BB calls Burgess best 3-4 OLB he's had; anonymous players don't buy it per Herald

Mayock spotlighted Burgess briefly this week on Playbook as part of an example of how none of the Patriots pass rushers are any kind of threat. That's why we now have the five and dime, only way they can get pressure is to hope the o-line gets confused.

Granted Burgess has been playing his best football the last couple games, if he continues this in the playoffs he could really be a factor. But anyone who saw him get sealed off and lose the edge against Houston knows his role should be limited solely to passing situations.

Derrick Burgess the man! Huh? - BostonHerald.com

This was talked about a little bit Wednesday on PFW in Progress. Suprised we haven't heard about it here yet...

Doesn't seem like BB is being completely truthful though. Maybe he's trying to talk up Burgess' play so he'll be signed on the FA market and the Pats can sign a FA, per the final eight rule.

More crapola news posted in the forum. I think some guys post and get a cut of the hit money.

If there's a transcript of BB's words, could someone please post a link? I'd rather not just read a bunch of people shooting the messenger and ignoring the message when the mental health of the team's head coach just might be in question here.

Hmm, another questionable article from that rag the Herald. I didn't even bother to go to the link. That newspaper is dead to me and should be dead to all patsfans after the crap they pulled. I believe NOTHING they write. I don't care who their sources are.

I know this Ron guy tries to be different, but what really is his aim for this article? Stir trouble within the team? I mean this is really mean spirited.
Get him out of town period the same way you got the fat one who wanted to ruin the super bowl out

It's not obvious to you that Borges took those comments in the worst possible frame he could find?

BB's comments could be interpreted to mean that Burgess is better than Banta-Cain and Adalius when it comes to giving the team a balance between rushing and stopping the run.

No need to ask about Willie McGinest or Seymour or anyone else.

Heck, BB even used the words "probably" as though it's not at all certain that Burgess is more balanced than Banta-Cain or Thomas.

Hmmm... somewhere between "Belichick is insane" and "Borges is making things up" lay the truth I think.

I prefer not to make silly snap judgments like "Borges took those comments in the worst possible frame he could find" if I can find the actual text instead.

If the quotes are accurate at all, are these current defensive linemen, or is Borges digging through the dumpster of linemen traded/released who are anonymous because they might find a roster spot in the future? The reference to "defensive lineman," not former or current, rather than teammate, while commenting on the linebacker, not line, position, obviously invites the reader to assume as much, but it sounds evasive as Borges actually has writing skills, he just uses those skills to write garbage.

I find it hard to believe Borges has reestablished his internal network post-Bledsoe, so this sounds a bit out there even for him.

Exactly.

Derrick really plays consistently on everything and he’s done an excellent job in the running game for us, probably as good as we’ve had as a run player and a pass rusher.

I'd still disagree with the the above statement if he meant "as good as we've had this year", but I see nowhere where BB says Burgess is the best he's ever had.

I don't see what the big deal is. Burgess probably has the most physical talent of the current patriots OLBs and Adalius Thomas is DEAD as far as BB is concerned. Like it or not TBC and Burgess are probably the best pass rushing options in 2009.

Nothing wrong with BB supporting one of his players and trying to motivate him to live up to the words of praise. We're going to need Burgess to continue to step up if the Pats want to make noise in the playoffs. Good psychological move by BB imo. He has been known to do things like this in the past.

OK, found it:

Q: How has Derrick Burgess been coming along?

BB: Derrick has done a good job for us all year. He really has. He's been productive both in the passing game and in the running game. I think overall his run play has been good. He's a very consistent player. There are some players that rush the passer and they kind of rush the passer on every play and that's great on the passes, but then sometimes that can hurt you in the running game. Derrick really plays consistently on everything and he's done an excellent job in the running game for us – probably as good as we've had as a run player and a pass rusher. When they run the ball, he does a good job. When they throw the ball, he's competitive on the pass rush. I think sometimes guys lean a little more towards one than the other, but I'd say overall his play has been consistent on a down-after-down basis at a position that everybody kind of focuses on the passing part of it. But he's been in there on a lot of running plays and he's done a good job on the draws, the screens, the sub runs. He's made a number of plays for us on that. I think he's had – right from the beginning, going all the way back to the Buffalo game – he's had a good, solid year.

Q: Is it fair to say you got what you wanted out of him?

BB: He's definitely what we needed as an edge player. He's given us that. He's done a good job for us. It's different than Tully [Banta-Cain], but both Tully and Derrick have given us very good play on the perimeter of the defense.

Q: As an older player, at any point earlier in the year, did you think about limiting his snaps?

BB: I think we felt that he could play every down because he's done that throughout his career and he did it last year in Oakland. As you know, in games this year, there were some games where he has played almost every down, like last week, like the first Buffalo game. And then there were other games that his plays were less than that. And of course, then that flips for other players. Other players play more while … You can only have 11 in there at a time. I think he can do it. I think it just comes down to game planning, matchups and sometimes how the game unfolds. But I think he's definitely capable of doing that. I don't know if would really consider him an older player. He's no rookie, I'm not saying that, but I think this guy has got some football left.

All Things Bill Belichick: 06-Jan-2010 Press Conference Transcript

From reading that, I'd agree with Sicilian's earlier comment.

The word "best" wasn't even used once in that entire transcript.

BB is clearly talking about this years team he doesn't talk about historical roles unless a player is retiring.

Nothing exists during the season unless the active players on the roster and the next game.

Belichick said:
probably as good as we've had as a run player and a pass rusher
Bill's quote above could have been intended either this way :

probably as good as we've had, since I've been here, as a run player and a pass rusher

or this way :

probably as good as we've had, this year, as a run player and a pass rusher

This first definitely sounds stupid. The second more reasonable, though debatable.

Wow.

That transcript makes the comments seem much more innocuous than Borges makes it sound.

I suppose I shouldn't really be surprised.

I don't this it is a snap judgment.

To me, it is a considered judgment, as in, "Borges in the past has framed quotes to put BB in the worst possible light, and now we have him quoting BB in a way that none of us expected BB to speak, so I am guessing that this is more of the same old stuff Borges has been known for."

Why is that silly?

Amen to that, I am not surprised at all.

Wow, Borges so thoroughly mangled Belichick's words that it should be a fireable offense. Absolutely ridiculous.
