Decided to step down today citing health reasons as the main factor. When he's ready to coach again I'm sure BB would have a place on his staff for him if interested.

Re: OT: Urban Meyer out as Florida's HC

I'm curious to hear what the rest of the story is. It's not like Meyer's an old man, though he did allude to health issues. With the hours they put in and pressure they are under, it's a wonder that head coaches last as long as they do, whether it's at the college level or in the NFL.

Meyer and BB seem to be good friends so if or when Meyer does want to work again, BB would find a spot for him. If it is health issues, who knows; perhaps he would like to return to football some day, but without the pressure that comes with being a head coach.

I think he might take a year off or something, but it wouldn't surprise me if he were brought in as a "special offensive assistant" or something next fall. . . . especially if a certain Florida Gator were drafted by New England. . . . :D

Seriously, though, he's only 45, so, assuming that whatever health issues aren't permanent ones, he could certainly take a year or two off and still come back and coach for another decade or two.

Maybe he'll return as Pats' HC when BB decides to become New England's "Czar" of FB operations...

i dont know about the timing but your point is right: Meyer is a HC and will always be one. He is clearly one of the top 3 college coaches right now, if not the best. With his tenacity and leadership he displays and the ability to get his team ready to play, he is clearly not taking a coordinator position anytime soon.
I admittedly have no idea what to make of the "health" factor which is a complete wildcard, admittedly.

Meyer has considered himself a bit of a Belichick protege. He has done everything he can accomplish on the college level and may look to go into the Pros. I wouldn't mind seeing him with the Patriots. It would be very interesting.

He has a cyst on his brain that causes pain brought on by stress.

A month ago when rumors were circulating he might be headed to Notre Dame, he said he had no interest in coaching anywhere but Florida and intended to remain there as long as they would have him. After being hospitalized in early December that seems to have changed. Guys his age don't walk away over minor health issues. Apparently he has some cardiac concerns. That being the case, I wouldn't expect to see him here or anywhere next season.

Florida coach Urban Meyer resigns amid health concerns, will stay through Sugar Bowl

He was also hospitalized with chest pains, which were initially called dehydration, after the SEC championship loss.

FWIW, the cyst that pats1 mentioned is a benign cyst; he might have that treated as well (although I don't know how feasible that is for Meyer).

I saw this one coming a mile away

The ND vacancy is filled, so what exactly are people getting at?

Absolutely shocking, I thought once Kelley wrapped up ND Meyer would be a Gator for a long while, but you just can't ignore health.

And no folks, Meyer's great where he is, but I don't want any college coach touching this team, please lord no. Has it resulted in anything other than disaster ever?

PFT relays reports from Orlando that Meyer suffered a heart attack at some point in the 2009 season.

Mortensen reports that Meyer will remain with Florida in a non-coaching capacity.

I find it hard to believe that this is some kind of plot.

Florida is one of the three best jobs in all of college football. They already pay Meyer a tremendous amount of money. Hell, it's probably a better job than a lot of NFL jobs. Seriously... Buffalo or Florida?

The more I hear from people "on the inside", the more I believe that the man is just freaked out about his health. That's not the kind of thing that goes away easily, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's content to walk off into the sunset.

As for a replacement, I've heard that Florida is targeting a couple of former NFL coaches - Shanahan and Gruden. Shanahan was a former UF assistant in the 1980's, and has said that Florida is his favorite college team. Depending on who you believe, he apparently gave serious thought to leaving the Broncos when Spurrier resigned in 2002.

Gruden still has a home in Florida, and lobbied for the UF job while he was still being held hostage by the Raiders after Spurrier resigned.

Well, I think I might be one of the only Gator fans on this board. This really sucks. :( I'm saddened and I wish coach the best. All of you saying that he'll end up here as an assistant are dead wrong. Down here, the news is that he's remaining in Gainesville and will continue to help out with the team in a non-coaching capacity. I wish him the best in the future.

Rumors are now circulating of interest in Bob Stoops.
