this year. However, I wouldn't be suprised if his value rose to the first round either.

Not for me. He's a slot receiver from what I've seen, a Welker, Stokley type, and seeing that we already have the best in the game, and his possible heir apparent, I don't see a spot.

If we want a proper number three this year, then we're either going to have to take someone like Benn in the first round (because he won't last while our pick in the second - he is insanely talented), or hope that someone like Golden Tate or Damian Williams does fall (unlikely).

I can't imagine Shipley cracking the 1st round. He's a slot receiver, pure and simple. 3rd round, most likely, possibly late 2nd.

I don't want the Pats to take a WR in the first 2 rounds. Right now I have Dez Bryant as the only sure 1st round WR. I'd be thrilled to see Rejus Benn, Golden Tate and Damien Williams make the 1st round and possibly push some other guys down to us, either at 22 or at 42/44.

What about Eric Decker?

Why does a number three receiver have to be a first round talent? At 6'0 Shipley isnt just a pure slot receiver by any stretch of the imagination. He can line up all over the field and create mismatches for defenses. YouTube - Jordan Shipley Career Highlights

I swear these days, if your white and you play receiver people compare you to wes welker lol:rolleyes:

i love shipley too. would be great. how bout #7 from Bowling Green who played in the East-West Shrine Game. he seems like a guy that just knows how to get open. wonder what his 40 time is

There seems to be a lot of quality WRs in this draft. We need to get a few young ones in here, with Edelman and Tate, to learn from Moss and Welker. That way they will be ready when those 2 are gone.

Yeah, seriously. Like Brian Hartline for Miami. He is 6-2 and runs a 4.50, split out wide. A WR just has to be quick enough or strong enough to get off the line or fast enough to eat up cushion, then exploit coverage. I think Shipley can do the quick fast part against most corners. However, Benn is a no-go. That guy doesn't have talent, he has athleticism. Only seven career TDs? What was Benn doing with that athleticism in the red zone? This all-world "talent" was up against college schemes. Welker caught like 20+ TDs for Tech and he was a RB his first season. In college, good WRs catch touchdowns.

The only WRs I want early (rounds 1-2) are Bryant, Shipley, Gilyard, Tate, Lafell, and maybe Damian Williams. Half those guys may not drop to 22.

Later on I like: Dezmon Briscoe, Freddie Barnes, Mike Williams (troubled but real talent), Denario Alexander(awsome the one year he started) and maybe Blair White (produced well his only year starting).

IDK. I'd feel pretty okay with a receiving corps of Moss and Welker and any four of the following:

Edelman
Tate
Shipley
Blair White
Freddie Barnes

Add in another quick back who can catch like Dexter McCluster and a TE who can catch and block like Quarless and opposing defenses might have to be in dime package on nearly every play. Most "non-Revis" secondaries will still have to put two guys on Moss, but they're screwed either way. Even Maroney could probably get some significant yardage running the ball out of that situation.

Plus both White or Barnes would be free up the top of our draft board for other positions.

I'd rather take Barnes in the 3rd or 4th round. Nice little possession receiver. He could be a more talented David Givens for us.

ESPN interview with Barnes.

Interesting fact... Barnes is a QB converted to WR. Reminds me of Edelman! Means he 'reads' the defense like a QB does and tries to take advantage of that to run the best route to get open.
Sounds like he could be an impact rookie if he's as smart as Edelman was at reading the D! In fact that's almost a necessary skill for WR success in the Pats complex option route offense.

Barnes scouting report.

Senior season statline:
"It was in 2009 when Barnes was fully healthy that he emerged as a legitimate NFL slot receiver. Through 12 games he caught an incredible 138 passes for 1,551 yards and 16 scores. As if he did not already do enough, Barnes also emerged as a pretty good punt returner."

He can also contribute on ST as a PUNT returner... Hmm, sounds like a Patriot type receiver to me.

My thought exackerly.

