Interesting that mcdaniels tells a guy who turned the worst defense to the 7th ranked defense how to do his job.

Funny how Pees aparently has no problem being less aggresive and being told exactly what to do. This proves what lots of people have said about pees.

It's a Borges' piece:

Dean Pees may find trouble in Denver - BostonHerald.com

Here are some key lines with as much of the snarkiness removed as possible:

he called in defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and told him in no uncertain terms his Broncos would not be blitzing next season like they did this year.

McDaniels’ problem with Nolan was that he’d grown up (sort of) under Belichick’s less wild-eyed defensive philosophy. He was never comfortable with the amount of run blitzes Nolan favored or his gambling style against the pass. He wanted to tone things down, sticking with the 3-4 but with more control. Pees is well suited to provide that.

Sources in Denver claimed last night that McDaniels was in his office trying to decide between the 60-year-old Pees, who has had a long-time association with his family as head coach at Kent State where he offered a job to McDaniels’ father and recruited his brother, Ben, and 46-year-old linebacker coach Don Martindale, a former Oakland Raiders assistant hired last year by McDaniels. Martindale has not coordinated a defense since he left Western Illinois in 1999. They say Pees is the leading candidate in the same way Secretariat once led the Belmont Stakes.

Borges leaves out some important items in his piece in favor of taking some shots at McDaniels, which makes the article less than it could have been, but there are still some decent nuggets of information available to the reader.

Borges hints that Pees left on his own volition because he didn't want to be here anymore and had a job waiting - but also acknowledges that Pees isn't for sure to replace Nolan. While I clearly see the other side, overall him not being asked back still adds up more than him choosing to leave to me.

If Pees left because he felt constrained by BB's presence and by the style of defense that Belichick prefers (all speculation by the way), why on earth would he go to Denver to work for McDaniels who wants to run a Belichick style defense?

I may be reading this wrong, but I take it as the usual read/react, hope the DL gets to the QB type of D we have watched the last few years will not be leaving with Pees; but rather is a Belichick staple and here for the long haul.

Thanks for the links.....

I wonder how the Denver fanbase feels about the job Nolan did. Maybe Nolan would have been better off paired with a deffensive minded HC. Someone whom could let him know when it's time to scale back the pressure. Sounds like they had a, "you coach your side and I'll coach myside of the ball" approach. That worked great for about 8 games.

BB : :nono: Blizting, got it Pees !

DP : Yes Sir Mr BB :scared:

Seriously, when you don't have "athletic" players on your D, you can't do much. When you play a "bend but not break" roulette, it worked for a while, but rest of NFL finally caught up. Goes back to drafting philosophy last few yrs. Even after drafting, Pressure D has never been their philosophy. Today's NFL is built on pressure D since QB's are way too good, combined with rules set for Offenses to succeed.

When likes of Henne can carve up your D, there's funamental problem with the approach. Patriots teams of early decade were chameleons who adapted to the opponent to take away what opponent did best. 2005 onwards the team has completely gone away from that approach, anomaly being 2007 year since BB/Pioli decided to throw their way to win SB, except the Giants gameplan blew up in their face, why, because of Pressure D

“It’s time for my wife and I to just sit back now, and not commit to anything,” Pees said. “I want to be fair to New England because of how well the Patriots have treated me. I had some reservations, and to be fair to everyone, this had to be done.”

We'll see how long before he's named the new DC of the donkos.

Nolan's defense collapsed the moment that teams began doing what they should have from the beginning, which was to run the ball right at the nose. I expect the Broncos and Chiefs to be on the hunt for NTs this offseason, which is one of the reasons I'm confident that Wilfork will be franchised.

I think the Broncos and Chiefs will be looking long and hard at the NTs available in this year's draft.

Exactly- and not just a BB-style defense, but a BB-style management.

I never get past the first couple sentences of his articles. I thought Marshall didn't play because he had a hamstring injury. I thought this is what the suspension was all about.

Borges is confused. If McDaniels didn't suspend Marshall, Marshall would not have played. That's what the whole thing was about in the first place.

Not sure how you make the jump from McDaniels telling Nolan he wants less blitzing to Pees won't blitz? Where is the connection?

And why is it that the so many people around here think blitzing is the answer to every defensive turn around in the NFL. Just like the Jets, the Broncos brought in some key defensive players. I like to think Brian Dawkins had a little something to do with the defensive turn around in Denver, as well as some of the other FA pickups they made.

New Starters on Defense:

CB Andre Goodman
FS Brian Dawkins
SS Reynaldo Hill
LB Andra Davis

Key FA Signings for depth

Ty Law, Vonnie Holliday, Darrell Reid.

So they have 4 new starters at key positions, change to a 3-4 and have Dumervil emerge as an absolute beast from the OLB spot, and the only thing that changed on that defense is that they blitz more? Do you have any proof that the 2009 Broncos blitzed more often than the 2008 Broncos?

Also, let's not forget that they dumped a QB that threw 18 Int's in 2008. And replaced him with one that threw 12.

But I'm sure it was all due to blitzing just like the Jets.
