Fond memories of the Zeke Mowatt era

I was reading another thread when I saw a post by another PatsFans member who calls himself zeke mowatt. Whenever I hear that name, it reminds me of a funny.

We all remember the embarrassment that happened with Lisa Olson in the locker room. A week or two later, Dennis Miller commented on it on the "Weekend Update" segment on Saturday Night Live:

"Asked for comment, Patriots owner Victor Kiam stated, 'I don't see what the big deal is. I've seen Zeke Mowatt's penis, and I liked it so much I bought the company.'"

The team was easy to ignore then. Most people did. I remember the only Pats-related programming they had on local TV was this show with guys sitting around a tavern bar talking Patriots football with pained looks on their faces. You could buy tickets below face value from guys in the parking lots who were thrilled to unload 'em. Fans cheered when the defense made a tackle. Quite pathetic, indeed.

I was also in college during most of that era. Fortunately I had a boatload of homework that I usually procrastinated until Sundays to do, so I had something to keep my eyes averted from the train wreck on TV...assuming they were on TV as blackouts were common.

I remember deciding to head to Foxboro Sunday morning without tickets knowing they could easily be had. Oh the memories - No lines to get tickets, no lines to get a beer, no lines to use the bathroom and no line to get out in traffic.

I was living in Virginia during that time, and getting the Pats on TV was a once-in-a-year kind of deal. It was like the Super Bowl around the house...of course, it was more like Super Bowl XIX than XXXVI.

I've never seen it, but I've heard the '90 squad made the Top 10 Worst Teams of All Time on the NFL Network program. IIRC the Colts were also 1-15 that year, and each team's only win came against the other when they split the series. Blecch.

Seven or eight years ago I was looking around on eBay and found a copy of a book Kiam wrote called Live to Win, which shows him with a Pat Patriot helmet on the cover. I bought it, but I've never read it.

You should start a 'Words from Chairman Kiam' thread here and weekly or somesuch post a few hilarious excerpts. It would be one of the better threads, not that that's that hard.

I went to a game in '92 against the Colts. Hugh Millen was the quarterback. At the time (not sure if it's still the record) but it was the lowest attended non-strike game in NFL history. Good times indeed.

Pretty much the same deal here; I don't miss clinging to NBC for score updates, and the rare switched game...

It wouldn't surprise me if the Oilers broke it their first year in Tennessee when they played in Memphis. I think they averaged a little under 20K a game in a stadium that held 60K. (The people in Memphis were pyst that the team was only going to play there until their stadium in Nashville was completed.)

Anyway, every team has its share of fair-weathers (some more than others .) At least the Pats never had a stadium where half the crowd was wearing bags on their heads.
