Derrick Burgess the man! Huh? - BostonHerald.com

This was talked about a little bit Wednesday on PFW in Progress. Suprised we haven't heard about it here yet...

Doesn't seem like BB is being completely truthful though. Maybe he's trying to talk up Burgess' play so he'll be signed on the FA market and the Pats can sign a FA, per the final eight rule.

Yeah Burgess is waaaaay better than Willie McGinest was.

Or maybe he is trying to motivate him... so far not all that impressed, but last week seemed a bit better..

Lawrence Taylor must be laughing.

Edit: Nevermind, seems like he meant on the Pats roster, not that he's ever had. Still BS, though. Vrabal??

Right. And I'm the second coming of Christ

:rolleyes:Well if he said it, it must be true!

In fairness to Burgess, Borges does point out that half his tackles and 60% of his sacks came in the last month. He is get traded in preseason and he sat out of the Raiders' offseason, training camp, and preseason. I figured he had a better feel of the system coming in, but maybe not.

It may have taken Burgess 2/3 of the season to get up to speed and what we have seen over the last month (which has been pretty good, not great, but pretty good) is the real Burgess. It might mean he will step up in the playoffs and if the Pats decide to resign him.

I think Belichick spoke in hyperbole when saying he is one of the best run defenders and pass rushers he has had, but maybe he sees something many of us don't. Especially the Burgess haters who at this point wouldn't give him credit even if he had 9 sacks in a game.

The story itself, I don't care about. The annonymous reactions are interesting and suggest there's some guys who aren't buying what Belichick is selling and probably need to move out.

This makes no sense to me :

"Another defensive lineman bore a look of incredulity before saying, “That explains Chad Jackson.”"

Yes, we blew the pick. BAD. But Jackson was shown the door very quickly for a 2nd round pick (especially one who spent a good chunk of time hurt) so Belichick's defending of a guy he brought in (Burgess) is the exact opposite of how things went for Jackson.

Note the name of the reporter (and that he doesn't know the difference between "appraised" and "apprised" -- there's professionalism for you, Ronnie!)

Yeah, I thought that was just me, but what the hell does that mean?

I was reading this thread with interest until I realized who wrote the article.

I think Borges got on the phone to Brandon Mitchell, who was trying to point out that Belichick is an OK talent evaluator, but he's not nearly as good as Bobby Grier.

Heck, BB isn't even as good as Pam Grier.

In other news, Derrick Burgess is reporting that Bill Belichick calls Ron Borges the best writer to ever cover the Patriots. :p

Please tell me that Belichick hasn't fallen so far that those quotes are accurate in both word and meaning.

Borges attributes the comments to defensive lineman. That's probably a little too close for comfort. The rookies (Pryor, Brace, Richard) don't know Chad Jackson from Andrew Jackson.

That leaves Wilfork, Warren, Green and Wright. Not a big crowd to hide out in, especially since comments are attributred to two DLs.

I've said before that Borges is a magnet for this sort of thing because players know that he will be sympathetic to their concerns and that he is eager to stir the pot however he can with respect to BB.

Noting that the comments were DLs is right on the edge of outing his sources. I wonder why he felt the need to do that.

I have been less than impressed with Derrick Burgess this season. I often wondered why BB wanted him so bad. When I read BB's comments in the Globe, I thought it was BB's way of motivating Burgess.

That said, I wish posters on this board would stop linking Borges articles here. He does not say anything new and is quite mean spirited. If you are writing for a Boston newspaper and are generally mean (not objective) about your local team then you have lost me. Unfortunately, that applies to a large number of boston area journalists - in order of infamy: Tomase, Shaugnessy, Bob Ryan and Felger (in fairness to Felger, his analysis is objective some of the time). I think Breer is trying very hard to join this club.

Yeah, I thought that was just me, but what the hell does that mean?

Means Borges is on the prowl for his new main squeeze...and some of our front 7 are stupid enough to nibble his ear while he strokes their egos... It's more than likely AD, though, and the relationship will be short lived and bitter sweet as Ron's relationships with the Patriots personnel have generally been.

This was also potentially a value dig.

I think Burgess has played pretty well as of late.

I'd like to see him stick around next year.

Obviously Willie McGinest and Mike Vrabel were better. I do think he's underrated around here though, and I hope he's a Pat in 2010. Whatever FA we'd replace him with wouldn't be as good as he is.

As for who made the comments, Warren doesn't seem to be the type who would speak to Borges about much of anything. Given that it was a DL, my guess would be Wilfork, which isn't to speak badly of him. Honestly, I don't blame him- I'd be pissed if I was the only first-rounder stuck playing out my rookie deal too, despite being a Pro Bowler.
