This could have been posted or reported somewhere.

I heard he is on IR now (pretty sure thats correct)

If he is, was his injury really serious (ACL) or was this more of a personell decision made by the coaching staff as they came to the reality that he would never learn the offense in time to contribute and his value as a Returner wasnt worth a roster spot.

Any links to anthing covering this on the web or papers..

Thanks!

P.S - Keep your heads up , I think we will be just fine going forward. Fred Taylor is going to make a huge impact on our entire team when he comes back

No it was a legit injury- he definitely messed up his knee. As far how badly, I dunno, but must have been bad enough that it would have kept him out for at least a few game, and he probably just tore it again outright.

All I've seen is what Reiss said :

The mailbag was overflowing after the New England Patriots' disappointing effort against the New Orleans Saints. - ESPN Boston

"Steve, I have not been able to confirm the details of Tate's knee injury. What I hear is that he tore a ligament in his knee and that it is not the same knee he injured at North Carolina, but I have not been able to confirm either rumor."

If what he's said is true, it could be an ACL. But it could be an MCL and with the out time plus his being behind anyway they just put him on ice. So who knows.

BTW, before anyone claims he's done if he did tear his other ACL, remember Frank Gore tore both ACLs, a year apart, in college.

Hopefully this doesnt slow him down..

Such a promising prospect we could have really used him especially on kickoffs...not to downplay our lack of receiving options....

Smells like chad jackson (I know I know - not fair)

From today:

my best guess is that Tate is looking at a nine-month type situation, which puts him right around the start of training camp. From a team perspective, I think the smart approach is to plan as if Tate will not be there because an element of the unknown is always involved with some aspects of rehabilitation, and especially with a player who has a prior history with the injury.

Here's a more recent one from Forsberg which seems to contradict Reiss' first report (it being a different knee):

No returns from kickoff unit - Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

"Rookie Brandon Tate, who set the Atlantic Coast Conference record for kickoff returns over three seasons at the University of North Carolina, boasted a 26.5-yard average before aggravating the knee injury that had sidelined him at the start of the season. He is now on season-ending injured reserve."

Clearly Reiss thinks it's an ACL then. Which sucks and re-affirms my desire for another young WR in this year's draft but it was early enough that a return next year is reasonable and he'll more advanced with the playbook.

We took a risk using a top pick for an injured player who might not be ready for the 2009 season. We brought him to the 53 for a couple of games. He was re-injured. And now, we hope he will be ready for the 2010 camp. Belichick paid a heavy price for Tate. I think Belichick would be better off if he traded away ALL 3rd round picks. He hasn't done very well with them.

The 3rd round is shocking in it's bad picks and, now, bad luck. Tate and McKenzie are the latest victims.

Yup, add WR to the shopping list (pass rusher/OLB, RB, OG, ILB, C, TE,...)
