Re: Edelman: first rookie in 14 years to . . .

maybe Butler should be added.

But I agree, the list is short.
my bad... faulk too. But that's about it.

Re: Edelman: first rookie in 14 years to . . .

I wish people would stop calling Edelman our backup slot receiver. It's seriously uneducated. Oh, but because he's white and short, he must be Wes Welker 2...

He's got great vertical speed--he already makes more plays downfield than Welker does. He also has enormous upside, since this is his first year playing WR. If the Patriots limit him to just playing the slot, they're misusing his talent.

The guy definitely has the skillset to play on the outside, as well. He might not be a Donte Stallworth deep threat, but he'll be able to run intermediate routes that Welker doesn't.

Re: Edelman: first rookie in 14 years to . . .

You can believe that Edelman can do more than Welker if you wish. It is NOT an insult to Welker for him to be called mini-Welker or Welker 2. Until his injury, Welker was the best slot reciever in football.

I think it is misguided to depend on Edelman as the deep threat opposite Moss. He does NOT have the needed speed or skillset. We need to sign 3 receivers to compete for that role.

Of course Edleman has an enormous upside. He's never played wide receiver! I suppose we could convert him to a downfield receiver where he would likely fail or we could just keep in his current position of slot receiver.

With Welker injured and not likely to be back until October, Edelman is our STARTING slot receiver, pretty good for a 7th round quarterback who never played wide receiver.

Somehow, I don't think Edelman should or would be insulted to be called a slot receiver who plays much like a younger version of Wes Welker.

Edelmensch was very good today. That 4th down play was Sanders-esque.

I think TheComeback had a more Gaffney-like role (10-15 yard routes before the catch) in mind.

Re: Edelman: first rookie in 14 years to . . .

I get it. At the moment, the team needs someone to replace Welker for at least half the season. That role is slot receiver and Welker should play that role. We need someone else to be a #2 receiver, the long distance threat opposite Moss, the #1, the big TD threat. Both Moss and this new receiver should also be able to go over the middle, especially on intermediate routes. Edeleman as the #3 or slot receiver would have 5-10 catches a game.

We also need a #4 receiver as a change of pace, in spread formations (4 and 5 wides) and in case of injury. Edelman is the #4 when Welker comes back.

BOTTOM LINE
We need at least one receiver. Two or even three free agent receivers competing for two rosters spots with Stanback on the starting 53 would seem to be the ideal situation.

I agree with your bottom line that we need atleast one WR, possibly 2. I think Edelman proved today that he can be the slot receiver until Welker comes back, but we still need that quality 3rd and 4th WR. I dont think Aiken is any of those guys, Brandon Tate could be, but there is no guarantee with him either.

Re: Edelman: first rookie in 14 years to . . .

I was proud of the kid. That 4th down play was the grittiest play I've seen all year.

I would be surprised to see Tate back.

Then we definitely need to find 2 WR's out there. We can have those 2 and Tate compete for 2 roster spots in training camp.

I agree that we need 3 to compete for the two roster spots. I doubt very much if Tate will be in Training Camp. we will need to bring in three free agent receivers.

Speaking of Tate:

Was it the same knee he injured in college?

Did he have surgery on his injury this year?

First he tore both his ACL and MCL during college, and then when he was activated around, week 7?(I may be wrong)He suffer another knee injury, and placed on IR.

We don't know exactly how severe an injury he had this time around.

bravo Julian !

Re: Edelman: first rookie in 14 years to . . .

Edleman showed up and played with the passion and heart you want to see. I hope Tate is healthy and can be part of the mis. Was Moss playing hurt? I believe he was very banged up. A couple of WR vets is a must to provide some sort of threat.

We also need a couple of RB'a and a replacement for NEAL to get the running game going (Assuming Sea Bass will be at RT.

Lots of focus on receivers, but it's the OL that should be an even higher priority. With a better OL, we have a better running game (key), and Brady gets more time, doesn't get ripped to shreds by Ray Lewis.

No matter how good your reciever corp is, if you only get 3 milliseconds to throw the ball, you ain't gonna win.

Yeah, I agree - I dont think Welker would have made that much difference yesterday, Brady was off, the OL was awful, we had no running game (what happend to Taylor and Morris?) and the playcalling was abysmal as usual

In many ways 2007 was a curse

Edelman's going to make a fantastic late-round fantasy football pickup next season.

Heh. I've already seen at least one website suggest picking him up in round 5. :)
