I think its a pretty accurate assessment. The question will be how the team will react. Can that past glory be attained again? Can they bring in the types of players that will re-establish the "Patriots way"? We'll see. starts with the FA period and the draft.

Damn, I hate it when I agree with Shaughnessy, but there's little he says that's not true (OK, maybe a couplof points of emphasis).

Belichick has had five swipes at the golden ring, watched his team blow one of them (in Indy in 2006) and saw another go by in legendary fashion (2007), for five Conference Championship Games, four SB's and three rings).

Only Tom Landry (12 Conference Championship Games and five SB's) and Don Shula (7 CCG's and five SB's) had more final goes at the biggest prize, but each ended up with only two rings. Chuck Noll went to 7 CCG's and, like Belichick, to four SB's, winning all four. (Lest I be corrected, Bud Grant and Marv Levy each went to five CCG's and four SB's but always came up empty in the big game.)

Not for nothing is the prize of a Super Bowl Championship the greatest treasure in US sports: a series of three or four, one game, sudden death matches when everything is on the line when only the best and/or the most fortunate survives to the end.

Belichick's already in the pantheon with the best of them, none of whom had to do what they did in the midst of the same intense 24/7 media attention and blogosphere.

This year was much like 2005. After that year, AFC championship appearance followed by a Super Bowl appearance.

It was a bad game, plain and simple. It happens. I don't expect the Boston media to address this with any objectivity as they happily jump into a refrain of "Ding, Dong. The witch is dead." every time this team hits a sour note. Franky, the sooner the Internet drives the Boston media into the ground, the happier I'll be.

It's just a sad time of year ... seems just yesterday we were excited that it was training camp time. Deep down ... we knew we had problems but we also knew we had brady and Moss and Welker and we could get hot also.

Many of us looked at this year as a transition year ... and that it was.

We have some good pieces ... but not enough of them especially at linebacker where we were always stocked to the gills. We went to a 4-3 defense with good reason ... and we knew this in September.

Some of Shaughnessy's piece rings true.

However, this loss reminds me a bit of the 2005 Denver playoff loss. That was a team in transition, too, and a Super Bowl contender the next two years.

I look back at the Patriots' 2000's with a lot of thankfulness, and look forward with optimism... keeping in mind... it's only football.

The Patriots are victims of their own undoing. Unproductive draft picks after unproductive draft picks have hurt the team in some way. At some point, you must retool or replenish your talent pool over time. But there must be a certain level of success from these drafts. If not, this is what will happen at some point. You no longer are a great team, you're an above average team or you just miss that mediocre tag.

I was down on the defense from the start... The lack of a consistent pass rush will do that to you. Yes, I saw it as that big of a glaring weakness. Conversely, I figured the offense would come around. But I didn't suspect that the offensive line was this weak. I guess it got progressively worst over the regular season and I just didn't notice. But the thing that really bothers me is the consistent failures of New England's off-season signings and trades. Bodden and Banta-Cain were motived being in contract years, and McGowan did well but was eventually benched.

It's so cliche to believe that as long as the team has Belichick and Brady, we're alright. Well, I'm beginning to see how tired that sounds. Because the Patriots need to hire a new director of player personnel, a head scout and a general manager. Or is Belichick wearing all of these hats? This is the root of one problem. For instance, Belichick admitted that a mistake was made in drafting Bo Ruud over Guyton. Geez Louise.

BB: That's a good question. We blew it, too. We took a linebacker ahead of him. We talked about him and [Bo] Ruud and which one to take and obviously we drafted the wrong one, too. To me it was a miracle that we even signed him. That was his first question to me, ‘Why didn't you draft me?' And he was right. I don't know, that's a good question.
