Drew Brees did more on Monday night than embarrass the Patriots and establish the Saints as the team to beat in 2009.

He gave the greatest regular-season passing performance in modern NFL history, carving up the once-proud Patriots defense with the bloody efficiency of a Civil War sawbones in a battlefield hospital.

It all starts with the Cold, Hard Football Facts. And here’s Brees’ stat line from Monday night.

18 of 23 (78.3%), 371 yards, 16.13 YPA, 5 TD, 0 INT, 158.3 passer rating

Cold, Hard Football Facts.com: Brees: the best day ever

What an embarrassment for this defense. I really hope this helps them get some focus going forward.

If the 4th quarter bed crapping performance against the Colts did not "wake them up", don't know how this will. Hope it does, though.

Not sure how they could have lacked focus going into the game.

I look at this and say we just got our asses kicked. There an elite offense that are putting up similar numbers with the 2007 Patriots. There really good and are defense is average at best. I agree, if the 4th and 2 call in the Colts game didn't wake them up I don't see how this will either. The defense is the way it is.

Jesus. Only five incompletions throughout the entire game. But yeah, it sure isn't the personnel! That's all on the coordinators and the coaching!

Let's give credit where credit is due. Bress had one of those games that good QBs sometimes have. Sure, our defense got burned a couple of times, but he was also completing some passes where his receiver was well covered. There is no defense for a perfectly placed throw. It's one thing to do it in the regular season, it's another thing to do it in the playoffs. We as Patriot fans know too well how much pressure it is going to be for them in the playoffs. We also know the danger of peaking too early.

The talent on this defense is definitely good enough.
You don't go into the Saints game with the 2nd best points-against defense without good talent.

This is what makes Brees' performance even more remarkable.
Brees completely picked apart the defense, he had a phenomenal performance. He knew exactly where our weakness was every play, and was un-real with his accuracy all game.

I think a big reason why is that pre-snap Brees could clearly see if we were in zone, man, blitzing, or not blitzing. Our linebackers and corners all play off the line, so it's very easy to figure out what we are doing.

When is the last time you saw all Pats linebackers at the line of scrimmage, even if just to fake blitz?

Well, it's a LOT easier to make those throws when you have zero pressure in the pocket. This team NEEDS a pass-rush if they are to go deep in the playoffs.

Stunning it could ever happen to us, but it did. It is what it is. No way to gloss over it or put spin on it.

Let's see Brees have a game like this in the playoffs before annointing him.

This was also the first 5-TD game Belichick has ever given up to any QB.

It was an amazing performance, no other way to put it. The Pats D came into that game with the 2nd stingiest defense too.

Nobody is annointing him anything. He had a great game and shredded an outmanned defense. No sense in NOT recognizing that.

Brees put up a historically amazing performance. The D's scheme and/or talent got exposed, which in a way is the best thing that could have happened to the team.

The D wasn't undermanned, we were at full strength. Brees put up a historically amazing performance. The D's scheme and/or talent got exposed, which in a way is the best thing that could have happened to the team.

I didn't say undermanned. I said outmanned. Outmanned = The Saints offense was better than our defense and Brees took advantage of it. And are you really blaming that game on us using essentially the same scheme that we've used since the Super Bowl years? If you say that we are using a different scheme, I sure hope you have the statistical play-by-play evidence to back it up. The fact of the matter is that the Saints personnel on offense was better than our personnel on defense and it showed. If you can look at Brees' stats and tell me that's all on scheme, I'm going to die laughing.

The fact of the matter is that the Saints personnel on offense was better than our personnel on defense and it showed.

And yet you continue to have zero answers as to why even mediocre QB's look like Joe Montana under Dean Pees' defenses.

One major reason why they have success, and why Brees lit us up, is because there is no deception in our scheme. The QB and O-line have no problem identifying blitzers, and knowing if we are in man or zone, or what the safeties are doing.

Please name the last time all the LB's lined up at the line of scrimmage, even to fake blitz, to confuse the QB and O-line. It's been awhile.

hey guys, the defense is not championship caliber...yet. there is absolutely no leadership out there right now. Jerod Mayo is a leader in the making but he's only 23 or 24. Meriweather is also 24. Besides that, there is no leadership on defense. When a guy like Drew Brees torches you, the D needs to just calm down. That's what a leader is supposed to in times like these. This is why I started a thread a few weeks back asking why Junior Seau wasn't on the field in the 4th quarter against the colts. Yeah, he's old. But he's seen it all. I'm afraid Mayo will need some mentoring from someone.

Sure I do. I've said it a million times. Personnel. We aren't getting any push pure and simple. Consult this post for my reasoning behind our defensive woes this season: http://www.patsfans.com/new-england...ls-chance-thoughts-canada-eh.html#post1620444

This shows that you are not watching the games. I've seen us show blitz then back off in pretty much every single regular season game this season. You're relying on an appeal to ignorance here and it hasn't been working out for you for the past couple of days.

Monday night. Several times, as a matter of fact. Have you even been watching the games?

Now, since you have made it pretty clear that the schemes are different than in the 2001-2004 days, please feel free to provide game-by-game, or play-by-play statistical evidence that can back it up. Because we are using the same scheme that we have always used. The only difference is that we don't have the horses to execute it like we used to. I challenge you to present such evidence to me.

Brees did have a great game. However, a large part of this article gushes about how great the 16.1 YPA stat was. Take away the ridiculously blown coverage play (75 yards to a wide open Henderson) and the stats become 13.45 YPA and 296 total yards. The numbers are still very good, but not one of the best games of all time.

it was an amazing performance but I wouldn't put too much stock in the "formerly ranked second" defense. They beat up on some cupcakes but against the 2 best qbs in the league they were shredded. I don't imagine that they are still the 2nd stingiest and by year's end they won't be either.

Its not a very good defense and it is due to their not having very good players. Even Merriweather, who I thought had figured it out this year, looked like a rookie out there. Completely lost at times.
