A draft we should like

What makes some of you want Peppers? He's making 17 mil this year for Carolina and we all know we won't pay that.

We won't have to. He'll be a free agent unless Carolina wants to tag him at almost 21 million.

Wish to hell we still had Dave Thomas on this team. John Starks was a good defender and streaky 3-point shooter, but he just didn't seem to fit into the scheme.

Imagine if the Pats had cut Galloway and kept Thomas. . . .

I'll never understand why we traded a TE with probably the best hands on the team, with the possible exceptions of Faulk and Welker, and replace him with a blocking TE who wasn't a good enough blocking TE to stay on the team past week 2 or so and is now on his 4th team this year.

I usually defend Belichick, but between the Thomas-Matthews situation, and then trading draft picks for Alex Smith in order to cut him, he's really bulloxed the tight end position this year. Thomas has looked great for New Orleans this year...better than Shockey, and he'd not doing anything differently than he would have done in this offense.

What the hell, throw in Greg Lewis and Derrick Burgess too, and you have plenty of evidence for the "draft picks aren't worth much" crowd.

John Starks was a NY Knicks guard, LOL. You mean Duane Starks.

I've tried to forget the whole painful experience as quickly as possible. John or Duane, it's all just a bad memory to me.

With me at least, you're preaching to the choir.

Granted, it's hard for any TE to look good in an offense that also has Welker, but he could also have been used as a fullback, which might actually have made a difference (maybe, just maybe, whoever's calling the plays wouldn't be so quick to give up on the run. . . .).

I agree with us needing a "True Fullback".....are there any big bruising fullbacks coming out next season that we could draft in the middle to late rounds?

There's a lot of them...in fact, there will be some very good ones that go undrafted. The question is will Belichick deem it worthy of a roster spot. The answer since he's been here is a resounding "no". It would fundamentally change our offense. The best we'll have here is a TE-H-back, or a Heath Evans type who's primarily a receiver.

That would be better than none at all as exists now.

I don't think we trade any picks for next year. This is supposedly a good draft. We don't have a 3 and 5. So, I think we will use all of them.

We already have two nr 1's in 2011 because of the Seymour trade. Hypothetically, let's say the Raiders really tank. We could trade down from a top 2-3 pick and stay in top 10 and pick up an extra 2. That would give us plenty of picks for next years draft.

We are really set to have a nice 3 year run in drafts. Hopefully, the scouting dept. is on their game and pick the right guys.
The Patriots are going to need all their picks to replace their losses

to free agency.

I was thinking this yesterday, I wondered how many other teams don't have a fullback. The answer is the Patriots and the Colts are the only teams without a FB.

Part of the problems on offense seem to be related to formations. Team like Dallas, New Orleans can create mismatches just by the way the line up. Often the fulback is the forgotten man. How many times have you heard 'That was a nice safe pass to the FB in the flat?'

The Patriots have no 'easy' plays. They also have struggled in short yardage situations without a true FB.

At the moment. I think it's quite likely that the Pats will fill that 3rd round gap, at least, before the second round ends. They may do it by trading away a player, or they may rearrange their picks somehow (e.g., trading two of their seconds for a higher second, a third, and a fifth).

I think BB will use all his second round picks because this draft is deep and the 2011 draft is getting shallower every time a junior declares. Plus he has 2 1st rounders for 2011 already.

If Chung, Butler, Brace and Vollmer were coming out this year, except for Butler, it is doubtful any would be day 1 picks.

If BB stands pat he gets four red chip prospects. That can create a lot of depth or fill a hole or two if used properly. (IE: No Bethel Johnson types.)

I hope you are correct. Like I have heard from more than one fan; its nice to have EXTRA pic's every year but if you just keep trading than for the next year and the next year what good are they.
We need players now and on defense. Grab a OL and go DL and Pass rusher and that will help this team. And please resign Vince. We need a agressive defense that can make plays and not sit back and than react.

I haven't followed the fullbacks much, but Nolan Nawrocki from ProFootballWeekly came out with his All America team yestrerday and listed John Conner from Kentucky as his choice at fullback, noting: "A strong, thick-trunked, powerful blocker, the underutilized Connor was solid when he touched the ball." Conner's a 5'11", 240# guy. Nawrocki listed Rashawn Jackson of Virginia and Cory Jackson of Maryland (both listed at 6'1" 245#) as his honorable mention picks at the fullback position.

