With a nod to Patfanken's "Idle Thoughts" thread, some observations coming off of the big win against Jacksonville.

1. I thought this was by far the most balanced offensive attack we have had all year. 197 yards rushing with Brady 23/26 for 267 yards (and 4 TDs/0 INTs) is just about as perfect as you can get. I'd much rather have that kind of balance than a 400 yard passing performance from Brady.

2. I thought it was Brady's best ball distribution since the Indy game. He's much more effective when he spreads the ball around.

3. I thought Maroney was clearly in the end zone when he fumbled, and it should have been a TD. But I'm glad BB benched him - it sends a clear message to the team about not tolerating screw ups in the red zone, and the team responded.

4. I thought the catch of the day was Chris Baker's TD reception. Baker was deadly in the red zone for us in preseason, and we haven't take advantage of that all year.

5. Light-Mankins-Koppen-Neal-Vollmer is one heck of an OL. 0 sacks and 197 yards rushing. Brady had lots of time to find the open receiver. The Pats are a legitimate SB contender with that kind of offensive line performance.

6. Best performance of the year from Jerod Mayo. He's finally looking back to form.

7. In the 10 years under BB, the Pats have only once had a pass rusher with more than 10 sacks in a season - 12.5 by Mike Vrabel in 2007, when the Pats were often up big and could let loose the pass rush. Tully Banta-Cain has 9.5 sacks with a game to go. Who would ever have believed it when we picked up Banta-Cain in free agency last year?

8. The secondary seems to have finally recovered from it's post-Indy funk. The addition of James Sanders has been huge. I can't figure out what happened to McGowan, who was arguably out best defender through 10 games, but Sanders and Springs have done a lot to stabilize the secondary. Meriweather looks like he is back on his early season form, after going through a bad stretch for several games.

9. Best drive of the game resulted in 0 points - the 12:12 74 yard drive in the 4th quarter. 20 plays (almost 1/3 of the 62 plays on offense for the Pats), 17 of them runs. Only 1 play went for more than 10 yards. 2 successful 4th down conversions. The Pats run 13 consecutive running plays. We haven't had a drive like that all season. At that point in the game, points were meaningless. But to be able to sustain that kind of drive will be huge for the Pats in the playoffs. It reminded me of the good old days with Corey Dillon in 2004.

It took 15 games to finally see a Pats team play for a full 60 minutes, and what a difference it made. Can we sustain it, against better teams? That's the big question right now.

While Jax has a shockingly bad 14 sacks on the season, the are tied for 9/10/11 in the league allowing 4.0 YPC against the run (we averaged 5.5).

In the non NE games, their run defense has allowed 3.89 YPC and 96.8 YPG which makes our 5.5 and 197 look that much better.

I think in practice they should practice doubling moss and welker and forcing the offense and brady to come up with third and fourth receivers. He's looking at his favorites too much. Throw to the TEs. Maybe they were taking my advice last game by throwing to the TEs, can't be sure.

The key is to have formations out of which the defense does not know what they will get, pass, run, etc. 5 wide just lets the defense drop 7 back and no one can get open, apparently from the new orleans game.

Good suggestions. I'd love to see that, especially more of Watson and Baker in the receiving game. Watson is by far our best "3rd WR" option.

Agree on this point. I'd rather have 4 wide with RB motioned out.

Agree with your observations. To add some thoughts on a couple of them...

The OL stays healthy = we're a dangerous team. In all but one loss or two losses max the main deficiency to me was 2nd half woes on offense. It's been debated time and time again where the blame falls, but I think we saw against Carolina and Jvill, even though they're not elite defenses, if our OL is clicking I really don't think even some of the inept playcalling we've seen can hold us down when needing to close out victories. And if Brady was ever a major part of the problem, there is no reason to think he would be at this point onwards after Sunday. Just too many weapons on offense now with Edelman and Taylor/Morris back, Maroney running the way he is. And that was without Neal completely back (from what I heard he played sparingly against Jville).

Springs will be another key in the playoffs. I think at the time he's our 2nd best CB and I can only hope that he wasn't utilized as much earlier in the season mainly for the sake of keeping him fresh for January. I feel good with him and Bodden as the starting corners. Mayo also another very encouraging sign, we need him to be the '08 Mayo and at least for last Sunday he was.

Wonder if this had to do with no sacks in three games and the body healing/responding..

Could not agree more, with all the cries for a third receiver not sure Aikens is the one, much rather use Watson/Baker as they are a proven commodity..

Well said

No sacks in 3 games... impressive.

real pleased, maybe his knee has gotten better somehow, still cannot turn quickly..

TBC is a consummate guy who excels in our system, welcome back.. BB also knows how to use him

Always thought they had the potential, but did not live up to in those other games.. see quite a bit of McGowan, but maybe he is a complimentary player more than a starter.

OTOH how many times have we seen this team play crappy against lousy teams?? To play well against the Jags is very encouraging.. they are big, powerful and have a great ground game.. this gives a lot of hope for the future..

Agreed even if he catching 2-3 catches watson is so fast that he puts alot of stress on LB and Safety when he is running up the seam.

Jacksonville has a suspect secondary and little pass rush. When Brady has time he hits the open receiver. When the TE aren't blocking they get in the pattern and open more often. Would be great if we could practice doubling Moss and Welker with a heavy pass rush that the OL tossed aside like ragdolls while the TE's streaked down the hash...but that ain't likely to happen any time soon. The OL is better with Volmer in and Neal healthy and Kaczur sitting though, and coupled with Taylor returning that may help the running game mitigate some of the pass pressure we've faced against opponents going forward.

Did not get to see the Jax'ville game,,
Was there much of the 5 or 4 wide reciever formations??

I'd like to think we are moving away from that shotgun/ empty backfield look.

Also it would be nice to see more than one "great" game,, this game against Houston will be weird because there is the arguement to sit the injured, and therefore can't go full bore. Maybe in the first half if things look good, that will be "great" first half that we will want to see.

Another thought, do you think Randy Moss is fired up from all the negative BS after the Carolina game? 4 TD's in the next 2 games. Best believe he's going to be a force in the postseason.

I just hope his back holds out ok.

By far? Edelman is a pretty close to being a #3 too.

Jacksonville has a very good run defense, and we ran it down their throats all game. That o-line that was featured on Sunday can be a difference maker in the playoffs. The colts would have a difficult time stopping that running attack that we just saw.

Agree on this point. I'd rather have 4 wide with RB motioned out.

Or you could even have 3 WR,1 TE, 1 RB. When they break the huddle, have Watson lined up out wide and motion the RB towards a TE-type position. Then depending on the pressure, the RB can be there for a short pass and can chip any oncoming rushers.

Yup, agree on this too. I feel as though Watson has been so underutilized this year in the passing game. Maybe we're "saving" him for the playoffs. Also, is it just me, but we haven't been calling RB screens like we've done previous seasons. (Partly could be due to Welker's effectiveness).

General kickassery aside, I'm not sure if I agree with benching Maroney.

Agree. Good write up Mayo.

What has gone under the radar lately is that Brady hasn't been sacked in four games and counting. Our OL is getting their act together- couldn't come at a better time.

Just a quick note. Although the Jags can't sack anybody, the other 3 opponents (MIA, CAR, BUF) have a combined 103 sacks this season.

Just something to think about.

It appears Brady's play is directly linked to O Line play.
