OT: Dolphins hire Mike Nolan as DC

They didn't waste any time.

The AFCE is getting stronger. Despite Denver's 2nd half defensive collapse, Nolan should make Miami's defense better, Chad Henne shows promise and should mature, and their young CB's will have a year of experience under their belts. The Jets are one game from the SB, have a young QB getting valuable experience playing under NFL pressure, and are one WR and one CB away form having a really solid starting lineup.

Move forwards or move backwards. Treading water doesn't work. I think we still have the best nucleus in the AFCE, but not by much anymore, and we have a lot of holes to fix.

'Fins scare me. No question. Their pass rush may suffer a little next year w/ and old Porter and Taylor. They are in the same boat as the Pats in that regard.

The Dolphins scare me a lot less than the Jets do.

They still don't have much to speak of at LB.

coool! Looks like were just going to sit back and a) hire the guy that nobody wants or b) go in house.

I don't know. The Dolphins defense is old and not all that good. Jason Ferguson will be 36 in November, Jason Taylor will be 36 at the start of the season (if he is even back), Joey Porter is going to be 33 (if he is even back), Will Allen will be 32, and Yerimiah Bell will be 32. That is 5 starters (although Allen went IR pretty early and isn't guaranteed a starting job back).

I think the Dolphins are going to have to rebuild their defense. They still need to upgrade their receiving corp while give Ronnie Brown a long term deal. I think the Dolphins are primed to take a step back unless they are very active in free agency and their owner doesn't exactly have the deepest pockets.

I'm getting ahead of myself, but the Pats could very well have the worst defense in the AFC East next year. Losing Bodden and Wilfork will only nail that down. Meanwhile, it seems like the Jets have got all their defensive pieces together and the Dolphins are right behind them. Buffalo is the question mark.

Lovely! When the hell are they going to get some solid coordinators and keep them?

Good points.

I don't know what Ross' deal is. The guy has a net worth ($3.2b) higher than Kraft's but is panhandling every celebrity to buy a stake in the team. According to Forbes, the team is healthy financially. Just odd.

If Wilfork and Bodden leave, and the team takes no effort to address its needs, this could happen, but the phins' defense has a ridiculous amount of holes along with the Bills. The Phins have some good players such as Wake and Bell but they're all getting up in age. They have a terrible FS in Wilson, a weak ILB corp, no one opposite of Wake, a huge ? at NT, and two rookies at CB who were statistically the two worst CBs in the division. Buffalo had a historically bad run defense and need to completely overhaul their dline and get another competent LB next to Poz.

Well, where is his money. There are plenty of billionaires who are billionaires because of assets or paper (stocks, bonds, etc.) and aren't very liquid. Ross could be in that situation.

Success causes teams to lose coordinators. McDaniels was a solid coordinator and the Pats kept him for four years. There is no reason to believe the Pats can't get the same type of production out of Matt Patricia on the defensive side.

Or, he could just be incredibly cheap (more than likely).

"Treading water doesn't work". I like that. The Patriots better be

active in free agency and have a good draft or the rest of the AFC East

will leave them in the dust.

We all know what happens when you stick with aging LBs for too long

Other than Belichick, the Patriots don't pay the other coaches very well.
This is why they don't have well known coordinators and use coaching
assistants as position coaches. They also have one of the smallest
coaching staffs in the NFL.