Another guy to watch is 6'0" 238# Manase Tonga from Brigham Young, who blocks for Harvey Unga. I didn't get to see Brigham Young destroy Oregon St. in the Las Vegas bowl tonight, but perhaps those who watched have some observations on him.

I saw it and Unga is a beast. Very slow, but very powerful.

They generate "interest," if you will.

How was Tonga as a FB?

Big, but slow. Good lead blocker, looks to have some pass catching skills, but slow. Looks like a 4.8 or 4.9 guy if running full tilt down hill.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Leave it to a Pats fan to make some picks on our real needs.

This seems like a nice draft for us. A lot of fans seem to like Tate but I would rather have a RB.
Given BB's history I expect a trade back on one of our 2nd rounder for the next year.

from NEpatriotsdraft.com

27 Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho
Just like Logan Mankins, this pick couldn't get less sexy. That said, Iupati
is an athletic big man that will instantly shore up the porous interior of the Patriot offensive line.

47. New England (TEN) .
Jeremy Beal, DE, Oklahoma
Athletic DE that translates to an OLB for the Patriots.
Should finally bring the Patriots some consistent pass-rush.

48. New England (JAX) 6'3 - 260 lbs.
Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan 6'2 - 263 lbs
Oh, you want more pass rush? Brandon Graham will give you pass rush skills
that compliment a solid run-game and a non-stop motor

59. New England Patriots
Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
Tate would finally provide the true #3 Wideout that Tom Brady has been looking for since Jabar Gaffney left for Denver.

from FF Toolbox

Jeremy Beal, DE, Oklahoma
He may only be a junior during the 2009 campaign, but Jeremy Beal has been a dominating pass rusher for two years with the Sooners of Oklahoma. If he opts to leave for the NFL a year early, he will likely be nearly as dominate of a force in the NFL. Even as a redshirt freshman in 2007, Beal earned a couple of starts and finished the campaign with one sack and 5.0 tackles-for-loss.
In 2008 Beal stepped into a starting role and never looked back. He started all 14 games that season and ended up with an impressive 8.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles-for-loss. He even added 61 tackles and four pass break-ups. Everybody wanted to see if Beal could do it again in 2009 as an upperclassman and he did not disappoint. Through the regular season, Beal led the team with 11.0 sacks and 18.0 tackles-for-loss. Once again he proved that he is more than just a pass rusher and totaled 65 tackles.

Beal has already shown that he can consistently get to the quarterback, and his production in 2009 has proven to scouts that he was not a one year wonder. If he opts to go to the NFL he may not be a first round selection, but with a good showing at the NFL Combine and in personal workouts he could be a second or third rounder very easily.

Brandon Graham is currently the best pass rusher in the Big Ten, and one of the top four or five pass rushers in all of college football. In 40 career games, he has accumulated 40 tackles for loss and 22 sacks. Graham's biggest question mark (as far as his draft status is concerned), is what position he'll end up playing in the NFL. At 6'2 and 263 pounds he is somewhat of a "tweener". He is slightly undersized for a 4-3 defensive end and there are questions about whether or not he will be able to effectively drop into coverage if he plays as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Regardless of what position scouts see him at, he is a consensus late first round or early second round prospect. His best fit may be as a defensive end for a team that runs a version of the cover 2 defense. He isn't the biggest end, but he plays the run extremely well for his size. He does a great job of turning ball carriers back inside and right into his linebackers. Couple that with his quick first step and wide array of pass rushing maneuvers, and he is similar in a lot of ways to Robert Mathis of the Indianapolis Colts. His draft stock should continue to rise every week as he continues to make big plays for the Wolverine defense.

1.) I agree with Mayo. I don't think we'll be picking that high. Also, if we are in the 22 to 23 range, we could trade down to the bottom of the first, or the top of the second, and still get Iupati or one of the Pouncey brothers. We don't have to jump the gun early.

2.) Whoever did this draft did a really good job.

3.) If we trade down, we could have an extra pick to select a 3-4 linemen. I'm not necessarily talking about replacing Seymour, but we could use some quality depth.

4.) Mayo made a good point. We should give one Tate a chance before we select another. We have Brandon. On the other hand, competition couldn't hurt. Moss is getting old. We could use the depth on this team.

5.) If we don't select a wide receiver with that pick, we should seriously consider Ryan Matthews with that pick. He's a good back.
