here is how I would have handled this particular situation...
Let the cops hancuff me but before I leave locate a couple of even keel fans as witnesses to back up my story and what I was doing.
Let me tell my story and have the witnesses back me up and explain the full details of the story.
I have no problem cheering for your team, that is not a crime as far as I know. But when you do it to a provoking level, and someone gets provoked, then a situation is going to follow so don't be surprised and all innocent if something happens. This is just common sense.
The dude that gets all defiant after the Jets fan left is another tool. Just explain the situation to him outside the environment of the arrest, like in another part of the stadium. Instead he gets all "you can't arest an innocent man".
Go tell the cop what happened, you have people to back it up, the cop says feel free to cheer your team, not to provoke people by turning around and being kind of an idiot about it. There is a common sense line that is different for different people.
Why people let things get all out of whack is beyond me....
