A friendly request

At the risk of appearing pedantic.

I am a frequent reader and infrequent poster but I have noticed a trend in a lot of the to Moss or not to Moss thread, the LoMo is made of glass threads, the BB can't draft threads, and last but not least the sky is falling threads.

Personal insults, words like ******, and idiot are frequently being used when there is a disagreement much more frequently than I have seen in the past. Just to perfectly clear it is possible for 2 reasonable people observing the same situation to development oppositional positions. It doesn't make either stupid or ******ed it makes them human.

I can only speak for myself but I cringe when I open a thread now because I know I am going to to have to sift through a litany of insults to find much insight into football.

This board is one of the better and more civil NFL discussion boards I have been to and I hope it stays that way. I am respectfully asking, please lets keep it civil and if you really feel the need to make a personal comment send a PM and try not to hijack a thread that started out about football and not someones IQ.

I realize that most readers and posters don't engage in the name calling, but the minority of posters that do can ruin the experience for others.

But it is the nature of the medium. This setting is a breeding ground for argument, and the nature of the message board, where you can limit your point of view, ignore the strengths of the other side, etc, means that the argument usually is never focussed.

Argument is good to an extent, especially constructive arguments. I have had my point of view changed by some good arguments and solid refutations of opinions I put forth on this board.

It is when those arguments just lapse into name-calling, flaming, and bashing (all of which clearly contribute nothing to football knowledge) that things just go south quickly. My suggestion is that the mods could be a little more hands on and quicker to put a rein on it and issue warnings at the least.

Or people can just back out of it when they see it dengerating into a flame war. I'll be the first to admit that I've done my fair share of name-calling. I've since tried to limit it when I'm debating with people. I think I'm making improvement. I just backed out of a long debate today because half of the debate centered around me and the other guy throwing verbal barbs at one another. I, of course, made the best points in the debate.

It's getting pretty easy lately to distinguish good, stand up posters from some of the garbage and immaturity that's been around here lately. Even though we are just fans, we still represent this teams' fanbase to some extent. I tend to believe that the entire organization should be class, from the front office all the way down to the fanbase. We all know some of the other teams' crappy fanbases and reputations, I don't want to ever represent myself or my team like that.

Of course when you're on a forum that's debating in any way (like most do) you have to show respect for the other person's point of view--regardless of whether or not you agree or disagree to the fullest. I try to remember that people will rarely see things the same way, and that some are extremely passionate about their opinions.

I also try to stay away from any kind of thread that I don't agree with right off the bat, for example "Trade Brady, Fire Belichick" etc--because I know I'm probably not going to have anything decent to add.
