OT: Texas Tech fires Mike Leach

I'm not entirely sure about what happened here, but needless to say most fans of Texas Tech are on Leach's side.

Granted, it's unlikely to happen, but given what Leach has been able to do with the players Texas and Oklahoma didn't want (*cough* Wes Welker *cough*), I wonder what he could do with the talent on the Patriots roster. . . .

To be fair, it wasn't a closet or a shed.

Also, Leach apparently didn't get along well with TPTB at Texas Tech; on ESPN Colin Cowherd pointed out that the scuttlebutt about his latest contract extension was that they felt forced to give it to him in order to keep him.

And, as far as performance goes, he did take them to a bowl game every season, and won almost 2/3 of his games without the talent that the top Big 12 schools get.

While early reports said that James was locked in a “closet” and a “shed,” those were later found to be exaggerations. A television report in Lubbock showed that James was put in a large equipment garage and a room where visiting media conduct interviews after the games.

Don't bag on Randy my man. He doesn't need waterboarding to produce. All he needs in Bill to look at him cross eyed. Moss is very emotional and loves Belichick like a father. When daddy sent him home from practice it hurt his feeling. He thought he let his family down. He was in a funk that week and played terrible.

One week later and a pep talk from Tommy we had our WR back. With 3 TD's against the Jags Randy and Brady look to be hitting their stride at the perfect time.

1) I was kidding about the "closet" and "waterboarding". However, it doesn't matter whether it was the Superdome if he was locked into it and not allowed freedom to leave.

2) There's no denigrating his performance. But Bobby Knight was a winner also - - he still got fired for puttings his hands around a kid's neck.

3) Everyone who follows football knows the #1 issue hanging over the sport today is the concussion issue. Leach touched the third rail and got electrocuted. Bad timing for him.

So, can we fire everyone in districts that use "detention" as a school policy?

The NEW YORK TIMES got it wrong. The walkthrough was conducted by a lawyer who represents Leach. The guy was embellishing things.

He said, "Look at this 20 foot ceiling," pointing to the garage/shed's 8 foot ceiling. Then he said "There's even a fan here." And he points to an exhaust. I'm not blaming the lawyer for embellishing, he's just doing his job (except when he points to a low ceiling and calls it a 20 foot ceiling).

What's the difference between a shed and an equipment garage? Maybe one car could fit in that thing.

As for the press conference room, that was wrong as well. The reports are that he was locked in the electrical closet inside the press conference room. If you watched the video of the press conference room, you'd see the closet on the left when the camera goes through the room.

Regardless, people are making this more complicated than it is. The player had a concussion, he was locked in a dark room for 2 hours (according to Leach's lawyer) or 3 hours (according to James) and wasn't allowed to sit (all agreed that he wasn't allowed to sit. That's punishment, isn't it?

The coaches in the CBS report do themselves no favors at all. They defend this by pointing out that James was lazy? That to me shows they know they are in the wrong. The only reason to blame the kid for being lazy (even if it's true) is to show that he deserved discipline and punishment. But punishing him after a concussion is a totally different story. Those emails DAMAGE Leach's case more than help it because it shows coaches trying to justify what they did as a form of punishment for the player being a wimp, lazy, etc.

And the final bit by Coach Riley is funny, because he says he doesn't have kids but if he did he'd want them to learn from a man like Leach. But, I wonder, what if you had girls, coach, and they grew up to be fat?

Was James being punished? If yes, then what for? Did he have a concussion? If yes, then why was Leach leaving the kid secluded anywhere for 3 hours.

Why did Texas Tech fire Leach so quick? A man who is the programs greatest coach in school history. A coach who was bringing in the #24 ranked recruiting class in 2010. Why would Tech give that guy the axe? Not to mention the amount of money they're leaving on the table by firing him.

Very bizarre.

Leach's own lawyer admitted the kid was locked in a dark room for 2 hours and not allowed to sit.

He tried to explain it away as proper treatment for after a concussion. The team doctor said that James should go stand on the sidelines and wear sunglasses. The lawyer said he wasn't allowed to sit because the doctor advised standing, and the room was dark because he could not be exposed to light.

Having seen Mike Leach on 60 Minutes last year, Leach reminds me, in terms of his focus on the actual game aspects of football, of BB himself. According to Cowherd, he didn't really care for any of the "schmoozing"/"kissing up" aspects of the job, and didn't really do much to make friends in the administration (other than winning football games, of course).
