2010 wide receivers to start the year

I expect us to sign three free agents in hopes of ending up with two on the roster. Last year, we drafted two, traded for one and drafted one for two roster spots which we ended up filling with Edelman and Galloway.

Edelman is the keeper from the four options in 2009.
And we need to do this all over again in 2010 for the same same position!

Tate is seriously injured for the second time in two years. We have no idea when he will be back. I seriously doubt that he will be back for the beginning of Training Camp. My GUESS is that he will again start the season on the PUP list.

Unfortunately, most of those on the list posted will re-sign with their own teams. This is likely to happen even more this year (especially among the top four teams), given the restrictive free agent rules.

As we get closer to March 5th, we will have the "real" free agent list, after player re-sging with their teams before free agency begins.

Aiken should be our #5 receiver. The #5 receiver is almost always a top STer who is able to play a few plays at wide receiver when needed.

We need to have two additional speed receivers on the roster to start the season.

I completely agree.

Sam I can't Aiken is a #6 AT BEST.

Moss isn't worth half of his $11M cap hit.

Edelman is the only one of this sorry-ass group who deserves to return.

We need 2 vet FAs & 2 rookies in order to rebuild this once-proud position group.

Agreed, though I don't know if I prefer a vet to a rook. Seems like young WRs in the league are faring well of late, and Galloway has left a bad taste in my mouth about the ability old dogs to learn new tricks . . . Add a stud speed receiver to Moss and our slot receiver tandem of WW & WWII, and we're once again an offensive force to be reckoned with.

Also wouldn't mind a big pass-catching TE.

When we looked at WR going into the season we saw it as an area of great depth. Moss and Welker back again with the addition of Galloway to take some heat off Moss deep. Tate healing from a knee injury with big play potential. Edelman a Welker clone who will continue to improve.

Now we look at it after the season, and it's an area with a ton of question marks. Welker's injury is a devastating blow to our WR corps, hopefully he's a quick healer. Moss has one year left, battled through some injuries this year, and isn't getting any younger. Edelman was a great draft pick and is a great slot guy. Aiken isn't a threat at to do anything, and Tate suffered another knee injury.

I really think we need to go after a guy like Marshall or Jackson. 2010 will most likely be Moss' last year with us, and we will need a #1 WR to replace him. Marshall or Jackson both fit that criteria. We will most likely be without Welker to start the season, and need another legitimate threat across from Moss. Moss, Marshall/Jackson, Edelman would be a good top 3 to start, with adding Welker and/or Tate midway through the season a good possibility.

You let Moss walk after 2010 and for 2011 you have Marshall/Jackson, Welker, Edelman. You will know by 2011 if Tate is a keeper or garbage. I still think with those two first round picks you try to grab a good talent like Green, Jones, Floyd, or Baldwin. That would give you Marshall/Jackson and Green/Jones/Floyd/Baldwin opposite him with Welker and Edelman in the slot. If Tate becomes a legit WR threat, then we probably wouldn't make a play for a 1st round WR.

The more likely scenario is probably keep Moss for 2010, sign/draft 1-2 middle of the pack guys, increase Edelman's role, add in Welker and Tate midseason. Then I think we'd let Moss walk after 2010 or bring him back for cheap money if he wants a shot at a ring, and we draft a Green/Jones/Floyd/Baldwin in the first round to give us a 2011 of a slower and older Moss, Welker, Edelman, Green/Jones/Floyd/Baldwin, and hopefully Tate.

I don't like the idea of bringing in 3 WR's and hoping we hit on 2 of them. We've tried the low budget approach at two different positions over the past two years and it's failed miserably both times. In '08, the Patriots signed guys like Fernando Bryant and Jason Webster to fight it out for playing time at CB. Bryant was released before training camp ended and Webster was released, re-signed, and (I believe) released again. In '09 it was the WR position where we brought in two cheap veterans to fight it out for playing time in Greg Lewis and Joey Galloway. We know how that turned out.

If the Patriots are going to run a base 3 WR set, they need FOUR legitimate WR's ala 2007. I agree with mgteich that we need 2 WR's for next year (especially if Tate is out with a 2nd serious knee injury as rumored), but I want guys with a much better chance of success than the type of guys we've brought in to "solve" our problems the past two years.

Also, the comment in this thread about Randy Moss not being worth half his salary is laughable and makes PatsFans.com's messageboards look really bad.

For all you guys saying we need another "deep threat" WR can you tell me why???? How many championships have the pats won with even 1 deep threat? Brady is not a long ball QB anymore sorry. He was garbage this season with the long ball. We need to get back to the old formula. Small fast route runners with good hands and knows how to get to the first down marker. We need to dink and dunk so Brady can do his 3 step drop and fire. Some may disagree but i always said why change something when it works.

Galloway was a bit of a bust, but as awful as he was at times, he really didn't get much of a chance. I really thought he would have been better in the second half of the season, and compared to Aiken's output, he would have been a better option. Aiken's a great STer and 5th receiver at best; Galloway at his worst would have been an adequate #4, or potentially rising to a great #3.

There was some talk of Branch being cut earlier in the season, but it was highly unlikely because of the cap hit. With an uncapped year, he could be available. Not suggesting he be a #2 receiver, but he could definitely fill a #4 role, is comfortable with TB, and could be signed for a smaller salary. He'd be a small gamble that could pay off big, like TBC was this off-season.

But we definitely need to draft a few guys or sign a few guys. Golden Tate probably won't be available, but at least he's played in Weis' system. Marshall would bring a lot of drama; might as well sign T.O. while we're at it and give them a reality show together. Some would argue we brought Moss in, but Moss was a guy who loved to play and loved to win. I don't see Marshall as that type of receiver. He's more of a T.O. type, who is happy so long as he gets his.

The FA I'd love to sign would be Miles Austin. He's not just a deep threat, he gets a lot of YAC, pretty physical for a receiver and a pretty fair blocker as well. Not gonna happen though.

Any info on which that assessment is based? I haven't heard anything about surgery. Haven't even heard anything definitive on which knee was injured (I haven't seen a replay of the kick return to see which knee he is favoring).

If he strained his MCL in the opposite knee from his previous ACL surgery, would you have the same perspective? When the 2010 season kicks off, Tate will be the ripe old age of......22. Assuming he didn't tear the same ACL, that college injury will have had nearly 2 years of recovery time.
