Problems with replay and proof that refs just make things up sometimes (link)

You'll see the first ref signal Patriots ball on the offside kick yesterday. The other refs signal Bills ball, and he just changes his mind. The guy has no idea.

OK, that's fine with me, but then I want to know why on certain plays the replay booth needs to be 100% certain so it can overrule the call on the field.

Sometimes refs guess, the booth should not take the guess as gospel.

Because guessing in real-time is a requirement sometimes. But to assume a guess on a replay I think is just wrong. I don't think there's any better way than to require conclusive evidence on a replay.

What bothers me the most is the inconsistency with which PI is called. I can't tell you how many times I've seen an obvious mugging go uncalled this year while minor contact draws a flag.

I personally think you should be able to review anything that can physically be reviewed, it's not like coaches have unlimited challenges.

I think a replay guy, when told the ref just made up the call, should have the opportunity to make a ruling based on what he sees. Say, 85-90% certainty.

I had enough prof they make things up when Merriweather was flagged for taunting while laying flat on his belly after making a hit. If you recall he hadn't even started to get up when the cough.. ref threw the flag.

No ref in their right mind would admit to making it up. In theory you would think you could use a system where the ref says he isn't really sure, but too many "guesses" over the season may reflect poorly on a ref to the league. Thus the refs wouldn't be admitting their uncertainty. The way it is now works best IMO with regards to replay having to be conclusive. They certainly need to do something about the PI rules, and some of the other inconsistent wishy washy crap.

Just make it a 15 yd/half the distance to the goalline penalty to mitigate the damage done by bad calls. This is the rule in college and you don't see defenders intentionally tackling receivers when beat.

Yea and how do you "police" it? You have some guy upstairs saying "NOPE it looked like you hesitated so you weren't sure"? There are times where refs just want a confirmation from another about what they saw. Heck on FGs you see the refs look at each other. It's just a way to sort through information in real-time.

Talking about refs making it up...the end of teh Titam game when Young picked up the aborted snap and ran was not pushed into the endzone, fumbled and yet for SOME reason Steratore put it out a few yards...THAT was making it up BIG TIME!! He wasn't even close to being down...MAKING it all up is part of it all...the bobble thatw as so so long on the 4 and 2...a QUICK bobble..there is MUCH made up

Steratore is just horrible.. At one point, someone was asking for an explanation and Steratore put his hand up, said something like "I don't want to hear it" and then proceeded to make the absolute WRONG CALL.. I swear I saw one or two of his crew look at him like "WTF"?
