The Pats still won the AFC East this year. They are in position to make moves in both free agency and in the draft. Odds are the Jets won't be able to do much to improve. Why is saying that the Pats will stay atop the AFC East is such a stretch.

I know even some the faithful are really down on the team now, but it isn't like the Pats went 6-10. The Pats pass rush will likely be much better next year which should improve the entire defense. They will get depth at WR and the o-line. Welker could be back for the start of the season. I expect the Pats to be better next year than they are this year. I don't know if I can say that about the Jets at this point.

Welker's MCL must heal before surgery putting surgery in late February so don't think he will even be close to returning before Thanksgiving.

The team has no choice but to have a near PERFECT offseason in terms of draft picks that a few start in thier rookie year with an impact and even more importantly having some solid veterans signed as well..no more Galloway and Burgess bargain basement crap or this team will be creeping more towards the lions than the Colts and Saints.

Belichick better not have any brain farts this offseason if the team is to PROgress and not Digress..no more time for mistakes in judgement.

Wouldn't want the team to digress, that's for sure.

Seriously, dude, the Pats went 10-6 and won the division with a recouping QB and a ton of injuries and issues. There is nothing to suggest they are done or need a PERFECT off-season. People have been prdedicting the demise of the Pats for years now and they keep winning the division.

They lost a playoff game. Yeah, okay. If the Colts lose to the Ravens next weekend will you be saying that the Colts are done? THe Steelers didn't even make the playoffs or win thier division. Are they done?

We have a great team. Enjoy them. Seriously.

Umm..... When were you privvy to Welker's medical records? For all we know, Welker could go under the knife tomorrow. Mayo supposably had a really bad MCL tear and was back on the field in three weeks. We have no idea how bad the MCL is going to take. Even so, by most medical expert research, a WR can return to play from an ACL reconstruction and be back close to 100% in as little as seven months. That means Welker could actually fulfill the Patriots estimation that he will be ready for the start of the season.

Yes, with the Pats going 10-6 this year, if they do not have a near perfect offseason, this team will be lucky to have three wins. The way this team is constituted right now the Pats will be lucky to go 0-16 and have a few games that are close. Come on! Again, this team won TEN GAMES this year. People act like this team won six or less games.

As for the free agents the Pats got this year, McKenzie's injury and Jason Taylor playing games with the Pats when Belichick thought he was going to be signed here made Belichick have to make the trade for Burgess. It wasn't like Belichick went into the offseason planning on trading for Burgess three weeks before the start of the season. This year, there are a lot more options for the position.

According to Miguel, if there is a cap, the Pats will be $45 million under the cap (last year even after trading Cassel and a few minor house keeping issues, the Pats were like $10-12 million). If there is no cap, Michael Lombardi has stated the Pats have one of the lowest actual payrolls right now and they are one of the most profitable teams. I fully expect this to be 2003 or 2007 where the Pats are agressive in free agency, not last year where the Pats had very little cap room to make big deals.

That's true, looking from the outside in on teams like the Steelers and Giants you know they will be back in the mix. My worry is that on draft day all we'll see is the Patriots trade back again and again and grab picks for the following season. They'll draft a buch of backups and depth players but NO impact players who can help turn it around. Belichick believes in his way right or wrong. The problem recently is he's been wrong more then he's been right.

Seriously, I swear there must be something in the water or something. Three weeks ago, people were positive about this team and thought the Jets were frauds. Now the Pats should tear the whole thing down and the Jets have already won the 2010 AFC East title. I just don't get it. This team does have needs to be addressed, but a "near perfect free agency"?

I don't have a link to it but I read an article earlier today which has Welker himself saying that his surgery will be delayed a few weeks due to the MCL tear...Brady went through the same delay.

And yes I think they need a near perfect draft and FA pickups - Lets look at the past 2 drafts where only Meriweather and Mayo are worth mentioning.

Picking up only 2 decent players in 2 years in the draft combined with signing rejects from the Raiders,Lions (Paris) and Old geezers like Galloway while letting your best DL and a top notch #3 WR go are the ingredients to get bad and bad really quick, not to mention passing on some top talent in the first round - how can you possibly argue that Belichick has hurt this team with moves the past few years in the offseason?

We laughed 2 years ago on how bad the Dolphins were due to bad decisions and bad drafts...we need a GREAT draft and FA or get ready to see more games like last sunday occur frequently in 2010...It may be just me, but this team needs alot more fine tuning to get back to the level of 2003/ 2004 than some of you think and it starts with the HC making the right decisions like he did for the first 6 years.

Belichick is in firm command of this team and its his moves that will bury or resurrect the team in the coming years and stop fu(king trading for 3 years down the road when Brady nears retirement...winning is for NOW,not when the rest of the core of superstars is gone...Let the future take its course.

Fixed it for you.

Is anyone stating that the Patriots are now forever condemned to sub-five-hundred purgatory? That Brady's best years are behind him and it's now time to rebuild around another quarterback? That the entire league has adapted to Bill Belichick and the game has passed him by?

Not likely!

Not likely, I say! :)

Prisco not dancing on the 2009 Patriots' grave has to be the biggest upset of the season. I don't know what to believe any more!

1 great pass rusher

1 more good WR.

thats all thats needed.

Belichick's moves the past few years have certainly brought up questions of why more than in his first 8 years here

As far as Brady goes I think once he is healthy again and he has a decent OL he can still do damage as he nears his mid 30s

So you are satsified with our secondary, especially the position opposite Bodden? - Wilhite would be cut on most teams by now and it seems that Springs could care less about winning.

Maybe some less than optimistic folks on this board should listen to this interview with Mike Lombardi on today's Dale&Holley.

Sorry. I didn't see the thread. Please ignore.

Lombardi has lots of points as to why the Patriots could be back sooner than expected with all the draft picks and money in an uncapped year, but still I wonder will BB find a way to trade down and waste another season while trading into the future and if not will he make a bad choice like Maroney over Jones-Drew or taking Chad Jackson over Greg Jennings or signing aging veterans who were not good enough to stay with thier previous bad teams? - Making bad decisions in drafts 3 years ago (not including FA pickups in Moss and Welker) is what makes great teams back then mediocre very fast.

Can we trust that Belichick will have a great offseason like he did in 2007?...I sure hope so,another subpar draft could be damaging for the next few years. - While its near impossible to know what a rookie will turn out to be you just hope BB can figure them out right BEFORE taking them or making moves in this draft.
