Simmons generally sucks. I really don't think he knows much about football either. He knows the happenings in the various leagues, the final scores, and the personalities, but he can't really analyze. I doubt he knows what 3-technique means....most of these writers are generally clueless about anything more than the basics.

I just finished his Red Sox book, it was refreshing to read his old columns back when he actually cared about Boston sports. In his defense he really didn't claim to be an expert, his angle was as an everyman, and it worked back when he was more connected with the city he was writing about.

Agreed. The things that most bug me about him are:

1. He should stick to the NBA because he knows **** all about the NFL.

2. He tries to portray himself as the typical Boston guy. I mean yes, he is an ******* so that is similar, but New Englanders are different kid of *******s than him.

He writes in an entertaining way, but it's all shallow and much less witty than a few years ago.

So Bill Simmons and Bob Costas... There you go.

His column in that book after the Pats won SB36 was superb. Back then he could capture what it meant to be a local fan, before he became Jimmy Kimmel's lapdog and put a reference about L.A.'s superior weather and SB42 in every column.

Exactly. Plus he's very negative now, the homerism that I enjoyed in his earlier writing is gone.

No, not really. But I'd rather target my frustration on him (for the other reasons I mentioned) rather than the Patriots. My wife is out of town, otherwise I'd target her.

To put the Saints (over the Bucs) in a 3 team parlay @ -1000 was one of the dumbest bets of all-time. Saints struggled to beat the Bucs in the first game. From that point the Saints form curve was going down, the Bucs curve was going up, and the game was close to meaningless for the Saints. The value was clearly to bet the spread or the Bucs outright.

Or last year, when he adviced to bet against FB Russell to score a TD in the SuperBowl, when Russell had just punched one in against the Chargers in the Divisional Play-offs. So you got like -1500 that the Steelers would never have 1st and goal inside the 2 and if they did that the Cards would stop Russell. Plan of a genius.

I enjoyed his podcasts and used to listen to them daily on my lunch break. Unfortunately I recently realized that I do think that he's more full of himself than a guy who's interested in entertaining his readers. Once your ego gets in the way of everything else I lose interest and my opinion changes. That's why I'm not really as big of a fan as I used to be - and I do echo Patjew's sentiments...(although my wife is sitting next to me and I'd get in a lot of trouble if I targeted my frustrations toward her )

He was ground breaking way back in his AOL Digital City days. At his best he was a guy who captured Boston spots fans attitudes in an offbeat amusing way that the whole country read it even if they could care less about the Celtics/Sox/Pats. His move to LA killed that angle. His Boston stuff is out of touch now. His national knowledge is nil.

He is a guy who I think pretty clearly doesn't like what he is doing and is mailing it in - has been for a couple years. Even when he has an interesting idea he can't pull it off - like last week's column on how the NFL has changed which as an idea has potential but was just an awful all over the place column.

He's become the typical burnt out on sports sportswriter who churns out formula columns even if his formula is different than the norm. Its ironic when you consider it was people's frustration with formula sports coverage which made him so popular.
