Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Of course I would be upset"

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

The second we traded Seymour, our leverage with Wilfork went way down. One of many questionable calls by the FO this past offseason.

One of your questionable calls by the FO, pal this goes back to Dion Branch. THE OWNERS ARE CHEAP THEY ARE TRYING TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE CHEAP AND IT HAS NOW CAUGHT UP TO THEM. If I hear the word value one more time I'm going to puke.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

The guy is one of the top 3 in the NFL at his position - his salary should reflect that.
I'm not sure I agree as he's a non factor on passing downs. Again, I love Vince but he's mostly a guy who contributes on run downs.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

If he takes $8M a year with a big signing bonus then he'll stay I expect. If he wants $14M he won't. I love Vince but we can't say "we have to sign him" without knowing what he'll accept.

Think of the horror if your wife said "we have to have this house" without knowing the cost

Funny you should mention that... Do you have Matt Estrella hanging around my house or something?

LMAO. No but I'm married - so I just know ;)

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

We already need a long term replacement for Seymour, a couple of outside linebackers, some mauler type offensive linemen, and playmakers on both sides of the ball. We have enough problems as it is without having to find a replacement nose tackle. I just wonder if Vince is going to price himself out of the market. He's going to be disappointed because theres no way we don't franchise him. You don't just let a pro bowl lineman walk out of here for nothing.

Wecome to the forum :)

The tough part is if you really look at it, if you're going to let him walk, you have to decide what you're going to do to replace him. As it stands right now they've already seen what life would be like when he was out (the Buffalo game - which the Bills coaching staff more or less blew the game for Buffalo) and there is no viable option. We're good with draft choices, what they need is experience at this point.

My feeling is that Belichick has to be reaching a point where he knows he's not going to do this for another decade, and I'm sure he knows he's got probably 5 or so good years left in Brady. So needless to say I'm sure he wants to put together at least a few more seasons where they have a real shot so he can get them back to where they have the blend of players they had in '01, '03, '04, etc. Another draft pick means developing yet another player, and I'm sure Belichick would love to get back to the days where he could come up with the type of schemes that require smart experienced veterans to implement. People complained about that this season, but don't realize that you need guys who can implement what you're trying to do, and he did the best he could with what they had. We saw tremendous growth in other areas (the secondary), and I'm sure he'd rather build on that than have to start over again up front. Good run-stopping d-linemen are tough to find, and as we've seen Wilfork has excelled in that role.

I don't think you let him walk at all without a real answer, and I really think if they can find a way to make it happen they will.

if anybody deserves a long term deal its vince wilfork. this guy must be signed.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

Remember, the sides talked in the offseason and you saw the result.

I think we have two possibilities :

1) Franchise and trade for something like a #1 (kind of like Branch though he left a year earlier than being Franchised).

2) Franchised and doesn't hold out with the promise of not being Franchised again (like Samuel).

We won't let him walk this offseason and I think he's looking for too much money to sign.

Your choice, 1 or 2.

The leverage didn't go away. The franchise tag is a great leverage tool. The fact that there might not be a 2011 season and playing under the franchise tag in 2010 and being unemployed in 2011 and hitting 30 in 2012 is another big leverage tool.

Short term the Seymour trade was bad, but long term it was a great deal. In fact, Seymour could even be a Patriot come 2010 since the Raiders need to consider between franchising Seymour or Kirk Morrison and Morrison is the better move.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

Of course Wilfork will not be happy if he gets franchised. What player is happy about it? The Pats hold the leverage here if they franchise him if there is no new CBA. Without a long term deal and a work stoppage in 2011, Wilfork may never cash in.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

Vince, prepare to be upset.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

I like the guy and I hope he stays but today is not the day to ask for a raise.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

Of course, if that is the attitude of the patriots then he will be gone. The patriots certainly get a 1st after a sign and trade, with Wilfork's bringing forth an acceptable deal to the patriots.

As always, it depends what he's willing to take. Whatever, as long as he either plays or gets traded for no less than a #1 pick it's OK.

Not his fault. I am sure that is all the reporters asked him about.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

Let's see if the Krafts get out a crowbar and open up their dusty wallets. I'm not holding my breath. Not to mention, if Vince thinks he's on par with Haynesworth, he's smoking crack.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

I hope he gets one from the Patriots

Team leader 13 tackles today ... and he's a great veteran presence ... I hope he gets one also.

I don't see any point in franchising him. Just give him a multi-year deal now, you clearly need him here and waiting another year to extend him will just raise the salary as the market seems to go up every year. Same with Mankins, this is already a flawed team as it is it's no sense in letting 2 of our best young linemen walk whether it be this year or next.

Re: Wilfork after game on possibly being franchised: "Up course I would be upset"

This needs to be said:
I would rather pay Wilfork $10M a year than pay Moss $10M a year.
Since 2010 is a no-cap year, I would sign Wilfork and presume that I was not going to have a $10M side receiver in 2011. My #2 player in cap money would be Wilfork.

Note that I am NOT suggesting cutting Moss, just not extending him for $10M a year.

If we want to be division winners next year or the year after, then I suggest that we spend some resources on the defense. What the offense needs is an OC (check the patriot site, we don't have one; but we knew that).

Contract negotiations are a two way street. The Pats might offer him a long term, generous offer and Wilfork may want more. He may have unrealistic expectations. There is only so much the Pats can do in that case.

I am sure the Pats will open their wallet for the guy like they did with Seymour, Brady, and Moss. All those guys got top dollar although Brady took slightly less than he could have, but both Seymour and Moss became the highest paid players at their position on a per year basis. The thing is even if the Pats want to give Wilfork a market deal, Wilfork may want to set the market with a much higher salary.

Something I've wondered for a while now, if 2010 is uncapped, can a team structure a contract like this?

2010 - $18 million
2011 - $5 million
2012 - $6 million
2013 - $7 million

Same as a 4 year $36 million contract, but very cap friendly for the future (assuming there is no work stoppage).
