A little perspective

For all you Chicken Littles out there I want to point you to several facts of the last four years:

On December 1, 2005, Pittsburgh were 8-4 coming off back to back loss including a 26-7 loss to Indy.

On December 10, 2006, the Colts finished a streak losing 3 out of 4 games including a 44-10 loss to Jacksonville and went on to have statistically the worst run defense in NFL history.

On December 1, 2007, the Giants were 6-5 coming off a 41-17 loss to the Vikes.

On December 1, 2008, the Cards were 7-5 and coming off a 48-20 loss to the Eagles.

What do all these teams have in common other than not looking like strong Super Bowl contenders entering December? They all won the Super Bowl (except the Card who came close to winning the Super Bowl, but lost it in the final two minutes of the game) in the years listed eventhough all were expected to either not make the playoffs at all or be one and done once the playoffs started.

Now this doesn't mean the Pats will win the Super Bowl, but it definitely means that the people writing them off too prematurely. Barring a total collapse the Pats will win the AFC East. Once the Pats get into the playoffs, anything can happen.

Good post. I had been thinking about all of those situations.

Certainly the season's not over and there's time to regroup. My biggest concerns at this point are:

1. The Pats have no pass rush. That's a huge flaw which will be hard to overcome or disguise come playoff time.

2. The Pats still haven't played a 60 minute game, executed effectively in the red zone, or won a true road game this year.

3. The Pats have fallen flat in 4 of their biggest contests this season.

Those things don't bode well for us. But, as you say, there's no reason to panic at this stage.

The one big thing we have in our favor is that it's Brady back there, and you never rule him out. it's not like we have an one and out QB.

Who here wouldn't want another shot at the Colts? We should have beat them.

The only team we have reason to not feel confident against is the Saints, and we may not even have to see them if we do get to the bowl.

Nice try to get our hopes up Rob and another one is the fact that the NFC Champion Cardinals got crushed by nearly 40 points against the Patriots last december and was the last game they lost prior to the big game IIRC.

Really?!? The Cards had 22nd ranked pass defense last year. They were 14th in sacks. In 2007, the Giants were 17th in opposing QB's QB rating and 17th in points allowed. In 2006, Indy was 30th in sacks with 25.

I saw last night was a lost cause pretty early on, but in no way do I plan on bagging the rest of the season. No way are we anywhere near as bad as we looked last night. A little perspective is good for all of us.

Who would you like to replace him? No one is as good as BB, hes the best in the business.

3 out of the 5 took place on the field and BB has no control over those.

LOL! Only in New England would people call going to the AFC Championship game one year and the Super Bowl the next as failures. I can think about 28-29 other teams who wished they had such coaching failures on their teams.

Cardinals didn't win the SB so I don't know why you included them in your post. My post was specifically meant for Pitt, Indy, and NY.

As for your stats, coming into the game last night, our defense was ranked third. But that doesn't really paint the whole picture does it?

The teams the Colts were facing knew that Freeney was coming and got rid of the ball early. Just by Freeney's presence, the other teams' pass offense got disrupted. Now you can look at the sack totals, but you're not going to see the number of hurries Freeney and Mathis forced.

You're going to look at the 07 Giants based how effective their defense was based on that stat? Did you see any of their games from December on?
