Winter meetings/ Red Sox rumos thread

Granderson is going to put up huge numbers in Yankee Stadium and all they gave up was a bag of balls and a couple of cracked bats. Yanks just got ALOT better.

Isn't that's what I just said? He will put up huge power numbers in Yankees Stadium, but I still question his batting average, OBP and his ability to strikeout on a Adam Dunn level. Cracked bats and bag of balls? What are you talking about? They gave up there top prospect in Austin Jackson, one of there top relievers from lat year in PHil Coke. That's far from a bag of balls. Great deal from them, I think we will make some as well however.

Phil Hughes????? Great reporting there Einstein.

HUGE difference between Hughes and Kennedy. Sorry for the insult, that's not my true nature.

Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald says the Red Sox are unlikely to be suitors for Soriano.

Free agent center fielder Mike Cameron has suggested that he would happily move to left field for the right team. That team could be the Red Sox, who are interested in the veteran, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Cameron, who will be 37 in January, is drawing interest from the Cubs and Yankees as well. Seattle could also be a possible destination for Cameron, who played in Seattle from 2000-03.

Cameron likely won't be picked up until after both Bay and Matt Holliday are off the market. Should both of these players escape Boston's grasp, Cameron could be a reliable safety pickup because he still has pop in his bat, despite his age. With 24 homers and 70 RBIs in 149 games last summer for the Brewers, the 15-year vet has proven that he can still get it done. He has averaged 23 homers, 82 RBIs and a .788 OPS per year over his career and has hit at least 21 homers and has driven in 70 runs in each of the last four seasons.

Earlier today, Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald tweeted that the Red Sox met with Escobar's agent Peter Greenberg, who also represents Rafael Soriano.

Hmm -- so is Papelbon going to be moved? the Red Sox appear serious in their search for a new closer.

PS Granderson trade is pretty big for the Yanks. Very nice OPS and power numbers for a CF. However his OBP leaves something to be desired. He's not batting leadoff any time soon. Where is Damon going to play then?

If the Red Sox have to settle for a 37 year old Mike Cameron instead of Holliday or Bay, then this offseason was pretty disastrous. A lineup already lacking pop in the playoffs loses a silver slugger and plugs in... a hitter that I wouldn't even consider better than Victor Martinez at this stage of Cameron's career.

The Yankees paid a lot for Granderson I think. Austin Jackson is there top OF prospect. The only positional player that ranks higher than him, is Jesus Montero. Ian Kennedy is going to be a good pitcher, and Phil Coke is a Mike Stanton type. One of those hard throwing lefties that can can pitch to right handed batters without a problem. Kennedy ended up with Arizona, but Detroit got Matt Shertzer (sp?) from them.

Granderson is a toolsy player, but he's regressed a little bit, and he can't hit lefties to save his life. He's not a particularly stellar defensive player either. He's good defensively, but he misjudges a lot of balls. PErsonally, I think the Yankees overpaid, as I feel that Granderson is slightly overrated. Of course, hitting in Yankee Stadium will probably be the best thing that happened to his declining statistics. CG is a good player, don't get me wrong. I just think people overrate him a little bit.

The Yankees gave up more for Granderson, than the Sox gave for Bay.

The Yankees' acquisition of Granderson has the Boston media even busier than usual. Rob Bradford of WEEI hears that the Tigers asked Boston for either Clay Buchholz or Jacoby Ellsbury in exchange for Granderson. The Boston Herald's Michael Silverman doesn't think the Red Sox will feel forced to strike back immediately, while Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that the Sox have no plans to replace their departed bullpen arms with pricey free agents. Speaking of pricey free agents though, John Tomase of the Boston Herald fully expects Boston to sign either Jason Bay or Matt Holliday.

Buster Onley reports the Red Sox have interest in Coco Crisp.

