Richard Seymour: ‘I could have helped’ - BostonHerald.com

“I have a lot of friends there. I know what’s been going on; the troubles they’re having. When I’m on the inside rushing, (opponents) ain’t going to put just a guard on me one-on-one. I would have freed up room for Tully (Banta-Cain) or (Derrick) Burgess to be one-on-one on the outside. Tully and I talked about that all through training camp -- what we would do rushing together from the same side.

“You can’t just have great coaching and no talent. You’ve got to have both. Bill (Belichick) is an extremely smart coach. Extremely (smart) ... but he thinks it’s his schemes all the time. He had players like ’Hot Rod’ -Rodney Harrison myself, Ty (Law), Willie (McGinest), (Tedy) Bruschi and (Mike) Vrabel in that system to make it look good.

................. Oh Richard ... you could have taken a discount.

It's actually a reasonable article (for a change) when you take away the jilted lover mentality Seymour has to the Patriots for the manner in which he was dealt to Oakland.

Move on, Sey.

typical boston media...the herald goes over to ask seymour about his old team when they are down. i didnt click the article but is it written by seymour's buddy borges ?

Had he given us a clue that he was remotely interested in re-signing and not chasing the almighty buck, he probably still would be. We maximized a return on a player we knew we weren't gonna have next year.

I'm still okay on this deal

Its the biggest **** up that BB has ever made imo. It might work out long term but just look at our D this year.

Why is the adult name for a domestic male chicken banned?

We should have a rule against reading any statements by ex-patriots.

Seymour is telling the truth. We all know it. Most here were fine with getting a 2011 draft choice for Seymour, but that doesn't mean that we wouldn't be better off with Seymour playing.

THE QUESTION IS
Would be better off with Seymour getting the reps that Burgess gets, and more? If you don't think we'd be better off with Seymour, than all I can say is that I strongly disagree.

Excellent points made by Seymour.

He's right about pretty much everything he says in that article. I don't quite like that he said it; would rather he kept his mouth shut and just let the glaringly obvious on-the-field results tell the story for him, but oh well. Doesn't change the fact that the Pats are much worse off without him, and everyone in the locker room knows it.

File this under the "sad but true" category.

This is precisely why he isn't here any more. There is no I in team. And it is a coaches league. He and his media toady are like brothers from another mother, one who bristles at if not detests Bill and the credit he has gotten for building a championship organization here when we all know talent wins...

That pass rush sure was awesome when Seymour was here last year. Banta Cain was a monster.

Good point. How dare that man tell the truth? Here in the land of brainwashed Belichick sycophants, such a thing is not allowed.

Of course, Bruschi and Harrison were making points critical of Belichick when they were talking about 4th and 1, but we'll just ignore that because we can't cram them into some invented template. And, of course, Belichick found Seymour such a problem that he worked out that contract a few years back...

Belichick always credits the players and Seymour makes it sound that BB thinks schemes will work with any players. That is so far from the truth and pure case of people taking advantage know BB doesnt respond. Its BB personality and reputation which will make people always credit and criticize him all the time.
When the pats were winning what did everyone keep saying ? they have maybe 1 hall of famer. but they are smart and dont make mistakes. How many in the media or elsewhere actually gave any players credit ? Now BB is dumb because he didnt think players are bigger than the scheme.
His moves havent worked and those are BB's fault . no doubt about that. But i dont think he is arrogant enough to think that burgess was seymour's replacement .
And one more thing. Seymour didnt play in the playoffs during the 2004 superbowl at least in the indy game where we shut down the colts 20-3 .Neither did law. So certainly he was something BB got by just fine at times...

Is there a point in your comment? I just don't get it. TBC was with the niners last year.

BB is not infallible but some people here cannot accept that. This was a big mistake as far as the team was concerned this year.

Seymour was known as a leader, he had one of his best seasons in 2008, we lost Bruschi, Vrabel and Harrison also. Imo its the stupidest decision that has been made by the Patriots in the Belichick era.

The more I think about it, Pioli might have been a bigger loss than Josh, he might have stopped something like this from happening.

I dont have a problem with accept that BB is not infallible.Seymour was one of our best players no doubt but also very inconsistent. He was very talented and media savvy and showed up sometimes in games and sometimes doesnt for all his talent. Of course he has borges on his side and people always made excuses about his injury and how he is occupying two blockers but he by no means was a consistent player. As a leader sure he may have been something. But he also complained last yr to the media why he isnt being used on 3rd down.Would rodney or bruschi do that ?
When things dont go well..all missing pieces look irreplaceable. If we had kept seymour this yr and say not won a SB and he had made his way to the jets yr and in all likelihood he was not coming back- people would killed our FO for letting him.
I dont care if he thinks he wouldve helped or not .He is right , he wouldve helped more than what we have right now ,no argument there. But dont assume bb doesnt think players are important. The pats gave seymour one of the biggest contracts and his production after that hasnt been any earth shattering either.Just my opinion.

Its not that people think BB can do no wrong. Those of us who drink the koolaid are just smart enough to realize that he does make mistakes, but not as often as other coaches. He does get a pass on alot of mistakes, thats true. Im still mad about going for it, instead of getting the FG last week. For that matter, im still mad about not kicking the FG in the 07 SB. However, i'm still smart enough to know that we have one of the best coaches ever, and im going to trust his judgement. I'm certainly not going to believe that this season we would be undefeated just because some people on this board say Seymour would've made THAT much of a difference. Nobody here knows for sure what wouldve happened had he stayed. Hell, he couldve been injured in game one for all we know.

As for Pioli, if he loved Seymour so much, why didnt he go after him??

I was gonna give you a respectful reply until I read this bit. I'm sorry but if you are going down that route its just pointless discussing anything with you.
