Gammons to leave ESPN

The man was never as good on TV as he was in print. He lost his fastball before he got sick, and never really recovered.

But what I will remember is the man's columns in the Globe in the 70's and 80's. Sometimes a whole page in the Sunday paper. Full of insight, and details. These days with blogs and the net, what he wrote would seem not so special. But back then in papers, you got such elemental reporting re strategy and deals, that his column towered over them. Other writers could conjure pictures in the mind better then him (if given 300 pages) - but - in a weekly format in newsprint? Unmatched in my experience. Edes learned every move he has at Gammons side, and has never matched never mind exceeded the master.

Good Luck Peter Gammons!

What a sad day for the game of Baseball.

Great day for Nesn. Now their is no reason to watch ESPN except when the games are on. MLB network is better for the Baseball fan and that is where the baseball people should be.

Do not know if it is sad or not, but looks like our gain...

Used to be amazed in his Sunday Columns in the globe.. how could he know that much???

ESPN continues to go the MTV route... i.e., irrelevancy.

How'd leaving ESPN turn out for Harold Reynolds? He rules MLB network now.
