FARINELLA: Piling on Moss too easy ... and wrong

I really have no idea what agenda these people criticising Moss have.

Lets have a look at his lifetime season averages excluding this season and compare them to this season.

Through 11 full seasons ----------This season through 13 games
--------Yards 1200-------------------------- 1074
----------TDs 12------------------------------ 9
----------Rec. 76----------------------------- 60
------avg. Yards 15.7------------------------ 15.6

As you can see he is on course to match if not beat his lifetime season averages. He hasn't said one word out of place, he is a team captain.

I think we need to start some sort of special thread and put every idiot commentator in it and come back to them at the end of every season and let it be known that we New England Patriots fans are sick and tired of journalism for the stupid and demand intelligent writing/commentary from the local media.

You need to stop posting logical responses backed up by facts ..... People watched the game on Sunday and Randy Moss did not have 3 TD's in the rain .... so you sir are wrong.

That sounds good, but the media...both print and spoken.. thrives on half truths and hyperbole.. often the facts get lost in the hysteria.. everyone loves a scapegoat.

"Stats are for losers," Belichick said. "The final score is for winners."

What has Randy Moss ever won??

And Dan Marino? Chris Carter? Wes Welker?

Yeah and BB was talking about single game stats, not a whole season or career of stats. I'm making the very same point as BB but with statistics, if we win a game you can't criticise a receiver. If we lose a game you might have some basis for criticism but we are a team with a winning record and most likely headed to the postseason, Randy has had a great year, not his very best but certainly his second best in the last six years. And to think of all the looks he is missing out on because of a certain Mr. Wes Welker.

Tell us about his stats in the 2007 playoffs.

You're a right pain in the arse.

Frankly, you are holding back. It's rather gentlemanly of you. Perhaps a bit of holiday cheer. It's right nice of you.

As for your first point, I kind of doubt that Coach had players like Randy in mind when he said that.

As to your second, I think it's a cheap shot. There are many fine, even great, players who have never won a Super Bowl, to which you have to be alluding since Moss has helped win a Conference Championship.

Moss is an easy target because of his history. I'm still listening to his teammates and coaches more than to "experts" on this Board. Let's see how this all plays out over the next few weeks.

I had huge hopes for 98.5. What a disappointment. The disingenuous agenda of F & M is an embarrassment. I had hoped for a balanced approach to counteract the Big Show. It was foolish to think that a down-the-middle, unbiased, honest treatment of local sports teams was possible. I don't even have the station as one of my car radio settings anymore.

Ya know why Moss is such an ez target?

Because it's EZ to see him quitting on a block that is literally still in the camera view of the LOS.

I know that he had a "Reputation" for being a dog/lazy etc..., but I didn't care to hear or pay it any justice until I was able to SEE it with my OWN eyes.

The guy is an unreal talent, that is not under debate.

Funny that because I watched him continue to block for Welker to pick up a first down.

Of course we should listen to all the Moss detractors, they'll all football experts and are getting text messages from inside Randy's brain. They exactly what's going on. How can you doubt the wisdom of Felger?

I believe between writers from other cities and green bay packer pole-smokers like felger, is a) what he used to do to their favorite teams and b) an attempt to weaken the pats.

the writers are lining up to try to be the one who is right about the pats downfall

again......my ONLY dislikes with the pats and BB is that a) he mostly ignored the LB position in a scheme where LB is the most important position b) he sold out to the big play offense that does not line up well with the fundamentals that made this team great in the first place.

I think at this point, his ego is somewhat in his way......he won with his original principles, and now he wants to win some other way.......

I agree on the linebacker situation to an extent. I think he tried to address it, but he tried to do so in the same way he established it in the first half of the decade: by picking up value free agents and looking for late round gems. Even so, he added Colvin and Thomas, two high priced veterans who didn't pan out. He tried to address the LB situation, unfortunately he just didn't do a great job of it, some of it his fault, some of it bad luck.

As for the offense, I think the new defensive rules influenced the style change. I also think we'd be more balanced if we didn't seem to lose 2-3 running backs every year to long term injuries.

Making excuses for Moss, or in some case even denying there was anything amiss on Sunday is as wrong as the ignorant, gleeful kneejerk piling on we've seen here and from some agenda driven hacks in the media. They polarize any rational discussion of what is in fact a legitimate concern in which the truth lies somewhere in the middle and is troubling enough in it's own right. What gauls me most about Randy's defenders though is their need to attempt to smear others who have never lacked effort and rarely if ever lacked focus in their attempt to rationalize his performance on Sunday and at points in his career including here.

Randy has been by all accounts by and large a good teamate and a great player in his tenure here. He has also struggled periodically, increasingly of late, maintaining consistent focus and intensity when faced with adversity. We saw it in the playoffs even against teams who could not implement the emerging blueprint. A personal situation emerged during the playoffs, and the media reaction to it seemed to knock him almost entirely off stride in crunch time. But in the aftermath of a heartwrenching SB loss, ultimately the lions share of the blame went to the OL or Brady or the defense. We saw it when Brady went down and Moss initially struggled to remain motivated to perform with a QB who hadn't played since HS (although the lions share of the blame was heaped on the QB).

We've seen it this season if we are actually paying attention and not too busy locating the usual suspects to blame. As a team captain, when the latest adversity beset his team he should have stepped forward and shown some determination to right the ship. Instead he curled up in a ball because his feelings were hurt because he put himself in position to be collaterally damaged.

He's not the anti christ. He's not trying to tear the team down or stage a palace coup. But he's also proving he is not a great leader or a great football player. Those guys are self motivated and step up when challenged and elevate themselves and often in the process everyone around them in the face of adversity. Rand is just an other worldly talent who wants to win and works hard doesn't understand that a lot more goes into winning than that - like overcoming adversity and battling through physical or mental limitations that are impacting their ability as well as an entire teams chances of achieving their mutual goal.

That attitude can change from team to team, or season to season or even week to week. There are lots of examples across the league even this season. Randy seemed to overcome disappointment last season when he was surrounded by a veteran cast who chose not to pack it in. This season facing adversity on a younger team with limited veteran presence, he has not yet. In fact he has trended down over the last couple of weeks. Brady and Belichick have continuously attempted to keep him engaged in the effort this season, often to their own detriment. They've ignored their critics in the process, which is what they always do in order to remain focused. Now they are faced with the added burden of re- engaging him after he could not ignore critics his own performance offered carte blanche to. He did what Brady was imploring him all game not to do, he let his frustration with his situation allow his performance to go from bad to worse.

He can still dig out of it and potentially turn his season, and possibly this teams, around. Show your critics they're wrong or prove once and for all they aren't. Show the guys who had faith in you and stuck their necks out to prove it by giving you a shot at redemption and more and continue to do so they weren't just suckers for another great talent with a painfully misunderstood sob story. But it's on him to prove it because on Sunday he again gave his critics ample evidence to disprove it, and to deny that or attempt to shift blame in an effort to defend him from criticism and personal accountability is just ludicrous.
