How many of those previous drafts you reference had a rookie salary cap?

If my memory of the timing of CBA implementation is correct, every Patriots draft under Belchick has had a rookie salary cap. It's simply called something else and is a group cap rather than an individual one.

2011 is shaping up to be an excellent draft. Some prospects include (juniors with an *):

QB Jake Locker, Washington
QB Ryan Mallet, Arkansas
RB Ingram*, Alabama
WR Julio Jones*, Alabama
WR AJ Green*, Georgia
WR Michael Floyd*, Notre Dame
WR Jonathan Baldwin*, Pittsburgh
WR DeAndre Brown*, Southern Mississippi
TE Kyle Rudolph, Notre Dame
OT Matt Reynolds, BYU
OT Clint Boling, Georgia
DE/DT Cameron Heyward, Ohio St.
DE/DT Allen Bailey, Miami
DT Marvin Austin, North Carolina
DE (?OLB) Richard Quinn*, North Carolina
DE Da'Quan Bowers*, Clemson
DE Adrian Clayborn, Iowa
LB Bruce Carter, North Carolina
LB Travis Lewis, Oklahaoma
CB Patrick Peterson*, LSU
CB Janoris Jenkins*, Florida

And that's not including some guys who are still undecided about 2010, such as DE's Derrick Morgan, Carlos Dunlap and Greg Romeus and S Earl Thomas.

How about QB Andrew Luck - Stanford?

The next Brady.

If he comes out next year. He'll be a red shirt sophomore in 2011, so he'll be draft eligible, but most often they don't come out (Sam Bradford, Ryan Mallett).

Here's a dream fantasy for you. Get the 1st pick in 2011 from the Raiders. Trade it for a 2011 top 10 pick and a 2012 1st for some team who desperately wants Jake Locker, then grab CB Patrick Peterson. Use the extra 2012 pick to trade up for Andrew Luck if we're looking for a true successor to TB by then.

.... wow. Russell is historically bad. I still maintain that the Raiders would be a good, perhaps even playoff team if they could simply field a slightly-above-average QB (say, Jeff Garcia). If they're actually going to fire another coach and stick with Russell at QB, then that's so atrocious that I could almost get on board with the Seymour trade just for that. We're going to be picking in the top 5 in 2011 if they stick with Russell.

That's a good prediction. Even journeyman Gradkowski was winning games for them. You think Russell would want to start working on improving himself but instead he's skipped the final meeting to go to Vegas. Next year he'll be my favorite player on the Raiders.

More good news! The Raiders 2010 list of opponents. It is a hard schedule as I count at least 10 games were Raiders will be big underdogs. The only games I can see them as favorites are vs. St. Louis, Seattle and maybe KC.

Raiders will face all four teams from the AFC South and NFC West, plus a team from the AFC East and AFC North.

Raiders 2010 Regular Season Opponents
Home / Away
Indianapolis :D Pittsburgh
Houston :D Tennessee
Miami :) Jacksonville
St. Louis :( Arizona
Seattle :( San Francisco
Denver :) Denver
Kansas City  Kansas City
San Diego :) San Diego

It was huge, HUGE, that they finished 3rd. That, alone, got them Miami and Pittsburgh instead of Buffalo and Cleveland who they'd have had if they finished 4th.

that's not necessarily good news. if the raiders hire anyone with an ounce of competence, it may unleash some of the talent that Russell has. With Cable we are guaranteed the top 10 pick.
Disagree strongly. Cable (with Jamokus Russell) has had the Raiders playing well, beating some signigicant teams.

Russell is a bust. He is another Rohan Davey. Great at LSU against simple defenses but who cannot play at an NFL level.

Besides, name one decent coach who is willing to coach for Al Davis. Anybody who thinks they might get a job elsewhere will stay away from teh Raiders as long as Davis is running the show.

What difference does it make if it is a top 5 or a top 10 pick. BB will just trade down to the middle of the first round, for picks in the next draft.

Some here will call you negative, but you are exactly right. I keep getting excited about these draft picks, but BB never cashes on them,
BB had a #13 pick a few years ago and traded UP in the draft.

Also, as someone already mentioned, BB has had 2 top ten picks, and he used both in the top ten. I would hardly call drafting Seymour and Mayo not cashing in.

Further, if you were excited about the last top ten pick, why are you opposed to traded out a year. That top ten pick came from a #28 pick the year before.

Firing Cable might not be a good thing for us. If they hire an HC that can take advantage of the Raiders' defensive talents, then I don't see how they can't improve on their record. They've got some good defensive players over there and in the right system, they can minimize Russell's mistakes and let their defense and a running game win some games for them.

But perhaps you've forgotten that out of three top-15 picks BB has had with the Pats, he's used all three.

Yeah, he traded down three spots in one case and one spot in another case -- so what?

If JaMarcus Russell is the QB next season, they will have a worse record. Remember, Gradkowski won them a good few games this year, and Russell has shown no indication that he can do the same.

If we learned anything this year, I think it's that great QBs make great teams and terrible QBs make terrible teams. The Colts are unremarkable without Manning, and they almost went undefeated. The Panthers were a good team as soon as they got a JAG in there, but they stuck with Delhomme long enough for him to torpedo their season. Same with Russell and the Raiders- until they go find at least a JAG, they're going nowhere but down.

Cable had already correctly identified Russell as the weak link on the team and sought to bench him or find reasons for him not to play, as much as possible. Both Gradowski and Frye made the games competitive. Indeed, the game vs. the Ravens was quite competitive until Russell came into the game and turned the ball over twice. The man just doesn't know how to call the right protection. Balt went to disguise man over with fake zone, and he kept biting on it.

Compare:
J. Frye in 1st half: 18 for 25 for 180 yards, 1 TD, 0 turnovers.
Russell in 2nd half: 9 for 14, 102 yards, 1 interception, 1 fumble.

3rd down eff. took a nose-dive.

Raiders schedule besides their division in 2010

Home JAGS ,Tenn., 49ERS ,Seahawks ,AFC EAST BUFFALO?

Away Houston,Indy,Cards,Rams,AFC North Lions?

They could win 5/6 games as they play the Chiefs twice as well.
Thast should be 6-10 range.

thankfully instead of buffalo and detriot they get miami and steelers. Tough schedule for any team. Besides KC and the Rams I can't see them beating anyone else. 3 wins maybe?

When will those poor Raiders ever find a coach that believes in their fat lazy qb?

Maybe they get beat the Squeelers again. That made my whole year:)
