Gasper: Wanted: Stand-up guy

Re: Gasper:Wanted: Stand-up guy

You only just noticed that? He'll be worse next year.

He takes almost the whole article to get to the point of asking should the Patriots not be so "in-house" with the choosing of their coordinators. It's a perfectly fine point/question, but as a Boston Sports Writer, he is obligated to be snide and passive. In the end, his content is less important than the style he writes with.

Re: Gasper:Wanted: Stand-up guy

It's alright as a piece, but it's more of an editorial than anything else. Unfortunately, for the author, it's an editorial on well-worn territory.

Re: Gasper:Wanted: Stand-up guy

Gasper has been working on his edge so he can snag air time on Felger's show. It's really sad what the sports talk market in this town has done to the dying print media. It's comical to listen to Felger reverently wash this kids balls like he's an insider... All depends on what you bring him I guess. Jonathan gets talked over because Felger doesn't want to hear what a mere team president has to say...

I'll say this for Borges though, at least he had his own 20 odd years of experience covering the league to draw on when he undertook his little vendetta with BB, who at the time had just landed here as a purported genius DC who failed as a HC.

Gasper's arrogance is just laughable. A couple of years ago he was promoted to Mike Reiss' waterboy. If his own cheapskate employer didn't promote from within he'd still be covering HS sports for the Globe's regional sports section, or unemployed.

This must be let the intern handle titles week at the Globe, too. At first title glance I thought this was an article about needing a passrusher or a clubhouse leader on defense.

C'mon guys, why is every writer who writes his opinion the next borges?
Do you folks realize anytime someone writes an article that is not about how great the pats are the boilerplate response on here is that they are idiots. Should glasper have written how pierte woods is going to be a passrushing monster anf wilhite is on the same career path as revis. Since crennell left the inhouse guys have come up with defenses that either cant stop the run, cant generate a passrush, or cannot produce turnovers. The only reason this team has decent stats is because they play 6 games a year against lame offenses from their division. Not sure why people think patricia will bring anything different then the last 2 mediocre dc's.

I think what Gasper says is fairly accurate from a reporting standpoint and I don't mind the contrarian viewpoint. However, I don't like his approach or style from a print-perspective. He just hasn't earned the credibility with me. He wants to be polarizing. Thats fine. The problem is that he doesn't have the cache, the seasoning or the history in this town to give him credibility he needs to be a voice WE NEED to listen to. At least Borges, Felger and Mazz covered the scene here for 10+ years before getting their air-time. I just think Gasper needed more time in the trenches to command respect.

I don't expect mid-80s Mike Madden, Willie McDonough or Larry Whiteside quality coverage and credibility, but IMO hes just another loud voice without any substance. Maybe I'm just too old (not even 40 yet!- pathetic.)

My .02$

Sometimes the truth hurts... I know people want to bash writers who hate on the patirots, but this was not a bash article, it was a fair assesment.

I thought the piece was a reach and smacked of a young reporter trying too hard to be provocative and clever. He puts himself in the position of saying that he sees a big blind spot in BB's management style which BB is too ignorant or egotistical to address. It's a bit over the top for a twentysomething newspaper kid to drop bombs on a Hall of Fame NFL coach, but unfortunately that's the style of "blog-opinion" journalism even the Globe is stooping to.

I guess I'll have to read it now since that is what I thought it was.

Spot-on, Tunescribe. That's what I'm talking about. Even those of us who have MBAs or BSs in biz admin or are managers at quality companies couldn't possibly have a single clue as to what is required to run an NFL franchise. Why should be take what Gasper says as gospel?

To my point what a guy like Willie McDonough would do is talk to Belichick, Kraft or other high-level league execs, highlight other management dynamics in other franchise and take a historical view of what hasn't worked and what has at the FO and coaching level and apply that to what is going on here THEN offer an op/ed.

Gasper did none of that. I want to be informed- not be shoveled more of the same slop that I hear on the radiowaves.I thought thats what the print media used to do. Obviously that has changed- for the worse IMO.

Sure it was. By a kid who was in diapers when Belichick was developing his scheme with the Giants under Parcell's, another guy who develops and promotes from within. And who had matured to covering HS sports by the time he won his 3rd championship as a HC here.