Given all the hitters and everything i just wish we would get Roy Halladay because pitching beats hitting any day so we would have the best rotation in the league and maybe even add Harden as the 5th starter.....Halladay, Beckett, Lester, Matsuzaka, Harden.......That would be sick

According to sources in the hotel lobby at the Indianpolis Marriott, the Red Sox continue to inquire with teams about their interest in third baseman Mike Lowell. The belief is that the Red Sox might be trying to position themselves to make a run at free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre.

FoxSports.com wrote Tuesday night that the Rangers were at least considering the prospect of acquiring Lowell to play first base and be a designated hitter, although he doesn’t appear to be at top of their list to fill the position. Lowell has played in just four games at first during his professional career, all coming during the 1999 season with Triple A Columbus.

Lowell did tell WEEI.com that he believed he could play first base, and would attempt it if the team asked. “I wouldn’t rule it out, absolutely not,” he said. “I’m a realist. If they think that makes us a better defensive team, that’s fine. I don’t have a major problem with that. I would have to work on it. I think Triple A was probably the last time I played first. I played for about three or four games. But that doesn’t mean I think I can’t do it. But I haven’t been asked.”

According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners are ruling out bringing back the 29-year-old Beltre — a Type A free agent who is represented by Scott Boras — back. If they were able to re-sign the third baseman, the belief is Seattle would play newly-acquired Chone Figgins at second base.

Mike Salk, who covered the Red Sox while in Boston, reports the Red Sox are shopping Mike Lowell to potentially make room for Adrian Beltre.

NDIANAPOLIS — Red Sox GM Theo Epstein met with the media to discuss what has been accomplished at the Winter Meetings in Indianapolis. He will be leaving tomorrow morning, shortly after the Rule 5 draft, and he doesn’t anticipate that any major moves will occur before departing. Presumably, that would include anything to do with either Jason Bay (whose agent, Joe Urbon, has not met with Epstein today) or Matt Holliday (whose agent, Scott Boras, has met with Epstein today, armed with books on the outfielder).

Indeed, Epstein said that one of the foremost accomplishments of the meetings to date has been the club’s ability to rule out and narrow down some of its options, and to eliminate potential free agents or trade targets from its shopping list. He did offer the following specifics, including:

–The club has one potential non-tender candidate for salary arbitration. Epstein declined to identify the individual, but in all likelihood, the candidate is first baseman Casey Kotchman, who made $2.25 million in 2009, and would be due a bump in salary arbitration, despite not having a starting role.

–The Sox have already achieved some improvement in its defense with the acquisition of Marco Scutaro, who is superior to the combined group that the Sox had at the position last year, but that it was certainly open to doing more. That said, he said that the team would likely have to choose between adding offense or defense at this point.

–Prospect Josh Reddick is likely to spend more time in Triple A to start the year, and that he would benefit from further development. Epstein described the 22-year-old as unlikely to ever have high walks totals, but that he makes consistent hard contact and plays good defense.

Highlights of his media session follow:

according to sources, the Red Sox are in trade talks with the Rangers in a deal that would send Mike Lowell to the Rangers. One source characterized the potential trade as “possible, but not close”. One name that could be potentially coming back from Texas is catcher Max Ramirez. Stay tuned …

Acquiring MaxRam could be an interesting move. He slugged .515 in the minors. My question is - how is his defense as a catcher or is he going to be moved to 1st base? He reminds me of Victor Martinez with his hitting ability, but His defense is also questionable. .515 slugging would be fairly impressive for a catcher but merely average for a 1st baseman.

Multiple industry sources tell John Tomase of the Boston Herald that the Red Sox have "significant" interest in free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre. Mike Lowell is the incumbent at third base, but the Red Sox are talking about moving him perhaps to the Rangers. Scott Boras, who represents Beltre, said today that some teams would consider moving their current third baseman for Beltre.

Beltre is a Type B free agent, so the team that signs him won't have to surrender a draft pick. The Mariners will obtain a supplementary rounder if Beltre leaves the Pacific Northwest.

The 30-year-old hasn't come close to matching the 48 homers he hit in 2004, but he still has 25-homer power and he's been a consistently strong defender, according to UZR/150.
