Lets be honest; they have one of the best defenses in the league and we do not. They run the ball well and we do not.

We have a better QB and coach but it appears we have more off season issues to address than they do.

Do you think this will affect how BB approaches FA/DRAFT or not? Do we need to match up better with them.

They are the team we have to beat next year to win the East.

The Pats needs are the same now as they were this morning. Pass rushing, WR's, linebackers, RG, DE and maybe a RB.

If this has any affect on this draft, I hope it is to make certain the Pats cash in all their draft chips now

We need to upgrade our team in some key areas, or I do not think we will win the AFCE next year, for several reasons:

1. The Jets should get better. Getting to the AFCCG has only got to help them in their maturation process. Several of their key players, especially Sanchez, are still developing.

2. We have a brutal schedule next year.

I think that to stand still is to go backwards. Stand pat and make a few tweaks here and there and we will finish 8-8 or 9-7.

Hopefully the Jets' success drives us to be more aggressive, and to go after talented players instead of just building depth and "value". We also need to build a more diversified approach on offense and a more aggressive defense. That is definitely an achievable goal, but it won't be achieved by standing on what we currently have in place.

As usual you are right on Mayo.

1. The Jets should get better. This is true.

2 We have a brutal schedule next year. yes

3 Hopefully the Jets' success drives us to be more aggressive.
This what I hope happens.

OTOH:

(A) The JEST schedule is only marginally less brutal (they get HOU and DEN instead of IND and SD).

(B) Barring a new CBA, the JEST are now limited to replacing FAs they lose.

It absolutely pisses me off that the only pressing need they have is at WR and maybe another corner.

Yup. And there's lots of depth at both in the draft, even at the end of the round. I had them taking Damien Williams in the 1st and Brandon Ghee in the 2nd in my most recent mock. A couple of quality picks like that to fill holes, along with Sanchez developing, and they would have a very solid roster.

Yet again, the jets can afford to go after two top players.

Is this where the Jets bandwagon picks up?

Sure, the Jets have a defense that rivals the best the Steelers or Ravens put on the field this decade. And, yeah, they can run the ball with Jones or Greene, but I still don't see the passing threat (outside of Keller). They remind me of the Ravens with Jamal Lewis, Sharpe and Dilfer. They were a team that could be beat, so I'm not afraid of the dominance of the Jets in the next decade.

And there seems to be this defeated attitude with some Pats fans as if they can't hit it big with some draft picks and be right back in the Super Bowl mix. Ever draft has a few studs and if the Pats can get a couple of them, I think they would be well on their way to dominance.

One thing is for sure, Brian Schottenhamier is more likely to find a new job than any of the Pats coordinators. Young QBs losing talented OCs is a bad thing. Fingers crossed they suffer from their success much like the Pats did when they lost Crennel, Weis, Mangini, McDaniels and Pioli.

Yeah, Sanchez was stunning with that 100 yard performance. Of course he could take a huge step forward but for now he's a below average QB who looks like he's stepping into a hole whenever he throws.

Who's afraid of the big, bad Jest ? Not me.

We should be able to make more gains in the draft too, having higher picks in each round and two more #2s than they have. They don't have their #3 either, that was for Edwards.

Young shottneheimer has already refused to interview for the buffalo job. He wants to stay for awhile. yes he is more likely to get a HC offer than our coordinators. That could be because we currently don't have any coordinators, unless you are counting our assistant HC who will retire a patriot.

Yes there will be a jets bandwagon starting, but not here on this patriot board. You note well that the jets have holes in their passing game. A month ago they were considered hopeless! They have the #1 defense in football and the #1 running game. If they had a top 5 passing game as we do, they would be one of the strongest teams ever. Yes, they are indeed like Dilfer's ravens, who won a SB as I recall. The difference is that their needs are correctable and they can be expected to improve from this year's team. BALT didn't last long.

The Jets remind me of the Steelers a few years back. Hacklisberger's first SB win to be exact. That team eas near the top but not dominant in any means.

I think you could build a pretty good team by using a draft strategy of targeting guys who have the potential to be elite impact players in the 10-20 range of the draft, instead of going for "value". You can often find elite players in that range, and the cost is not prohibitive the way it is for top 10 picks. The sweet spot of the draft is generally considered to be in the 11-13 range.

Some examples:

- We passed up Troy Polamalu in 2003 (he went #16 to Pittsburgh) to trade up from 14 to 13 for Ty Warren, who has been solid but not spectacular at 3-4 DE.

- Haloti Ngata was an elite 3-4 DE prospect in 2006 who was predicted to go #8 to Buffalo, but slipped a bit. Baltimore traded up from #13 to #12 to get him. We could have traded #21 (800 points) and #52 (380 points) to trade up to #12 (1200 points; Baltimore offered less total points in trade). Imagine what a DL of Ngata, Wilfork and Seymour could have done. Cleveland took Kamerion Wimbley at 13, and they could likely have gotten him latter, or taken Manny Lawson at 21. We would have had 75 and 85 still available, and probably could have traded back into the 2nd round to take Maurice Jones-Drew at RB.

I would argue that if we had done either of those things we would have a couple more Super Bowl rings.

We've gotten lucky and gotten impact players in the latter parts of the 1st round (Wilfork, Mankins), but the odds are much less.

I'd like to see the team identify some impact players, and go after one or more of them. We have plenty of ammo. I've suggested trading 42 and 47 to move up to 19, and target CJ Spiller and Carlos Dunlap, but there are other possibilities. Rolando McClain (8-12 range), Joe Haden (8-12 range), Dan Morgan (likely top 10), Jason Pierre-Paul, Terrance Cody and Dan Williams come to mind as possible guys who could develop into major impact players for us. If the right guy slips a bit, go after him.

It absolutely pisses me off that the only pressing need they have is at WR and maybe another corner.

They also need depth everywhere since they are so front loaded. The Jets were fortunate to only have 1 player on IR this yr. A few key injuries and they will feel it much more than the Pats.

Thats key they haven't had many injuries and that usually catches up to you but they are not thinking about that now it's Super bowl or bust.

The thing is their NT went out and they survived fine, aside from the Dline and Corner they have just as much depth as we have on the defensive side of the ball, and on offense they lost Leon Washington...IMO Leon is their best offensive player (skill positions). So look what the Jets have lost, Second best defensive player (Kris Jenkins) and best offensive player (leon Washington) and they are still in the AFCG.

You can also build a totally hopeless team from top rated players draft in the 10-15 range.

And if the Colts and the Bengals hadn't both rolled over and played dead, they wouldn't have been in the playoffs, period.

Oh, one other note: Revis' deal voids after 2010, and the JEST cannot franchise him.

I hope the Jets win makes the Patriots concentrate their efforts

on the 2010 season. This current team has numerous defficiencies

and cannot afford to trade 2010 draft picks for 2011 picks.
