Actually Dean, what they (and every other team we play) live for is dropping 8 people into coverage and still giving a 12 yard cushion.

Sounds like he is saying that the missed assignments were not new schemes the players did not know. Instead the calls were familiar to the players, but they did not execute them. If a player is not executing his assignment, then either the player has lost faith in the system and is deliberately doing something else, or he is not thinking about his or cannot remember his assignments. Either way is worrisome.

The 75 yard TD was on a blown assignment on a corner blitz. Not exactly passive but it won't give Pees total confidence in calling it again.

Yessir that was a bad blown assignment by Meriweather, no argument there. The fact that we continually rush 4 and drop 7 or rush 3 and drop 8 is just so frustrating. I hate Rex Ryan and I hate the Jets but I love the style of an aggressive defense that comes after you. We continue to drop 7 on 3rd and longs and continue having trouble getting off the field. This defense works against QB's like Henne and Sanchez who will make mistakes and beat themselves, but against good QB's like Manning and Brees, you get chewed.

Exactly, we never get up in the face of the WR's. Like on third and 5 Butler is playing 10 yards off and they do a quick 6 yard pass to get the first down. You could argue that the fact that we only rush 4 and keep 7 back in coverage with such a cushion is that we don't trust our CB's since they are young and inexperienced, etc, etc.

However, usually when you have a weaker secondary you bring more heat so the CB's don't have to cover the guys for that long. The fact that we continually rush 4 and basically just tie up the o-line instead of trying to penetrate, and play 10 yards off the WR's, results in us getting chewed consistently by good CB's. When BB was mic'd up for the Miami game he kept saying "Let's press these guys, let's get up on them." Yet the CB's continued to play off. I don't know if its a lack of self confidence or Pees' defensive philosophy, but I don't like it at all.

Wow, I haven't heard that before. Why doesn't he change this then? I do think we don't do it nearly as often as we used to, but I'm with you in that I'd love to see more blitzing, especially from the S and MLB positions. our OLB aren't getting it done, and the CB blitz last night was a complete disaster (though hopefully one that is coach-able, so we won't see it again )

Dean Pees made Kyle Boller, AJ Feeley, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Chad Pennington, Kyle Orton, and Mark Sanchez look like Hall of Famers. He made Hall of Famers Peyton and Brees look like the greatest qbs of all time

This guy has been "just getting by" with NFL defensive playcalling because the offense has been so darn good. Now that the offense is sputtering, the ineptitude of Pees is showing, and I'm glad people are finally starting to criticize this passive playcaller.


Has Pees ever confused an NFL qb besides Josh Johnson?

We definitely need to bring more pressure and create more chaos and confusion on defense. This gap control defense is ineffective in the modern day NFL. It's all about forcing the QB to throw the ball before he would like to. Just look at how Brady struggles when teams blitz him as opposed to teams that just keep dropping into coverage. Give a good QB a few seconds versus a 3 or 4 man rush, and he will pick you apart.

If you go on NFL.com and go to videos and search Bill Belichick you will see he was mic'd up for the Miami game. Basically this is a run down of what he says.

At 1:30 BB says "Alright next 3rd down, let's get up on em."

And at 2:29 BB says "Press these guys, press em."

Then at 2:41 BB says "Look we gotta get up on these receivers. We gotta get up on Bess." And he continues to say how they are giving up 5-7 yard catches and how they have to get up and get his ass.