However, I'm not really expecting BB to take any of those three in the draft. I don't know why, but he seems to consistently ignore guys like this. He either goes for a home-run hitter in the second round - Branch, Jackson, Johnson, Tate (who'd have been a second rounder if not for the injury) - or waits till the 6th round or later to pick up a special-teamer/potential returner who might be able to line up at WR once in awhile.

Not to be a buzz-kill, I'm just prepping myself to watch us (depressingly) pass on decent receivers in the mid rounds to take another relatively obscure LB, D-lineman or O-lineman.

Last year, we could've had Hartline, but took McKenzie; could have had Austin Collie but took Ohrnberger. In 08 we could've gotten Early Doucet, but took Crable. In 07, we could have had Breaston, but took Kareem Brown (after, of course, trading for Welker and Moss). In 06 it was Garrett Mills and Gostkowski over Brandon Marshall (after trading up for Chad Jackson over Greg Jennings). In 04, we took Marquise Hill (RIP) over Berrian and Gus Scott over Cotchery. In 03, we traded up for Bethel Johnson over Anquan Boldin (though, in fairness, beyond Boldin and Calvin Johnson, the rest of that WR class was a total bust).

So, I seriously doubt we'll be seeing Shipley or Barnes or White in a Pats uniform anytime soon.

On the flip side, how many TEs has BB drafted the last two years?

I would rather have Tate in the second round, if he runs well.

Shipley brings Welker like smarts, but not as much quick twitch. To me he seems like a slot receiver in the NFL.

Decker is a guy that I think BB needs to look at in the later rounds. That kid was a beast on the outside, difficult to jam and had such tremendous hands and concentration. If he is recovered from the injury, he could be special running option routes in our offense.

Can't speak to Shipley, but Barnes and White could rejoin NE in 2011.

Zero.

Jonathan Stupar (now with BUF) was an after-draft pickup in 08. He's also picked up a couple in trades and free agency (not counting Chris Baker): Stephen Spach, Brad Listorti, Tyson DeVree, Michael Matthews, Alex Smith. Kyle Brady was cut at the end of 07 and Marcus Pollard was on the Camp roster in 08 (I was thinking Marcellus Rivers, but he was 07). Still have Robbie Agnone and Rob Myers on the P/S, I think.

So, he's drafted none, but he's certainly played around with staffing the position a lot. AFAIK, most of these guys were (reputedly) solid blocking TEs who might be able to catch now-and-then (Matthews, I think, was almost exclusively a blocker).

Wait. What was your question, again?

Which still points to how rare the players whom BB favors for the position are, but how he's also adjusting his acquisition methods to the reality of his offense's tendencies. This is why I'm expecting him to shop for a TE on Day Three, whether it's a speedier, but adequate blocking kid like Quarless, or a slower, but still well-rounded kid like Dray.

Tate could go in the first, I would take him if he slips to the second over Ship but I doubt it. Shipley isnt as quick in tight spaces as Welker but he has better speed. Hes a bigger target and runs fluid routes gets good separation and he goes up and gets the ball with his hands! He can do alot of what Welker does but hes not another Welker, he brings more to the team because he can move around. This is one guy I dont want to see playing for the Jets next season.

Yeah, I was liking Decker a lot before his injury, too.

Anyway, my point is that what I'd like to see for a change - instead of pinning all our hopes on one second-round speedster who may not ever be able to run routes - is BB bring in a bunch of guys from later rounds who have proven they can run crisp routes, make smart adjustments, consistently get open in all kinds of coverages and consistently make the catch on even less than perfect throws. Guys you can count on to move the chains. I don't care if they're particularly tall or fast or look like a slot receiver. You get a couple more guys like that out in the pattern with some combo of Moss and/or Edelman and/or Welker and SOMEbody is going to be open nearly every time and you're gonna have a lot of sustained scoring drives.

That's my theory, anyway. ;)

But what I'm also saying is that I really don't expect that to happen. :(