Because opinions are truly like *******s, we all have 'em. This kid has never even covered an NFL team as a beat reporter, he skipped right from blog assistant and beat reporters backup to columnist. Had we listened to Borges and his ilk a decade ago, and quite a few did as I recall, there would be no Lombardi's in the case and no superbowl exposure off of which most of the half baked opinions spewed by fans and media here emanate. This clown in his arrogance has determined Belichick Belichick should throw the baby out with the bath water and abandon the system that has won him 5 freakin' rings that should have been 6 had a handful of his players simply executed better and a slam dunk first ballot berth in the HOF alongside one of his earlier gameplans not to mention won this franchise more total games than any team in the league in the last decade. Why? Because we didn't win THIS year while the headed for sub .500 JETS are headed to the AFCC after being gifted a playoff berth.

Meanwhile, the heavyweight counter part brought in to shore up their lightweight Patriots coverage since they had to can Borges for plagerizing and lost Reiss to ESPN, a guy who has bounced around like a ping pong ball in the last two years making the oddly circular journey from Metro West blogger to DMN blogger to TSN columnist to Globe NFL columnist has determined in his wisdom the problem is all a result of us not drafting as smartly as the, you got it, NY JETS. A team that hasn't won a damn thing since the year the $0.49 Big Mack debuted.

It's blog/Twitter/Facebook/Myspace/Youtube/soundbyte/cell-phone video syndrome, and it's wrecking quality journalism as we know it. Newspapers should stop competing with ephemeral info sources, accept taking a smaller piece of the pie, and get back to what they do best. There will always be those of us who value substantive news/opinion. At least, I hope so.

I'm glad he's getting to show his true colors. I never thought he offered much when Reiss was there, but he kept getting tons of face time. Now Reiss is gone he's running the show and this is the result. I haven't been to that site since.

Re: Gasper:Wanted: Stand-up guy

Gasper's arrogance is just laughable.

It extends from immaturity and naivete, and it saddens me to see this style of approach encouraged by a once-reputable news source.

im trying really hard to understand peoples logic. First no one has yet to come up with a passage in the article that was truly negative. Wouldnt be surprised if some of you complaining even read the article. Also you guys state that since he's new he cant have a negative opinion. You guys are basically saying he needs to cover the Pats for 10 years writing only positive things before he can criticize the patriots. The guy got the job and is told to write a story about a topic everyone is wondering about-the next DC of the Patriots. The Pats defense seems to have some issue every year. mangini and pees NFL experience was all under belichick. Ever since Romeo left the pats have either struggled against the run, the pass, rushing the passer, or creating turnovers. What makes people so sure that Patricia will come up with fresh ideas considering hes been studying under the same people. Sorry that gasper has an opinion. He could have easily written a story about patricia where he interviews his high school coach and mom and dad, where they surprisingly tell us they always knew he would be a leader and is perfect for the job, that way everyone around here gets excited since high school coaches and parents never have an unbiased opinion. Last years Pats were so stale and boring, never coming up with the clutch play on either side of the ball. they reminded me of carrolls first year with the pats. good enough to beat mediocre teams and smoke bad teams but lose to the good teams.

I guess you could say he's Gasp-ing at straws. :D

Shooting the messenger rather than dealing with the message is a full-time activity around here. I hope that helps to explain it.

No. Read the posts. Felger and Borges have ripped this team for years. I don't like them, but they do have some street-cred- unlike Gasper.

Wrong. 2006 and 2007 defenses were good to very good in almost all the key areas you need to be. Just didn't make plays when they needed to be made.

What makes people so sure that Patricia will come up with fresh ideas considering hes been studying under the same people. Sorry that gasper has an opinion. As I said, I don't have problem with his opinion. I have a problem with his credibility and as a so-called expert on all-things-Pats, he is useless noise as opposed to being an op/ed that has some credibility.

Don't you think it would help to hear from a "messenger" with well-researched, supportive information to back up his opinion? Everyone has an "opinion." Simply being able to turn a clever phrase doesn't quite cut it.
