Red Sox trade Mike Lowell to Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez

11:16pm: Rosenthal reports that the teams have a preliminary deal in place that would send Lowell to Texas for Ramirez, with the Red Sox taking on nearly all of Lowell's salary. Red Sox ownership still has to approve the deal, which is pending medicals.

We know the Red Sox are interested in Adrian Beltre. It's hard not to wonder if this proposed trade is a precursor to a Beltre signing.

Looks like where there was smoke, there was indeed a fire. Thanks for the memories Mike Lowell. You were instrumental on the 2007 championship team. It's a shame that health injuries hampered him from contributing in recent seasons.

So what is MaxRam's upside? Will he be a catcher for us or a 1st baseman?

Beltre is still not a sure thing. I believe his agent is asking for double digit millions and I don't think the sox want to pay out that much for a 3rd baseman, especially if they have to eat most of Lowell's 12.5M salary in this trade. still can't believe we paid him 12.5M!!

A physical revealed that Mike Lowell needs surgery on his thumb , so the Rangers said thanks, but no thanks to the long discussed deal. What do the Sox do with him now? What a wierd situation. I can't imagine Lowell will be "happy" to be back. He's a pro's pro though, so I wouldn't expect him to give anything but his best. Personally, I think this is actually good for the Sox. Lowell is a terrific player, and has some pop. Him at 3rd, and Youk at first, is a better combo than Youk at 3rd, and Kotchman at first. Kotchman sucks. He's a good defensive player, but he's got a limited bat. In the Sox line-up he's somewhat exposed.

I'm glad it got stopped, the dude was seriously hurt last year and still put up numbers. We're going to trade him AND pay $9 million to get a backup catcher with bad numbers who can't field? Is that 3 million really that critical? Keep him and rotate him at 3rd/DH with Youk/Papi. Theo has made some good moves in the past but a lot of what he does just confuses me.
