Drafting a TE

I like how the second play shows him make a catch and then let the football get knocked out of his hands. . . .

Yeah, he can move down field, run some routes, block, but nowhere near a finished product. I thought the video was honest. Probably a UDFA. I think if we lose Watson then Bill will draft with 40 time in mind. As long as the guy is also 6-3, 250+.....;)

The Pats should carry at least 3 tight ends. Last year appeared to be an aberration to me. Watson and Baker, and that's it? Dray sounds like he would at the very least fill the void that Graham left behind - an awesome blocking tight end. Now if he can catch too that's gravy. Since blocking tight ends don't usually go high, we can probably snag him for a midround pick, 3rd/4th rounder.

Right now Dray's flying under the radar, and is a 5th-7th round pick. He is in the Texas vs. the Nation Game, and he did get a combine invite, however, so he could climb. He sounds fabulous.

Have you seen him play much? Thoughts? The Huddle Report profile makes him sound like the next Ben Coates. :)

I watched three Stanford games and he reminds me of Peek of Alabama. He is not the fastest TE and will have trouble separating in the NFL, but as a blocker, he is really special.

When lined up on the side of the OT, he runs up and in and destroys the MLB or safety so Gerhart can plow through. It shows he can block in space. On the end of the line he is really good at sealing off the DE or OLB and the OT then seals to create a nice crease for Gerhart.
The amazing thing is sometimes they run this play back to back; only moving from the left side to the right side and it works well on either side. In part because the TE is really good at turning his man.

PS: The OG for Stanford is an amazing road grader. Not a slobby fat "lean on the Dline" offensive guard, but a true technician. A poor man's Hutchinson or Faneca. If he ever learns to pass protect, he could be a fixture in the pro bowl for years to come.

I need to see how he runs and catches to get a better picture, but the tape says 3rd or 4th.

I've mentioned Quarless in a couple of threads. Just in case your wondering. Yes, he has he most obnoxious tatoo I've seen. Upper back of left arm, "God's". Upper back of right arm "Gift", Would I like to be a fly on the wall when BB asks him; What's up with that? He doesn't really come across that way on the field. No chest-thumping, exoctic celebrations, etc. Just not sure why he did it.

The OG you're talking about is junior Andrew Phillips, and I agree, he is special. Another classics major. 6'5", 300#. NFLdraftscout currently ranks him #34 among OG prospects for 2011, which is absurd.

Here's my take on TE/RW's...just get guys who can play and want to win.
Too much is made about how tall the guy is, weight and all those other stats.
Fred Biletnikoff was Not very big and he's in the HOF. I believe Steve Smith is only 5/8 or 5 9"
Just my 2cents.

David Thomas certainly proved a lot of us right last night. I never understood how they used him or letting him go. More than ever my stance is don't bother using a top pick on a TE if you're going to use him as a blocker 50+% of the time, which they will.

Drew Brees is under center enough to use him and use him well. This team needs to figure out if they want to have a TE who can be split out or a guy who plays on the end of the line. I honestly don't think they know. A guy like Ben Watson I think they thought they could get both. He distinguished himself as neither.
