CJ Spiller or Mike Iupati - Who you got?

A lot on here really like Spiller but I have to go with Iupati, you win on the lines.

With the Pats first round pick, the value is on CJ Spiller. Don't like Spiller as much as most because I think a Dexter McCluster (sp?) is just as good, albeit troubled, than Spiller and could be had in the late second or third round.

I certainly wouldn't consider moving up in the 1st for Iupati. I don't think he's that exceptional. I think he's a very good guard, and I'd love to have him, but he's not that good.

Spiller, OTOH, is an elite talent and the best offensive playmaker in the draft. We can get a very good OG in the 2nd round. There's only 1 Spiller in this draft.

Spiller would be a huge upgrade at runningback and at kick returner. He would also be even more important catching the ball if Welker is a no-go. If we go after a playmaker I seriously hope its for a guy who scored lots of touchdowns. They better have been the number one option in the Red Zone for their college team and won those battles.

Not sure I'd trade up for either one. But, I'd take Spiller over "spuds"(that's going to be his nickname isn't it?).

Let's make it simple:

1. The only players I would consider moving up further than Atlanta at #19/20 are ILB Rolando McClain and CB Joe Haden (I'm not including Suh, who would cost our entire draft). If either was available in the 10-15 range then a trade-up should be considered, depending on the cost. I really hope we don't need to get a CB out of this draft, however.

2. Depending on how much BB liked them, I could see trading up to #19/20 with Atlanta for one or more players. This could be a small trade up from #22 (roughly the cost of a 4th round pick), or trading 2 of our 2nd round picks (such as #42/44 and 47/48 or 53; for example, 42 + 53 = 850 points, which is the value of the #20 pick.) The guys I think could possibly be included in this list are DE Carlos Dunlap, DE Jason Pierre-Paul, RB CJ Spiller and DT/DE Dan Williams, but it would totally depend on who BB likes and how much he likes them. For all I know he falls in love with Brian Price and thinks he's the 3-4 DE of the future. Nothing would surprise me at this point.

Just having some fun with the draft as I'm sure you know. Nothing us fans can do until draft day anyway but wait.

Most teams lose value by trading up. I'm pretty sure most teams still use Jimmy Johnson's value chart. An average trade-up usually results in a loss equal to a 7th rounder. But if a team has leverage then a trade-up will cost you a lot. Of course the top four picks are overvalued on the chart, so they aren't traded.

I would not trade up for Iupati.

I don't think that we will have to, and I am pretty split between them. I really DO think that Iupati is exceptional, and will be a pro-bowl guard. That said, Spiller is quite dynamic at position(s) that we need some playmakers.

I agree with Mayo that the two guys I'd trade up for would be McClain and Haden, although I'd think twice if Eric Berry made it past #5 somehow.

It depends really do they view Spiller as a cant miss? Id take Iupati if it meant we could grab Best in the 2nd then.

To answer the OP -- neither.

McClain is the ONLY one I'd move up for at a reasonable cost. What's reasonable? Well, BB traded a 3rd and 7th for Graham, so I'd think ONLY one of the Pats second-rounders is as high as BB would go, and that's only because he has three of them. Yes it's true there are no sure things in the draft...but McClain comes close as a near perfect fit for the Pats D. JMO.

I'm hoping BB and the FO have a great vacation because in early Feb. they have lots of important decisions to make on their own FA's. In addition, do they keep Light at LT, does Neal retire, can Kaczur play RG, Vollmer at RT, upgrade over Koppen? And that's just the offensive line. We'll know soon enough their direction, and until then we can daydream all we want...

I would not trade up for Iupati.

I agree. He has limited zone blocking experience and does not appear to fit BB's model of the athletic mobile type OG.

Johnson of Alabama is a better fit with experience in a zone blocking scheme similar to ours.

I think Spiller is going to explode up the draft boards when teams see him run a 4.3 and see how well he catches the ball.

I would consider trading up for Mt. Cody or McClain.

BB could trade the #22 for an Aborigine barmaid, a ficus, and a complete set of Ginsu knives and yet, by the middle of training camp, it would all start to make a twisted sort of sense.

I posted that on a mock draft site awhile back. Unsurprisingly, only Pats fans got it.

Spiller.

Remember when we had an impact RB? When was that? The first year of Corey Dillon being here, maybe. Curtis Martin, definitely.

We need to take the pressure off Brady. This offense can't be one-dimensional now that our receivers are no longer the tops in the league and our QB isn't the best in the business. At least two QBs outplayed Brady this year, more like three.

We need an explosive RB. And this position makes the transition easiest from the college ranks. I remember **** Gosselin predicting that last year that Percy Harvin would be the offensive rookie of the year.

I wonder what he thinks of Spiller, who looks like he will make a big impact in the league.

Don't forget the Pats traded or released O linemen for room--and these guys played for other teams, like Hochstein who played admirably in Denver and O'Callaghan in Kansas City.

But we have AARP at running back and a disappointment in LaMa. Spiller, hands down.

If it's just those two, Spiller, though I wouldn't trade up very far - couple of spots, maybe. Lotta potentially very good guards will still be available in Round Two and maybe even later.

About the only guy I've seen so far that I'd trade up as much as 10 spots to get would be McClain - not only for his play (the real deal), but because the guy is the very vocal QB/Leader of his defense. I just have the distinct impression he could become the next Ray Lewis. And, wouldn't it be nice to have one of those for the next 8-12 years?
