The only thing shocking about this is McGwire's particular strategy to make the admission in the way that he did.... it may minimize outrage.

Though I still feel insulted with the whole Andro in the Locker routine he attempted

He may have erred with his lame attempt at "steroids didn't help me hit home runs" bs too

Steroids doesn't "help you hit hr's"....taking steroids doesn't all the sudden tell the ball to hit the bat....While you may be stronger you still have to make contact with the ball.....that's like saying if a pitcher takes steroids he should be able to strike out 20 guys a game.....

What a freaking phoney, tears and all..

If Selig had any testicles, he would take away about 200 home runs..

Worst confession ever .... I kind of had no opinion on him before. He wants to get into coaching and move on ... so he talks a bunch of crap ... Mark is now the biggest loser.

From pretty much every hitter who played from 1960 to 2003?

The cuban baseball team were all taking steroids in 1960, and they were definitely in MLB at that point. I'm pretty sure people didn't just forget about them for 40 years.

Can't say I'm suprised. The guy's neck looked like 15 pounds of USDA choice meat.

Steroids don't help you hit home runs at all. They contribute to your recovery to help you train more.

People have this misconception that steroids improve your performance on use. It's far from it. They help you recover faster to train more. The devil is still in putting in the hard yards... you simply put in more on steroids.

Fine with me, cheating bastards or gambling bastards should not be involved in Pro Sports, McGuire made a mockery of the game.. and the only reason he offers this half azzed confession is for a freaking job...

BTW do not give a rats azz about the Cuban Team from 50 years ago, because they did this it makes it ok???

It's amazing that these players seem to think everyone's stupid.

1. Steroids allow players to increase their strength

2. Increased strength drives the ball further

3. Depending on how far a ball is it, it's either an out or a home run.

And yet there probably are some people gullible enough to buy their argument... as if simply hitting a baseball makes it a home run.

Heck - I seem to recall that McGwire's record breaking home run just barely made it out of the park. That's fitting in hindsight. No steroids and that's an out, not a record.

Are you really serious? You haven't noticed that guys who take steroids are a tad bigger than guys who don't?

It's precisely because steroids help torn muscle tissue heal faster that guys can work out more and get bigger and more powerful.

And if you haven't noticed in baseball, balls hit with more power travel further - often becoming home runs.

Balls that aren't hit with more power don't tend to go quite as far, and are usually outs.

THAT'S WHY THEY TOOK STEROIDS!!!!! Of course it doesn't help them put the bat on the ball. As the kids say.. "Duh!" That's got nothing to do with this issue. Heck. Why do you think McGwire was crying when he called Roger Maris' widow to apologize if this didn't help him hit home runs?

(I guess people really are gullible enough to buy that excuse. They must be scratching their heads wonderig what everyone is so upset about.)

I already knew all of that and I am not arguing for the players taking them I was just making a statement that there is still some skill needed to hit the ball....yes steroids will make you hit the ball further but you still have to hit the ball......Relief pitchers are the biggest steroid takers in the MLB and it's so they can repair their bodies faster because they pitch so many times in a season.....Does it make them all throw the ball 100 mph? no.....My argument is that while steroids do give you an unfair advantage you can't just say that's the only reason a player was successful is because they took steroids...

Actually JoeSixPat, seeing as though you know it all, you'd know that steroids, especially anabolic agents increase protein synthesis within the muscle cell, thus helping it to repair faster and stimulating muscle growth which allows you to increase your training load. By training more because you can recover faster, theoretically you should get stronger and more power from your muscles.

Steroids only work when you put in the effort to maximize their effectiveness. They do jack, especially anabolic agents if you don't put in the training.

Again, you're stating the obvious. Everyone knows what steroids do. Muscle cells regenerate quicker and it allows them to get bigger and stronger as a result of their workout routine.

THAT'S THE POINT! There's so many idiots out there who think that "well if they didn't work out they wouldn't do anything!" somehow creates a loophole in how this impacts the sport.

Does that give them any edge over Roger Maris? HELL YES!

They get stronger working out with steroids working out than they would if they worked out without steroids. Hit balls travel further - and what would otherwise be outs are home runs.

Hence - this is why Steroids are banned and using them is cheating.

I guess maybe people DIDN'T know all that before?????

I don't think anyone's particularly concerned with the question of "would Mark McGwire have been a successful baseball player without steroids.

He already was. (In fact that's why most players take them - not to break Roger Maris' record but just to make it to the big leagues.) Though McGwire was MORE successful during his Roid Years.

The lightning rods in this debate are the guys who, without question, had more home runs thanks to steroids thanks to the additional power.

For some reason some people seem to be confusing striking out and getting a hit - with the notion of a hit ball traveling further.

Steroids won't stop a batter from having strike outs - but that's not the point of the issue at all. Steroids will give a player more power to make a hit ball travel further - often making the difference between an OUT in the record books and another HOME RUN!

Actually you'd be surprised at just how many people have no idea or the wrong idea about steroids and how to use them effectively.

Then again, you probably think steroids were banned because they were deemed "cheating" when infact steroids at olympic levels were banned because of health concerns (which cannot be conclusively tied to steroids themselves btw), not their performance enhancing capabilities.

Thanks for noting the other red herring... "the real reason they were banned was because of health concerns."

Yes - they have adverse health impacts - which must obviously mean the decision to ban them has nothing to do with an unfair competitive advantage - all of which somehow makes it more acceptable.

So you actually THINK that if a "safe steroid" were developed competive sports would have no problem with those or other performance enhancing drugs and make them legal again??????

But to your main point, you're correct.

If people actually understood that Steroids gave McGwire and other athletes an unfair competitive advantage and helped them hit more home runs, there wouldn't have to be threads like this.
