Carucci: BB talked to Weis about returning

On WEEI today Vic Carucci said his sources indicated that BB talked to Weis about returning to the Patriots. But, apparently Kansas City targeted him very early in the process (several weeks ago) and got a deal going quickly. The combination of Pioli's history with Charlie and Haley wanting someone else to handle the play calling led them to make Weis the offer.

I wonder if it came down to money.

well, i'm sure that BB with his usual candor and openness will tell the first person who asks him. So, we'll never know, but I somehow doubt it "came down to money."

My own view is that "you can't go home again" and that fitting Weis and Belichick in the same building might have been a tight squeeze (hold the 'fat Charlie' jokes, please) since Charlie now has his own national reputation, for better or worse, after the exposure at Notre Dame. Sure, there would have been no doubt as to who was in charge, but it might not have been comfortable all the time. (I think that will be a challenge for Haley, BTW, but for different reasons. Let's face it, on name recognition among average fans nationwide, Weis has it all over his new "boss.")

Also, I think Charlie wants to run his own show in two or three years, so he would have had to "leave again" had he come to the Pats since there are no signs that the hooded one is ready to retire.

Might be a better chance for him to parlay this into a head coaching job? If he can turns things around on the offensive side in KC, as opposed to returning to NE, having success and people saying "Yeah, but he did it with Brady, etc"

First of all, Peppers had 13.5 sacks for the Patriots. And secondly, Maualuga is still coming to the Patriots in three years as a restricted free agent, that's what he was talking about gosh learn your facts.

I listened to the segment and that is not what Vic said. He said they (meaning Bill and Charlie) talk all the time though he didn't know if the subject of coming back came up. Said he believed that KC targeted him early, as early as when the rumors of his job being in jeopardy first surfaced.

There is only one reason Charlie is back to work already with $18M still coming in from ND. He wants another shot at an NFL HC job. He knew he wouldn't get it based on reuniting with the duo who went 18-1 in 2007. Resurrecting another franchise with Pioli and Haley (and a 7th round draft pick he never worked with but who knows his offense like the back of his hand) after they got off to a disappointing start absent him is another whole matter...

I think this makes a lot of sense- Weiss wants the ultimate job and that obviously is not possible in here. But in KC, he can at least entertain the possibility. I think the major knock on him in college was his ability to sign talent. Was there more?

Charlie had significant problems at ND... he may have come here, but in reality that would be a rehash of something old, BB would still the the man with all the credit..

Going to KC, and reestablishing credibility may be the best thing to resurrect his career... if KC makes the playoffs in the next year or two, ND will just be a dream...

Not sure how you quantify any of this... not at all confident that Vrabel or Seymour would have made any difference this year..

Sorry Mo, you're wrong here. Yes, he said they talk all the time but he also said his sources told him that the possibility of Weis returning to New England was broached between he and BB. Go back to the segment starting at the 22-minute mark: "I didn't get this directly from Charlie but according to people close to him, yes, there was a conversation [about his returning to New England]." Vic subsequently said (paraphrasing) he didn't know how substantive that conversation might've been, and emphasized that Kansas City went after him very hard and very early, which is why Weis ended up there.

I just listened and your parens is a stretch. I took it as the sources (which he clearly said wasn't Charlie) said it came up in conversation which I understood to be [the subject of his potential availablility] but they were not sure how far it went beyond that or that there was ever any real opportunity there. I'm sure as they talk regularly it did come up, what else would they talk about at that juncture beyond his getting fired and what he was gonna do. But in no way did what Vic convey indicate they had any kind of specific conversation about his coming back...which is what you posted.
