Since the ad companies seem to have no regard for their clients and still can't seem to prevent malware from running, I have turned off ALL ads until further notice. If you experience any pop ups, etc. from this point on - scan your computer with anti-malware software and remove it:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

This program is incredibly effective in removing this nonsense. Please add any further reports to this thread or the one in the help forum. An e-mail is going to follow this, so please disregard if you've read this notice.

Thank you very much Ian for the early Christmas present. The virus scan software was madding. I don't post much read the board every day, Thanks again

If anyone has had malware problems of any type I highly recommend Malwarebytes for removal because its free and well known throughout the computer tech industry I use routinely on clients computers. However with that said I'm going to donate because I know not having ad-revenue is going to make maintaining the site even more expensive.

Well said! This decision will cost Ian.

It can't be repeated too often what a great job Ian (and the mods) do -- and how much effort and cost goes into it. Whatever we can do to support, we should.

Thank you Ian. As somebody who was effected by this, and eventually wiping their system due to these issues, this is good news.

One thing also was I switched Anti Virus programs. the McAfee I had was useless. I swtiched to Avast and that caught a few more than tried to get on from here. It sucks that this is going to cost Ian money, but you can't have an angry group of posters.

This did the trick for me - picked up malware and trojans that malwarebytes missed

SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!

I'm not sure if anyone else has had problems with the fake AntiVirus Live program taking over their computer either. I'm not sure that came from here or not but it is a tough one to get rid of.

That's the one a professional computer repairman recommended to me after I'd tried most of the other usual suspects.

Didn't fully do the job either, but so be it.

MalwareBytes & SuperAnti Spyware are two I've had good luck with and got rid of it. Make sure all the items are checked for SuperAntiSpyware and don't run a "Quick Scan" - run a "Full Scan".

I don't know how I'll deal with it - but I'm more upset to learn that this caused several people data loss and hundreds of dollars to have to have it professionally removed. This is inexcusable.

I never lost any data and my anti-virus is free or nominal but regardless those particular ad companies should be banned from the internet:mad: My pc recently got a trojan horse virus from one of the Sprint ads; I was trying to get to the sign in box and it just kept following me  Then the little x appeared "close window" so I clicked it and wham. It happens though, and sadly this isn't the only site with that issue.

Thank you, I was about to stop visiting your site. The past week has been very bad.

I appreciate you taking this stance. I haven't had any issues, but I read someone on another team's board that did.

Thanks Ian. I've been having some problem with trojan horses and spywares....not certain if I got it from this site but one less website to worry about sounds good to me. Thank you~

It's unreal - and the fact they're stupid enough to permit it when they know this is happening (and that it happened before) just defies logic. As I said I just feel bad people had to deal with it. I had my PC get infected as well and I had to run two scans with two different programs to clean it. To hear people lost data because of a site I run is just tough to take. I can't imagine losing music I paid for, kids pictures, important e-mails, etc. Being responsible for something like that makes you feel pretty crappy :(

Tough call to make Ian I have never had any issues with your site in the last 4 years can I donate to the site again to help out I know the lack of ad's is going to kill your bank balance.

I'll figure something out. All indications right now are that the ads in question was being served by Burst, so I'll see what changes I can make to do something different.

I guess the only thing is if you've ever wondered, this is exactly what the board looks like for those who donate - although that's hardly the point. But for now it will stay that way for everyone to make sure no one else has any issues - and I'll have to go from here and see what I can come up with.

I think this is a great move by Ian, it's about time sites started standing up to these ad companies who think they can do whatever they want to because they know the site administrator needs the money.

This site may need the money but this site's administrator obviously has some principles. And he respects the team his site represents as well as his site's namesakes, namely us.

Much appreciation to Ian not just for closing the ads but also for listening to his members. Mostly for standing up to ad companies who think they have everybody by the ____s. The money will be raised somehow; personally I think Bob Kraft should donate;)
