The NFL rules for the 8 final teams regarding FA is extremely restrictive. And could put those 8 teams at a competitive disadvantages for several years.

It was a very long shot we were going to win it all, for the long term it is better to lose this week than next week in SD.

I think these "rules" are flawed anyway as good team with lots of money will find loopholes like teams did with the salary cap. With that said, there are no free agents worth signing next year besides Peppers and the Pats own free agents. It will be a boring off season for all teams.

As sad as it is to think about you are right. If you didn't think this team could win the Super Bowl then a loss this week was the best thing for the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Kraft just has to open his checkbook now.

I agree. Resign Vince and Ghost
Time to let some others go as well.

I would love to see the end of Thomas and Maroney in a patriot uni.

Sorry but that is just not the case.
Brandon Marshall
Vincent Jackson
Karlos Dansby
Shawn Merriman
Julius Peppers
Aaron Kampman
Dunta Robinson
Richard Marshall

They all sound good to me.

Robinson, Dansby and Peppers will be franchised, Kampman doesn't like playing in a 3-4, and the rest are restricted. Nice try though.

This coming from the same guy that Chad Jackson was going to impact. Just because they are restricted doesn't mean we will not go after them. and u r making an assumption those three will be franchised.

Dansby and Peppers will both need to be franchised for a huge amount of money since they are repeated franchised players. Peppers' franchise tag number is likely going to be about $21-22 million. Even with no cap, that is a lot of money for one year for one player.

Today's game absolutely sucked, obviously, but to be completely honest, this was one of the first things that crossed my mind afterwards. Losing in the playoffs is obviously disappointing, but to be fair, this team would have had a LOT of trouble in San Diego (I think most of us believed that even prior to today's monstrosity).

I haven't earnestly studied the FA list yet, but the "final eight" rules does really seem to handcuff those teams. A small silver lining, sure, but one nonetheless...

BTW, even if there is a cap, the Pats will have $45-50 million of cap space after they cut Thomas. According to Miguel, the Pats are $45.2 million under the estimated cap if there is one next year.

He was actually pretty good when the Pats threw to him until the Pats coaching staff made him go tackle on special teams after coming off of a hamstring injury. Oh yeah, didn't they trade 2 drafts picks to get him? Not very smart when the Pats were so thin at receiver. That ACL tear single handily ruined his career.

I was just listing the obvious and correcting that person that assumed those players are available. The way the Pats have drafted in the past 5 years, I'd trade those picks for most of the restricted free agents in 2010. But then again, teams will have no problem tendering players first round grades. So it's not as easy as you think.

What on earth makes you think this is a 3-4 team? This team with Kampman-Wilfork-Wright(other?)-Warren would look a lot better. At this point they do not have four capable LB.

We will know a couple of months from now what the Patriots
plan to do. This team has too many holes to fill thru the draft
alone.

Let's see if they franchise Wilfork and re-sign any key players.

I don't make the rules. We all know BB wants to run a 3-4. That's why I mentioned that.

"The so-called "final 8" rule goes into effect. Basically, a team that reaches the second round of the playoffs -- that includes the Colts -- would be allowed to sign only as many free agents as it loses. If the Colts lose Brackett and Stover, they would be limited to two free-agent acquisitions."

Brandon Marshall and Vincent Jackson can be tagged in an uncapped 2010. So take those guys out of the conversation.

I'm beginning to think that draft picks are going to be gold in an uncapped future, but a lock out in 2011 isn't going to help anyone.
