Brady on using Edelman at QB

Let's hope this ends up being true :

"“The thing about him is, the bigger the spotlight and the bigger the game, the better he’ll play,’’ Kent State coach Doug Martin said."

Great article indeed. Thanks for putting it up. The second page was more interesting than the first.

Good luck WWII!

“It’s pretty remarkable what he’s done as a former quarterback, which I don’t know how he was a former quarterback because he can’t throw at all,’’ said Brady, with a smile. “He tries to tell me, ‘Yeah, I threw for 2,000 yards.’ I’m like, ‘Man, you can’t hit that wall over there.’ And he somehow was playing. I’m glad he plays receiver and not quarterback anymore, for his sake and our sake.’’
LOL, I love TFB. Reminds me of him jabbing another QB

Q: Hey, Tom, I have to ask you about Matt Cassel, your sidekick.

TB: Yes.

Q: Because what went on this week between the two of you guys? What happened?

TB: Yes. Matt and I fight like teenage girls.

Q: You do?

TB: Yes, we do.

Q: What happened?

TB: We are always slapping each other around and wrestling and slap boxing and [messing] around with each other in the weight room. And so I decided to take that to the next level. And we were messing around in the quarterback room one day and he walked in with a milkshake, and I kind of put my foot by the door, and I kicked the door and the milkshake splashed up and went all over him. So he sat down, and I was laughing. So I said give me the towel, because I wanted to clean up the wall. So I threw the towel at his face, and it had shake all over it. He had a little shake in his mouth and he spit it all over me.

Q: So Cassel spit on you?

TB: Yes. So we had all this shake all over us. I smelled terrible. So I just laughed. I said I don't get mad, I get even. So the next day, I had one of my friends remove all the tires from his car and leave them right at his locker as he walked in off the practice field. So it was pretty good. He had to walk home that day.

Q: So let me get this straight. You had his car up on cinderblocks?

TB: Yes. It was up on cinderblocks, sitting right out in the parking lot. It was pretty funny.

Q: What did you do with the tires?

TB: I had three of them, and I made him search for the fourth one. I didn't tell him where the fourth one was. But all three of them were stacked up. So he was getting undressed after practice undoing the tape on his ankles, sitting on his tires. It was pretty funny.

Q: Did Cassel do anything to your car?

TB: No. I think I scared him. I don't know if you guys have ever seen the movie "Braveheart," but at the end when Mel Gibson is lying there and the king is laying on his death bed and the guy who is torturing him says, you just claim your allegiance to Long Shanks, so I made him call me Long Shanks. And after that we called a truce. So he knows that now I am willing to go to any, any depths to make him pay. So I think Matt Light was involved and I'm still looking for a confirmation on that. He filled my car, the entire car with Styrofoam peanuts, which he did the following day. And it was a rainy day, he opened the sunroof, and filled the entire car with it.

Q: Who did?

TB: Matt Light, and he blamed it on Cassel. But I know Cassel is way too scared to do anything. Matt Light is still claiming that he didn't do anything, but I've got confirmation from several different sources. So I am still waiting to get him back. But Belichick kind of called a moratorium on pranks at this point. But it's nice, keeps the team loose.

Q: What color was the milkshake flavor?

TB: Chocolate Myoplex. It was so nasty. It was all over me. Yes, you got to do something.

Anyone else think it's weird seeing Edelman wearing Bledsoe's old number?

One thing that stood out is why wasn't he picked sooner??

1820 passing yards with 13 TDs and 1551 rushing yards for 15 touchdowns. That is a total of 3371 yards on offense and 28 touchdowns!!

Pat White (who went in the second round) passed for 1844 yards (21 TDs) and 974 rushing yards (8TDs), 2818 yards and 29 TDs on offense.

I know nothing about NCAA rankings, but is the reason PW went high because WV are a 'better' team and had more coverage??

Also, with JE listed as a WR for the draft, did this also affect his draft position? If he had been listed as a QB, would he have been selected sooner as a 'wildcat' QB like PW??

There's no master list of positions. The Patriots could have "introduced" Edelman as a DT if they wanted to.

Well you have to factor in the level of competition hes facing but I think certain teams overlook guys that don't get invited into the combine which is fine with me :D

PW played better competition while putting up similar numbers. I think the wildcat teams were way to high on him though. If Miami didn't take him he probably would have fallen to the same spot JE was taken.

As far as JE at QB. I would love to see it work. Does anyone know how many snaps he took at QB this year? I seem to remember just one where it was a botched snap.

Note also from that article;
"So much confidence can leave a bad impression, but Pollack said the key is to understand Edelman.

“It’s figuring out where it comes from,’’ Pollack said. “If it comes from ****iness, it’s bad. If it’s from confidence, then that’s what he really believes. You have to be careful that you don’t squelch that because that’s what makes him good. It’s that intangible.

This has become a recurring theme for the Pats, Brady, Cassel, Hoyer , Edelman, all have supreme confidence,,

Guess it's a QB thing.

Great article, even if it is from the Globe.

Thanks for posting that, however... :D

Badminton is fun.

I think they were listed at exactly the right positions. There was no way Edelman was going to play QB in the NFL, wildcat or no. If anything, insisting on working out at QB would have suggested an inflexible attitude and counted against him. But as a WR, what 5'10" guy who runs a 4.52 40 and has never played receiver in his life is going to get himself drafted as above round 7?

Here's the amazing part, though. Forget the college passing numbers. You know how White was considered primarily "an athlete"? Well...Julian Edelman is a much better athlete than Pat White.

40/20/10 Vert Broad Shuttle Cone
w 4.55/2.63/1.60 35.0 09'09" 4.42 7.06
E 4.52/2.58/1.52 36.5 10'03' 3.92(!) 6.62(!)

Now that Edelman has shown he can actually run routes and catch the ball, I wonder where he would be drafted in a do-over?

Good stuff...

And here's Welker for comparison:

Wes Welker*|*Texas Tech,*WR*:*2004 NFL Draft Scout Player Profile

40: 4.6
Vert: 30
Broad: 9'5''
Shuttle: 4.01
Cone: 7.09

Of course, some things can't be measured, like football IQ & heart. LOL at Welker being the 67th best receiver out of the draft this season and now being one of the top 5-10 receivers in the league. So much for the draft pundits.

Post 15 & 16 say a lot about the type of player Edelman can become physically, hearing from his coach about the type of player/competitor he is says more. Welker of course is the perfect mentor for Edleman.

I was struck during camp by the comment from a poster here that Edleman was telling J Galloway where to line up on a play.....

As a Kent State product, it's amazing he was drafted. Don't forget, James Harrison and Josh Cribbs are undrafted Kent State players.

It might be the result, of scouts not taking the program seriously.

Makes you wonder what would have happened if Doug Martin hadn't called Dean Pees to rave about Edelman. . . .
